Brief synopsis of Catch And Release - BLU-RAY Version

Screenwriter Susannah Grant makes her directorial debut in this tale of love, loss, and finding new love. Gray Wheeler's (Jennifer Garner) wedding day is not going as planned. Instead of walking down the aisle in her wedding gown, she is at the funeral of her fiance, Grady, following his accidental death on a trip meant to be his bachelor party. To make ends meet, Gray puts her things in storage and moves in with Grady's roommates, levelheaded and attentive Dennis (Sam Jaeger) and quirky yet lovable Sam (Kevin Smith). With childhood friend Fritz (Timothy Olyphant) in from LA and crashing on the couch, its a full house. Inhabiting Grady's old room, Gray soon learns that her fiance had been keeping some big secrets from her and may not have been the man she thought he was. Perhaps more importantly, she discovers some surprising things about herself, and her ability to heal and love again. Each of the characters in this film has to find a way to survive the devastating loss of a man who held them all together. Garner effectively conveys Gray's heartbreak and confusion without going over the top. As Fritz, Olyphant pulls off the role of the mystery man who is always charming but often misunderstood. Jaeger is earnest and heartfelt as Gradys roommate and business partner. But Smith is the scene-stealer here, with deadpan delivery and great timing as a Celestial Seasonings employee spouting philosophical quotes from the herbal tea company's packaging. Juliette Lewis appears as a sexy, slightly flaky, Californian massage therapist who is also a skeleton in Grady's closet.

The real revelation here is the supporting cast, with top honours going to Kevin Smith....Smith shows the sort of flair for spot-on comic acting usually saved for his own films' screenplays

Ms. Garner and Mr. Olyphant could pass as younger siblings of Julia Roberts and Johnny Depp....[The film's] affection for its characters doesn't feel cynical

Rated - 4 starsNot bad for a chick flick

A enjoyable romantic comedy with some laugh out loud moments. The film starts off with a funeral inplace of a weding as the groom has just died on his stag night. The bride only later finds out her groom was unfaithful to her. But she gets a happy ending. Some really cool high definition natural panaramic views which make renting this on blu-ray worth while.

Rated - 1 starsA Lame Story Directed by the Tunnel-Vision Writer

PokerSpook from Huntingdon , 14/06/2008

The writer of this tale makes her debut as a director, bringing her own work to the screen. That’s a shame, since a second set of eyes might have found some good in the original screen play, and discovered a movie buried therein. As it is, with a bad story, badly made, two wrongs make an un-bearable. From what I saw, I think this was meant to be a “Chick-Flick”, and so my male opinion might not be totally relevant. However, I did persevere to the last reel. My wife walked out after 30 minutes, preferring to do the laundry. She hates laundry.

The on screen talent is ok. Garner is nice to look at, and does a fair job with an un-playable character. The mediocre dialogue of the supporting character “Sam”, was given such a lift by the comic delivery of Kevin Smith, that he gave the movie some small entertainment value. Smith, best known as Silent Bob, is someone I think has yet to show his full talent, and I look forward to seeing him in a big staring role.

If you like “Chick-Flicks”, this one will be a disappointment. I you don’t like them, avoid this film with vigour.

When you are hoping the film is almost over and you realise you aren't even half way thorugh, you know you are in trouble. The plot is incoherent and unfocused at best, just plain unbelievable at worst. I can only assume that the scriptwriter has tried her hand at directing to try and find something she is better at, unfortunately from seeing this film another career change would be advisable.

I like chick flicks, but this ones is a stinker.

Rated - 3 starsRent then Release forever

This film is all about relationships and tried to look at things after the main characters husband to be dies. He had a bit of a sleazy past which comes back to haunt him.The main characters best friends still do him an honour and hang around to cover it up, plus sponge off what he left behind. Overall this film is quiet shallow and superficial.
