Brief synopsis of Mass Effect

Mass Effect is a science-fiction action and role-playing game (RPG) created by BioWare, the commercially and critically acclaimed RPG developer of Jade Empire and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Mass Effect will deliver an immersive, story-driven gameplay experience with stunning visual fidelity. Published by Microsoft Game Studios, Mass Effect is an exclusive title for the Xbox 360 video game system.

As the first humans on the galactic stage, players must uncover the greatest threat to civilization. Their job is complicated by the fact that no one will believe the truth, but the world must be convinced of the grave threat at hand.

Players will travel across an expansive universe to piece the mystery together. As they discover and explore the uncharted edges of the galaxy, they come closer to an overwhelming truth - learning that the placid and serene universe they know is about to come to a violent end and that they may be the only people who can stop it!

Rated - 5 starsMass Effect - Knights of the Old Republic, Without the Star Wars

A customer from Wakefield , 19/12/2007

Mass Effect has been hyped for a long long time. Coming from the same stable as such classic RPG affairs as the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic series you would be forgiven for thinking Mass Effect would herald a new dawn for RPG gaming.

While it doesn't quite issue in a new era of RPG gaming, Mass Effect is still a deeply involving brilliant example of Biowares genius when it comes to producing games of this type. If you have played a Knights of the Old Republic game before then what you have here is basically the latest rendition of the genre minus the horribly expensive licensing costs associtated with Mr Lucas's univerise. Infact I can't help feeling Mass Effect exists because Bioware either could or wouldn't pay stump up for another Star Wars license.

The Mass Effect universe is made up from every cliche ever thought up in any SCIFI universe. Brooding hero orphaned at a young age ..... check, latent 'mystic' powers ... check ... cyborg like race of aliens from the edge of the galaxy ... check ... and so on. It's like Starwars, Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica all thrown into the magic plot mixer. The grand scope of the story is no worse for it, and while the backstory and game universe are mighty in scope you never feel lost since it's all so very familiar.

Graphically Mass Effect is a leap forward from the KotR games and the cut scense when viewed on a decent HD screen sometimes made me feel like I was watching a SCI movie.

The roleplaying elements of Mass Effect fall into three distinct parts, the usual character development which involves the usual mix of classes, skills and points to spend as levels are reached through combat and exploration. Item upgrades to weapons, armour and equipment and the choices in diagloue as the story progresses.

While the former two are pretty much the staple of any RPG game, the dialogue choices mark a leap forward in RPG gaming as much (if not more so) than the graphical improvments. You really feel that your choices make a difference (and they do effect the story as the game progresses).

The in-depth story telling and a game pace to match a good book or film will not make this the game for everyone. However if you have enjoyed Biowares RPGs of the past then Mass Effect easily marks the pinnacle of what they have achieved so far and is a must have game that will keep you entertained for a long time to come.

Rated - 5 starsBrilliant RPG.

A customer from Bristol , 27/11/2007

I think Mass Effect is an amazing RPG for anyone who likes RPGs, likes sci-fi or likes Shooters, becuase it has strong elements of all 3 of these in the game. I myself have been playing RPGs for a long time, but one of my friends who is a Gears of War junkie is now playing Mass Effect instead, as he loves the smooth gameplay style. my one criticism on the game is the autosave system, however, which is virtually nonexistant. this can get very annoying, for example today i was doing some casual assignments in a large galactic city (no fighting, no killing just basic non-combat objectives) when after about an hour i encounter a machine which with no warning at a time in which i could have saved, explodes, killing me and forcing me o lose my hour's work and start from where i had started that session. Despite the autosave system being quite annoying, it has still nonetheless remained in my Xbox since purchase, despite my friends bugging me for a game of gears or CoD.

Rated - 4 starsMass Effect- worth the wait

After an eternity in development the KOTOR guys come out with another belter. More action oriented than their previous RPGs you can either play this as a 3rd person shooter ( on easier settings ) or go for an all out stat ridden nerd-fest!!

Superb graphics, though a bit samey, the frame rate can suffer at times, but not enough to detract from the deeply engrossing plot.

Lots of replay value specially for all those Achievement junkies out there, and a huge amount of planets and systems to explore for the completist.

Well worth a rental but you may have it for a long time!!!!!

Rated - 5 starsTHE BEST RPG EVER

Ashman from Reading [Highly rated reviewer] , 31/12/2007

As i said in the title i think this is the best rpg ever made for xbox 360, but it is a little to short in my view however it has massive replay ability, i completed the game twice with 2 different profiles and then carried on with my first one after to get the rest of the achivements, also the planet exploring is fun and the physics are 100% right, the dialogue options are the best thing in this game, getting to choose what you say is one the best things that games need nowadays. There were few minor glitches experienced and the higher difficulty does make a big difference in game. A massive selection of weapons, armour and upgrades to collect throughout the game, and highly detailed character faces and enviroments and eniemies. This game deserves 10/10, only setback is that you can finsh the game in under 10 hours, that is if you are only following the main storyline, but if you wish to complete everything then at least 15+ hours.
