Jerry Maguire on DVD (1996)

Alot of people seem to hate this on principal; glossy Hollywood fare, starring the inimitable Mr Cruise, and already made famous for it's, 'Show Me The Money!', and, 'you had me at 'Hello'' scenes. Still, if you can put your cynicism on hold, you might just fall in love with this film, as I did. Cruise manages to play the eponymous lead with just the right mixture of smarm and charm, as a sporting agent who has a Road To Damascus moment and renounces the big money ethos held dear by his firm. Setting up shop on his own, having retained only one of his former clients, the film is a beautifully judged and perfectly played romantic comedy, as Jerry tries against the odds to get his business off the ground while becoming romantically entangled with his assistant, played by the charming Renee Zellwegger. Cuba Gooding Jr adds unexpected depth to his oscar-winning supporting turn as a loud-mouthed American Football star, and many of the film's funniest moments are down to his great interplay with Cruise's Jerry. Funny, touching, heart-warming, romantic, all without ever being TOO cheesy; I heartily recommend this.

This is a great film, with Cruise at his touching best! It is a film about self belief, belief in others, hard graft, success, morals, love and friendship! But it's not overly soppy and is one for the boys as well as the girls!

Cruise is at his best, Zellweger is fantastic and looks stunning and the little chap who plays her son is just amazing and any bloke that says that they do not melt like Cruise's character when he becomes friends with the boy, is a liar!

An all time classic - rent it NOW!

Ive never been a big fan of Tom Cruise, although to give him his dues he does pick some truely awesome films! From Coctail to the Last Samurai, his choice of popular director and contraversial/original topics has been the reason he has lasted (OK hes a fairly reasonable looking guy as well) Bbit that really sums ut in Jerry Maguire he has surpassed himself to the point where I cant imagine anyone else having the ability to play the role. The performance was just flat out exceptional, from the part where Maguire answers the phone pretending to be Cushman and Bob Sugar is on the other end, I actually thought his heart had imploded for real! But having said that, Cruise couldnt have carried the film so well if he didnt have one of the finest support actors I think around today, No not Rene Zelweigger, Cuba Gooding Jnr....... His over the top performance and sheer ability to control the scene while not being being the main focus contrasted well with Cruises. Bit girlie at times, but a truely great story that has abit of everything for everyone (Its appeal I guess) Another truely great performance I should mention is Todd Louiso as Chad the Nanny!! Excellent is all I can say!

This film is a must see for many reasons. Tom Cruise is annoying to start with as the character the film is titled after, but redeems himself fully. Cuba Gooding Jnr steals the show on many occasions and adds another incredibly entertaining dimension and some laughs. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, the romance aspect, which does takeover was also well played.
