Rated - 5 starsIn a Hitchcock styleee

I put this in my rental list after having seen the trailer; it seemed like a great concept. I was nearly put off by the reviews on this site, but glad I gave it a chance. Yes, the idea of a couple breaking down in the middle of nowhere is not new - but the execution was good. It was creepy, claustrophobic and realistic and unashamedly takes its cues from Hitchcock. Admittedly, it's not got all the gore of Hostel, Wrong Turn, Hills Have Eyes etc - but it kept me gripped!

Yes, no matter how they like to dress it up the plot is basically... car breaks down with good looking couple on board, cue creepy motel aka Pyscho, with an even more creepy manager, aka Pyscho. So do our dim witted couple decide to stay or move on?? Of course they stay for the night, who wouldnt? Mayhem follows in even more creepy masks and dark tunnels and although guns are available to shoot the bad guys they decide not to use them so to prolong the 'terror' for another 20 mins. Not bad really as horror films go although the ending was as weak as the England football squad. We were really hoping the good looking couple would die a bloody death, nevermind maybe that fate awaits them in a sequel.

Unsuspecting innocents caught in sadistic strangers' trap after taking a shortcut through a quiet small road.. where have you heard that before? Everywhere really. This show reeks with cliches and never actually reaches any climax. Even the ending was so abrupt, it was like they ran out of film! Poor Beckinsale, when will she choose a decent script?

This is a fairly simple film. Character development is kept simple and most of the gaps are filled in by our imagination. Wilson and Beckinsale do a good job of being likeable enough to actually care about despite the simplistic nature of the movie. All too often 'suspenseful thrillers' nowadays seem to miss out the suspense part by failing to create any kind of bond with the main characters. Who cares what happens to them? This movie does a good job of getting us on the side of the victims. I watched this with my wife and we both found ourselve coming out with suggestions for the characters. 'Go the other way', 'Watch the bathroom' etc.

There's nothing groundbreaking about this movie. The plot isn't particularily new or innovative but what it does deliver is done very well. We've all seen god knows how many 'sick psycho vs innocent passers by' films but where some others fall down with weak characters and overly cheesy dialogue this movie holds it's head up with pride.

Not a classic by any means but good fun and well worth a watch.
