Brief synopsis of Heavenly Sword

Emotionally charged, stunningly beautiful and delivering unprecedented dramatic character performance, Heavenly Sword showcases the power of Playstation 3. A dramatic tale of revenge sees Nariko, a fiery red-haired heroine embark on a quest for vengeance against an invading King and his army. The story builds around the ancient Heavenly Sword which once belonged to a powerful deity. It can never be wielded by a mortal without it draining their life-force, killing them within hours. When the invading King (played by Andy Serkis) destroys the warrior clan that guards the Heavenly Sword, the clan leader's daughter, Nariko, takes up the sword in a desperate fight for survival. Nariko must now pay the ultimate price as she embarks on one last mission of vengeance against the King and his army before her life is finally drawn to a close...

Very disappointing nothing but eye candy. If this is the type rubbish the PS3 puts out then no wonder the PS3 is struggling to sell. A game needs more than graphics to make it good. At least I have not wasted £30+ on less than 3 hours of gaming which it took to complete. Graphics 10/10 Gameplay 3/10 Replay Value 1/10 Story 4/10 satisfaction 1/10 Overall 2/10

The Playstation 3 is finally proving it's better than the rest with this stunning new game. The graphics are like nothing I have ever seen before - simply amazing. The storyline is great and was written by Hollywood scriptwriters! Gameplay is great and has three styles of attack: range, power and speed. It involves using a mixture of these attack styles to beat hundreds (yes, hundreds!) of enemys at a time. Sixaxis is also used in the game to control 'aftertouch' which involves steering thrown items (knives, axes, people and the highly powerful blast cannon) using the controller. Many people have compared it to God of War, which, despite being a great game, comes nothing near to Heavenly Sword. The soundtrack is also quite good.

This game is just gorgeous. There's no other way to describe it. A brief look around and you realize that unlike PS2 games, there's no fade-off in the distance, and the landscape stretches for miles - and it's actually all fully rendered on the PS3!

Beauty aside, this game has an engaging storyline, fantastic voice acting, and what I think are some of the most believable characters I have seen in games so far. The Character Models are so detailed you might find yourself spending hours just watching them do their thing, with occasional sighs of 'ooh' and 'aah'!

This game does have quite a lot of button mashing, and it can get slightly irritating at times, but this is compensated for by the truly awesome ‘after touch’ mode - where you can guide fired arrows, cannonballs, and all manner of thrown objects to a precise target. It takes some getting used to - but after an hour of playing Kai (a cat-like oddity, much like a female Gollum I thought... only sweet and not, you know, evil) I experienced something I have never so far had the patience to learn. I could aim! In fact I was suddenly a damn good sniper!

(On a side note, if you have this game, try shooting the bad guys in the bum or crotch - so funny to watch them hop around before they drop! Yes... I really am that evil.)

On the whole this game is, I feel, the closest we have come so far to playing the starring role in a movie. There’s barely any differentiation between cutscene graphics and gameplay, and forgetting the odd black screen, barely any waiting time. A joy to play, and a pleasure to own – but if you don’t see yourself button mashing for the next three months, at least rent this game and give it a try – you don’t want to miss out!
