Brief synopsis of Next

Cris Johnson (Nicholas Cage) has a gift - the ability to see a few minutes into the future, an extra sensory talent that comes in handy for his job as a magician in a seedy Vegas Club. It also has it's uses at the blackjack tables when Cris needs a little extra cash. But his talent is no mere parlour trick and has not gone unnoticed by the authorities. And FBI counter-terror agent Callie Fellis (Julianne Moore) is eager to tap his brain to help thwart a terrorist group's planned attack on Los Angeles with a weapon of mass destruction.

Rated - 3 starsDaftly entertaining action flick...

PaulaWestwood from Ashton-Under-Lyne [Highly rated reviewer] , 07/05/2007

I think Nick Cage isn' t the only one to see in the future as this is one of those 'if I can't guess whats going to happen - I might as well give up' sort of movies. It has a deli counter full of cheese and is remarkably wooden in parts, but in a way that all adds a bit to its hook, and it makes it all a really quite entertaining movie. Its an action film rather than a thinker, but has some good little bits hidden in it. So if you don't expect too much and want to be entertained for 96 minutes it won't let you down. I enjoyed it and would say it is worth a recommendation.

Rated - 5 starsBrilliant!

Helen from Doncaster [Highly rated reviewer] , 10/05/2007

Not a fan of Nick Cage but traffic, got to the cinema late, missed the start of Spiderman 3, you get the idea, so ended up seeing Next. I am so glad I did, it was brilliant. The concept of the story is fantastic but translated well to film and the effects are really good. We were on the edge of our seats then there was a genuine jaw-drop moment, the sort that makes you want to yell 'No way!' at the screen. The whole cinema took a sharp intake of breath! Bloody marvelous, can't remember the last time I enjoyed a film so much. Going to Amazon now to buy the book.

Rated - 2 starsSilly, senseless ending!

A customer from North London , 28/04/2007

This is not Cage's best work.Supposedly, Cage's character Chris sees 2 minutes into his own future, with the exception of when he saw days beforehand the Jessica Biel character come into his life, which makes no sense seeing that he's a 2 minute man. FBI track him down to get him on board to save the world from mass destruction. Anyway, not going to give away the ending, as you'll need to see it for yourself, but as I was exiting the movie people looked confused and I heard a few saying ' Is that it?' another one said 'Did I blink and miss a whole scene, cause that ending makes no sense!'...anyway, that was pretty much what I was thinking. It's a shame as the movie certainly gets the viewer involved (despite Cage rather bizarre, flyaway hairdo!) but leaves the viewer senselessly hanging in the end.

Rated - 2 starsWorst Script Ever. And The Worst Wig.

XXX from Wolverhampton [Highly rated reviewer] , 02/12/2007

I used to think I could watch Nicholas Cage in anything. Then The Wicker Man was released.

So much for that theory.

He's still possibly the best leading man in Hollywood. Anyone who can carry a movie while wearing what can only be described as a Ken Dodd wig must know a trick or two.

'Next' feels like a hurried and rather blatant rip-off of Deja Vu. Both movies feature a central character who can see backwards/forwards in time. Both stories are nominally about our hero stopping a huge bomb from going off, but are really about our hero saving the life of one hot chick. But movies climax with big waterfront action sequences.

But Deja Vu, with Denzel Washington, is a much, much better film.

The problem with Next is that the script is truly wretched. Nothing makes sense. Nothing is explained or resolved. And the ending will leave you feeling cheated.

It has its moments. But not many of them.

Nicholas Cage really needs better material than this. And I don't just mean on his head.

Rated - 3 starsWhat? That's it? It's finished?!

A customer from Aberdeen , 21/08/2008

Is exactly what you will be saying to yourself at the end of this film. It's clever, it blends the 'flash forward' with the present to leave you with that 'OH did that just happen or is he just predicting it happening?!' feeling. Cage is alright in the film, his girl is alright too, as are the other characters. It's just a bit too alright though. Nothing really stands out (cliche Casino scenes after seeing the future and winning etc....) Read 'The Golden Man' by PK Dick if you like all the time warping shenanigans, the film was based on it.

Rated - 4 starsThorughly enjoyable

A customer from Birkenhead , 20/08/2008

Nicholas Cage is always excelant value for money and as usual contributes to really enjoyable watch. Similar in tone to national treasure with a few little twists and turns and and an edge to the main character that is undrestandable by the end of the film.
