The Closet on DVD (2001)
RelatedCritics ReviewsAlmost a quarter century after he co-wrote La Cage aux Folles, writer/director Francis Veber has slightly altered his views on society's attitude to homosexuality — then he targeted bigotry, now it's the new political correctness in France. With its mix of high camp and mocking machismo, this is still a resolutely unreconstructed farce. But in structure, it's a classical comedy of errors, as Daniel Auteuil pretends to be gay in order to avoid redundancy from Jean Rochefort's condom company, and Thierry Lhermitte's mischievous executive dupes the boorish Gérard Depardieu into befriending him to save his own skin. Only such an accomplished cast could maintain this charade's credibility while continually skirting the edges of offensiveness, and it's good to see Veber on home soil, ten years after relocating to Hollywood. Total Film "...A bubbly confection with a sustained rumble of belly laughs....THE CLOSET is farce with genuine heat..." Movieline "...A healthy share of uproarious moments and a few poignant ones as well....Depardieu is hilarious..." Members ReviewsReviews Voted Most HelpfulMost Recent Reviews |
