Brief synopsis of Vanilla Sky

Director Cameron Crowe (JERRY MAGUIRE, ALMOST FAMOUS) teams up with Tom Cruise once again in an adaptation of Alejandro Amenabar's 1997 Spanish film OPEN YOUR EYES. Cruise plays David Aames, a playboy publisher leading a seemingly charmed life. His most recent playmate is his "friend" Julie Gianni (Cameron Diaz), who cares for David more than he realizes. When David meets the fetching Sofia Serrano (Penelope Cruz) at his birthday party, he awakens to the possibility of what true love can feel like, leaving Julie distraught. However, after an accident that changes David's life, he is forced to rethink his choices. This psychological thriller becomes roller coaster ride of flashbacks as David tries to make sense of all that has happened, relaying some surreal experiences to a psychiatrist (Kurt Russell) after being charged with murder. The film's message may differ for each viewer, but it does make one bold point: every action has consequences.
Crowe gets exceptional performances from Cruise, Cruz, and Diaz and the alluring pop soundtrack features songs from REM, Radiohead, Bob Dylan, and Peter Gabriel. Amazingly, the scene of Cruise running through a completely empty Times Square was shot on location, a major feat in and of itself.

Rating of 2 stars out of 5 Radio Times

The textbook definition of a glossy Hollywood remake, writer/director Cameron's Crowe's disappointing take on Alejandro Amenábar's off-kilter Spanish thriller Open Your Eyes makes the fatal error of jettisoning the original's potent psychological suspense. Though this is a near scene-for-scene replication, Crowe has turned a disquieting and disorientating murder mystery into a superficial showcase for star Tom Cruise (whose character's facial disfigurement has been laughably toned down). Some pleasure is to be gleaned from the ever amusing Jason Lee as Cruise's best friend and Cameron Diaz's lively turn as Tom's unstable lover, but neither the star nor on-screen/off-screen girlfriend Penélope Cruz (reprising her role from the original) look at all comfortable, nor share any palpable chemistry. Though convoluted, Amenábar's riveting original pulled off its dream-like twists with shattering conviction; Crowe doesn't seem like he means a word of it.

Halliwell's Film Guide

A glossy remake of a superior Spanish thriller; the grittiness of the original has been given a high fashion makeover which, coupled with Cruise's self-regarding performance, fails to convince, even on the level of a bad dream.

Time Out

This is a very straight remake of Alejandro Amenábar's Spanish-language Abre los Ochos (Open Your Eyes). Admittedly,... Read more on www.timeout.com

I must admit to being pleasantly surprised by this film. I'm not a fan of any of the three main character actors, and so didn't think I'd enjoy the film, but I'm glad that I was proved wrong. David Aames (Cruise) is a man who you both enjoy and despair of in equal measure. His hedonistic life comes to a crashing halt when a casual fling goes tragically wrong. He is forced to live with the fact that not only did his friend die, but he also has to come to terms with major facial disfigurment, while at the same time trying to hold on to a love he has only just found, and keep his sanity - a battle he looks like losing. Watching his world fall apart around him was mesmerising. Discovering the option he took to survive his situation is the fascinating finale to the film. I won't give it away - I would seriously reccomend this film.

Wow, what an odd film. If you are planning on watching this film on the strength of the trailer (as we did) then beware... the trailer is very, VERY misleading.

I can't say that I enjoyed this film but I did watch it all the way to the end... I had to, I wanted to know what was going on.

Odd film. Odd. Odd. Odd.

Vanilla Sky is one of those films where the more you watch it the more you get from it. I wasn't gone on it the first time round but after further viewing (and shedding few tears every time) I love it - it is a film with lots of things going on, showing the extent to which a single moment can make a person view their whole world in a different manner but also how easy it is to slip and make mistakes that cost us so much. Look beyond the who the actors are and this is a fantastic film that holds much symbolism and suggestion.

Rated - 4 starsdreams and reality

in the midst of film, one wonders when the dream started and when reality ended but it becomes clearer. when u start thinking it becomes more confusing. the film is dark and interesting and the happenings could be the delusions of a man suffering headinjury. But an alternate explanation is given. Cameron Diaz suits the part perfectly. Penelope cruz is wooden and Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise, he doesnt play the part of an indulging rich brat.

watch it twice or watch it intently even the first time. its worth it.

I think it is one of the best films I have seen so far. Call me odd, call my strange - I don't care. The film is for people who love "being in the film" and who do know more about the power of the subconscious/unconscious. Great actors, great story, great movie!

Rated - 5 starsIts a bitter sweet symphony

kurian22 from Southampton , 23/04/2005

For me this film proved quite clearly that Cruise is more than just a Hollywood movie star. This guy can act. Forget the tacky Mission Impossible 2! He's so good in Vanilla Sky that I'd place him with other God's of Hollywood such as James Dean.

Its a very well shot film and its clear that the director has put a lot of thought into it. Cruise does take on what is essentially a very challenging and a rather dark role. To play a seriously disfigured guy who displays to the audience the bruising conflicts between the conscious and the subconscious is not something to be taken lightly.

What Cruise does effectively is to find a middle ground between being too cheesy or far too serious. If it went either way, this film wouldn't have worked.

A less high profile film industry might have made this film with a seriously sobre tone. However, Crowe and Cruise seems to have done well in producing a film that's both thought provoking and enjoyable enough to reduce its potential to become too depressing.
