Brief synopsis of Hell And High Water

Hired by a secret group of scientists and ex-military men, retired submarine commander Adam Jones (Widmark) takes to the helm again on a mission to investigate a possible communist nuclear base on an island in the Arctic. But danger lurks in the deep for Jones' crew, and the closer they get to their destination, the deeper their predicament gets. Hostile subs and tensions on board are only the beginning as Jones discovers that this mission isn't what it seems, and the real danger of atomic war comes from closer than he ever imagined.

Ignore the low scores here. For this superior Ice Station Zebra type of movie. Fuller's action movie, based around a Commie plot uncovered by no- nonsense Captain Widmark from aboard his privately charted submarine, may not be on the same inspired pulp level as Naked Kiss or Shock Corridor, let alone his great The Big Red One, but it is still excellent fun. Shot in colour and widescreen apparently at the behest of a studio who wanted to show the cinemascope process could be effective in such a setting, H&HW contains excellent special effects and some characteristic set pieces both off and on land. A colourful crew is aboard the sub besides the always great value for money Widmark which includes a prominent Cameron Mitchell, and overall its a great journey into action all the way. Recommended.
