Rated - 4 starsGreat game for cricket fans

This is a great game for cricket fans with all players included and you can manage county teams as wells as international although the PSP version is much better, and it does get a bit boring after some time.

Rated - 3 starsGood idea, but ...

It's great that somebody finally got round to makeing a proper attempt at a cricket sim, but the problem lies in the word 'attempt'. Every time a new edition of this game is issued there are more features (usually just improved graphics) but the problem is that the basic game engine is flawed, always has been, and the producers have been in consistent denial about it ever since the first edition.

What WOULD have been a good idea would have been to look at the very best sports sims out there (which probably means some of the American Football ones) and adapt their techniques to cricket. This would in fact have been quite easy. For example, bowlers could be rated for speed, spin, consistency, accuracy, stamina, swing, etc and with all these variable changing according to conditions, form, tiredness, etc. These could then determine the various things that happen after the bowler lets go of the ball. The fact that they have consistently refused to issue a player editor utlity betrays the fact that this is not how it works. I strongly suspect that the broad outcome is determined by a fairly simple dice roll and then a standard bit of graphics footage is pulled out to illustrate it.

This would not matter if a broadly realistic result were obtained, but it isn't. Field placings seem to have no effect, good length balls outside off stump are pulled for four, etc, etc.

Thanks for the attempt, but this could have been so much better. Do not try this game if you are looking for a serious strategic simulation. It is the sports equivalent of a shoot em up.
