Brief synopsis of Closer - BLU-RAY Version

Are humans meant to mate for life? What drives someone in a perfectly good relationship to cheat and risk losing the one that they love and that loves them? Is it possible to love more than one person at the same time? How well does anyone really know the one that they love? Directed by Mike Nichols (THE GRADUATE, BIRDCAGE, WORKING GIRL), CLOSER questions the nature of relationships and fidelity as it follows the tangled web created by Dan (Jude Law), Alice (Natalie Portman), Anna (Julia Roberts), and Larry (Clive Owen). Dan, a British writer of obituaries, and Alice, a young American stripper, meet in the film's opening scene when a London cab runs her down. Cut to a year later: Dan and Alice are now a couple, but he is suddenly smitten with Anna, a beautiful American photographer. In an ironic twist of fate, Anna meets Larry, a British doctor, and they are soon a couple, despite Dan's continuing obsession. But the entanglements don't end there, and ultimately, someone is sure to get hurt. The four players do justice to a script that is humorous, raw and disarmingly honest about adult relationships.

A bland boring film. Found caracters very unlikeable and uninteresting. The plot is only unpredictable in the sense you wouldn't have thought it could be so bad. The dialogue is mildly humourous at times, and as a Londoner was nice to see some familiar scenery. Big fans of Jude Law or admirers of Natalie Portman may find solace, otherwise, I would say avoid this.

Although the photography is not harshly low key, this still qualifies as a Film Noir, on account of the unrelenting bleakness of the plot and characters. That is not meant to be a complement, though. There is no-one to sympathise with, no-one to relate to, and the whole film is a self indulgent tantrum by an apparently self loathing production team. Shame on the stars that gave credibility to this waste of 104 minutes, by appearing.

I watched this movie with the view that 4 Moviestars could not possibly make a bad movie even worse. This was before I considered the Royal Tenenbaums (a horrid, horrid movie). Closer, with its barely connected storyline is akin to a rickety old train with loose carridges. The theme of this film is honesty, despite the main character's seeming inability to do so. Never before have I witnessed such a depressing and outright boring film. Avoid this like you would avoid tickling a crocodiles anus.

Quite a clever plot, quite a departure for Portman, especially the nude scenes, especially if you remember her in Leon! Worth the effort but wouldn't buy it.
