...but soon went downhill turning into your average Japanese martial arts cop & bad guy action flick. Thought it would have more substance to it but was a tad disappointed!

Rated - 4 starsGreat fun

Gritty, funny, beautiful and brutal. City of Violence is one of the best films I've watched in a while, purely because it is so enjoyable. The fight set pieces are mind blowing and brilliantly tongue in cheek, while the dark moments scattered here and there are deftly executed. It's slightly insubstantial as a whole, coming across more as a Greatest Hits, but when it's this much fun to watch then who's complaining?

Rated - 4 starsKorea's Get Carter

makgrey makgrey from Southampton [Highly rated reviewer] , 10/11/2007

This is Korea's 'Get Carter', a childhood friend is murdered and an old friend returns for the funeral determined to discover who is responsible. There's homage to action movies galore in this one, from a pinch of Tarantino to a fistful of Leone (and Morricone), plenty of Peckinpah, but all of it transposed into something undeniably Korean. I loved the teenage street gangs, with uniforms based on 'The Warriors' and 'Battle Royale' etc. The mixture of realism, gritty and the Michael Mann variety, with the out-and-out fantastic - Stephen Yeow style fight sequences - is what you must expect of most Asian movies, where cinema is still an entertainment. The acting is sound, the cinematography sweet, the soundtrack intriguing, and the story shifts through its gears at a lick. Sit back and enjoy.
