Brief synopsis of Mysterious Island

Following a daring escape from a Confederate prison camp during the American Civil War, Captain Cyrus Smith (Kyle MacLachlan – Desperate Housewives, Twin Peaks) and his comrades are swept out to sea by a perilous storm and crash-land on a lost tropical isle full of dangerous secrets.

Salvation comes in the form of Captain Nemo (Patrick Stewart – X-Men, Star Trek The Next Generation), the troubled hero of Jules Verne’s ‘20,000 Leagues Under The Sea’ who has built a fortress on the island and claimed it as his scientific playground. When Nemo learns of Cyrus’ engineering background, he tries to enlist Cyrus in his ultimate project – the creation of a doomsday weapon that Nemo believes will end all war forever.

After Cyrus doubts Nemo and his weapon, the castaways are thrown out, left to fend for themselves against the wrath of Mother Nature. Will the escapees betray their ideals and ask Nemo for help, or will he unleash the power of his terrible weapon?

Rated - 1 starsMade for TV series.

I thought this was a film due to the other reviewer, but it turns out to be a two part 'Made For TV' mini series and a not very good one at that.

The acting is a bit wooden and the CGI is really appalling due to the actors not interacting with the monsters, giving the impression that they are standing in front of a blue screen and trying to hit the monsters, but the director not telling them where the monsters actually are. The story was okay, but unfortunately it was not true to the original story written by Jules Verne due to the inclusion of a couple of women, some giant insects, the absence of the dog and no dinosaurs.

In the book the characters are secretly helped by Nemo and do not meet him until nearly the end of the book and then they all escape the island in the Nautilus when the volcano erupts, whereas in this mini series they meet him straight away and are then hindered by Nemo to survive as best they can, only escaping in a rowing boat while Nemo finds himself trapped in a cave. It makes me wonder if the Producers had actually read the book!

At nearly three hours it was a bit long for me. The best I can say is that if you are a fan of 1940's B movies, you may find this humorous, but if you are looking for a thrilling adventure, look elsewhere.
