Brief synopsis of Flags Of Our Fathers - HD DVD Version

Clint Eastwood's early-21st-century output has endeared him to Academy Awards voters, and he makes another bid for their attention with this tale of the flag-raising at Iwo Jima. Eastwood cuts back and forth between the battle that led to the flag being firmly planted in enemy soil, and the tour undertaken by three of the flag-planting Marines (played by Ryan Phillippe, Jesse Bradford, and Adam Beach) in the aftermath of World War II. The re-creation of Iwo Jima features impressive APOCALYPSE NOW-style battle scenes, the air full of thick plumes of smoke, zinging bullets, and pounding explosions. But the most interesting part of the movie comes as the three men are paraded in front of the American public, as they vacillate between embarrassment and anger at the public relations campaign they find themselves embroiled in, while also pleading with the public to help provide funds for the soldiers who are still at war.

Eastwood uses a script co-written by CRASH director Paul Haggis and a source book written by James Bradley, the son of John "Doc" Bradley (played by Phillippe in the film), to tell this affecting tale. Tom Stern, who worked with Eastwood on MILLION DOLLAR BABY, employs his skills as a cinematographer once again, deftly coupling vast panoramic battle scenes with darkly contemplative moments between the touring soldiers. Fascinatingly, the director's next jaunt behind the lens is to be LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA, which will provide the Japanese perspective on this famous event. It seems Eastwood will be keeping the Academy busy for quite some time.

I'd really been looking forward to viewing this film. I'm a big fan of all things Eastwood and was hoping that this would be a war film with a dirrerence. Sorry to say it didn't work for me. CGI was good and the re-creation of Iwa Jima was impressive but I just found it hard to get into the main characters. I think I needed a longer lead in regarding their backgrounds because once this bunch of young kids were kitted out in their uniforms I got totally lost as to who was who in the heat of the battle scenes. The flash backs helped as the three surviving flag raisers trouped around the US raising money for the war effort but then bang we were in the thick of the battle again and I was lost. Special features helped and I would advise watching these first before viewing the film.

Now we come to the HD question. I have a Toshiba HDDVD player and this coupled with a Panasonic PTAX100 projector gives me pretty good results and upscales my collection of ordinary DVDs well , in fact too well because to be honest when I spin an HDDVD disc the difference is not that great. I found this to be the case with Flags. So far the only HDDVD disc that has really knocked me off my seat was King Kong.

Just one last viewpoint on Flags. In the special features there's a section showing actual footage of the battle for Iwa Jima. I'm afraid these are the images I will take away with me. They are very powerful.

I will give Letters from Iwa JIma a spin. Having read reviews I think this may be the better of the two films

Felt I had to give my opinion after reading Keiths from Bath review.

Exactly the way I felt after the film. I could not get into the characters at all. Now maybe it was because there were no 'stars' or Eastwood did not develop them sufficiently I'm not sure.

I kept comparing it to Saving Private Ryan and I'm afraid this film just did not cut it. The effects were great and I disagree about the HD element, the transfer was good on my Panasonic PX600 and Toshiba XE1. Far superior to the upscaled SD version. TrueHD sound was grest too.

I now wish I had watched the extra material and may have taken more away with me. But I was just left with a feeling of was that it?

I was looking forward to this, but I admit to feeling that I'd missed something by the end of the feature. Interesting story, and the flashbacks were done well - I usually hate flashbacks as a vehicle for a story. A few 'modern war' twists, like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Friendly Fire, but otherwise a comment on the State's treatment of its heros for fundraising. The film doesn't really take sides on this issue - it's up to you to decide.

Good HD transfer (Tosh XE1) and really good sonics if you have a surround sound system.

Nothing about the film per se, but the HD picture is fantastic. Very nice. I listened to the True HD track (via EP35's analogue outs) and just a word of warning - it's very quiet compared to other True HDs like 300 or Batman Begins. I had to crank the amp right up and occasionally ride the remote as the battle scenes started relocating my house. (And yes, I have got the speaker levels calibrated).
