A real find this one - having been recently re-released under the Jean-Paul Belmondo retrospective. It's a great signpost to the work of Claude Chabrol - at first looking like a Billy Wilder set in beautiful French countryside with a fitful Gallic cast, but quickly moving into the Truffautesque world of the New Wave. Watch the statute - and see how it acts as a centre-point as the action revolves around it, look at the wonderful staircase silhouette, the drifting dialogue that wafts out of shot and neatly sequences the action and the precise framing of each shot. Not quite the Hitchcock ending we might have hoped for - but enough here to provide a very welcome diversion of a glass of iced Chablis on these warm summer evenings - well recommended.
