I don't usually write reviews but seeing the only other review of this film I wanted to redress the balance. This film may be sentimental but it is not banal. Although directed by Yimou Zhang it is not like the sumptuous House of Flying Daggers but more akin to Not One Less. The storyline is simple yet layered and portrays the Chinese character with great insight and understanding. That the main character is Japanese in such a warm storyline directed by one of China's great directors gives much hope for relations between the two countries and may well be intended as a metaphor. Some exquisite landscape photography too.

A banal overly sentimental movie about an estranged father and son relationship and how the father tries to win back some sort of relationship with his son. Time really drags while you watch this movie. It gives World Cinema a bad name.

Forget it and try Cave of the Yellow Dog or Spring Summer Autumn Winter Spring
