Brief synopsis of Tommy Boy

After Tommy (Chris Farley) barely graduates from college, he returns home to the midwest where his father (Brian Dennehy), the owner of an auto parts factory, immediately employs his dumber than dumb son. While Tommy was away at school, his father had fallen in love with a beautiful woman (Bo Derek) and now desires to marry her. During the wedding ceremony, however, Tommy's dad tragically dies from a heart attack, which puts the company's -- and its 300 employees' -- future at stake. It is up to Tommy to use any available intelligence to keep his father's factory from going under. This road comedy uses the seriously comedic chemistry between the late Farley and his SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE buddy David Spade to brilliant effect.

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Chris Farley's tragic career closely mirrored that of John Belushi's: fame on Saturday Night Live, an aversion to healthy pursuits and a young death at the age of 33. But Farley never had the Blues Brothers or Animal House-style success of his more famous contemporary, and most of his films disappeared quickly from view. This is about the best of the bunch, a big, dumb comedy about Farley's attempts to save the family business from gold-digger Bo Derek. His Saturday Night Live partner David Spade is an ideal foil, there's a helping hand from Belushi's old chum Dan Aykroyd and Rob Lowe gets another chance to send himself up (à la Wayne's World). Subtle it ain't, but there are enough gross moments to raise a few belly laughs.

Halliwell's Film Guide

A farce that grows increasingly dim as two television comedians (from Saturday Night Live) flounder helplessly with a witless, cliché-ridden script.

Los Angeles Times

"...Rowdy, rambunctious, sweet-natured....Farley and Spade take off like rockets....TOMMY BOY is a good belly laugh of a movie..."

Rated - 4 starsLike 'Planes, Trains & Automobiles' - only funnier!

Similar to the John Candy / Steve Martin film 'Planes, Trains & Automobiles' this is about a nerdy straight man and a funny 'big' bloke on the road, who start off as enemies but end up as best friends - awwwww! It's much better than the aformentioned film, and it's a shame that Chris Farley is no longer with us - he's absolutely hilarious in this.

If you like your slap stick comedy, this is a must view. The story's a bit immature but sweet. And Spade and Farley together are just genius. Perfect to cheer you, mindless viewing pleasure.

Rated - 4 starsclassic Farley

A sweet, feelgood and harmless comedy. Tommy is a classic goofy but well meaning son of a carparts tycoon. He has to take over the family business on his father's demise and whereas he may be well laden with brawn he is lacking in brain. The ever obnoxious and camp-as-christmas David Spade does nothing for the film, but Chris Farley comes out with his speedballing, slapstick routine and carries the film through. A very aged Bo Derek plays the part of a money grabbing old floozy accompanied by Rob Lowe and add to the comedy.
