Brief synopsis of The Hamiltons

The Hamiltons seem to be the picture-perfect American family. They are hardworking community members; giving to their local charities, attending town hall meetings and always respectful of their neighbors...except for the fact that they usually end up killing them.

The Hamiltons seems to be an attempt at a kitchen sink horror film , sort of like Ken Loach directing Blair Witch though it’s ends up more like Ken Barlow directing Blair Witch apart from the incestuous undertones which Ken would never condone.

The Hamilton’s are four siblings co-existing in a large house after the death of their parents. David ( Samuel Child) is the oldest and most sensible . We know this because he has a side parting and looks errantly bemused as if he can’t believe what he has gotten himself into , but that may be the actor ,not the character. The twins Wendell( Joseph McKelheer) and Darlene( Mackenzie Firgens) are decidedly more playful and irresponsible and cast knowing looks at each other that would get them thrown off Ask The Family .The film is mostly seen from the viewpoint of Francis( Cory Knauf) who is going through that angst ridden late teenage thing and seems to prefer viewing life through the video camera perma-welded to his eye.

You may wish he had directed the bloody thing after half an hour as The Butcher brothers direction seems to be desperately striving for the grainy low budget shock values of “ The Texas Chain Saw Massacre”. What follows is certainly low budget and indeed grainy and it is shocking , though not in the way they intended. There are abductions, killings and what is supposed to be a tantalising mystery about the identity of the thing they have locked up in the cellar , though any one with more than two brain cells communicating at the same time will suss that mystery out straight away. The final revelation as to the families true nature illicit,s a so what shrug though the final third is so sloppily directed you may get distracted by the continuity errors and pitiful acting and not notice it.

The frustrating thing is that the actual idea behind the film -written by the directors and Adam Weiss is a decent one but they lose it all amid a wallow of teen introspection and set pieces totally devoid of any tension or terror. If you really want to watch something terrifying with The Hamiltons I suggest you watch Louis Theroux meets The Hamiltons. Christine would have this lot on toast.
