Brief synopsis of Reaping, The - BLU-RAY Version

In this thriller from director Stephen Hopkins (LOST IN SPACE, UNDER SUSPICION), Oscar winner Hilary Swank is Katherine Winter, a college professor who refutes mysteries and so-called miracles with scientific evidence. When science teacher Doug Blackwell (David Morrisey) invites Katherine and her former teaching assistant/current colleague, Ben (Idris Elba), to his hometown of Haven, Louisiana, to investigate a river whose water has turned blood-red following the mysterious death of a local boy, the cynical professor is forced to find her own faith. The river of blood is just the first in a series of strange occurrences in Haven. It seems that each of the 10 plagues from Exodus is being manifested, in order. The citizens of this Bible Belt town are convinced that 12-year-old Loren McConnell (AnnaSophia Robb) is responsible for her brother’s death and for the strange events. Soon, Katherine finds herself questioning everything as memories from her past suddenly infiltrate the present in her search for the truth. The Deep South setting is both beautiful and creepy--particularly Doug’s classic antebellum mansion, and the swamps where the McConnell family lives. Swank is reliably solid as Katherine, a woman of faith who lost everything important to her and turned to science for answers. Young AnnaSophia Robb, a young actress to watch, has a captivating screen presence. Brits David Morrissey and Idris Elba (THE WIRE) round out the main characters, with Morrissey a convincing Southern gentleman and Elba a man who overcame his tough life on the streets to become a professor. Stephen Rea also appears as Father Costigan, a link to Katherine’s sad past.

First off, let me say this: David Morrissey, shame on you!!!

Secondly, why did no-one think to get a) a voice coach for David Morrissey?

b) a good screenplay?

Bad things include the fact that the plot makes no sense, and not even in an entertaining way, I mean, who can take a concept as juicy as the 10 plagues and cock it up?

Oh, and not like anyone cares, but Hilary Swank, you have TWO OSCARS. What is wrong with you??

This film is so bad, that the extras on the blu-ray edition have as their highlight, a 10-year old precocious actress, narrating a dramatisation of her high school creative writing project. They must have had money left over from a wasted sfx budget and forgetting to hire a voice coach for the Morrissey.

A very enterning film yet again with a very good story line, my wife and i had seen some of this film before but must have only watched some and for some reason not all, but even though we knew how it ended we still enjoyed watching it and would recomend it to others, it had action a bit of mystery and horror and even touched on a bit of the bibical side of things.

Rated - 4 starsSupernatural Thriller

I like these supernatural thrillers that make you think. I also like it when I realise who dunnit just in time, but that means that although it is a good thriller I'll need to leave it some time before watching again so I can forget and enjoy the colour and effects again.

It looks like there could be a Reaping 2. Lets hope they have some good writers to make an even better movie. This could be the new Omen type series.

While the story keeps you guessing all the way through the twists at the end keep you enterained and while the best of the effects are saved for later in the film they are indeed impressive especially in the blu-ray. Although considering the two time academy award winning director this could have been pulled off in a much better way. However in my opinon one of the main redeeming factors of this film is Annasophia Robb's portrayal of the mysteriously silent girl (Who's identity you will not find out until the end) and effectively portrays the girl with practically just her eyes even when she goes all Terminator with the locusts on the townspeople (with her naturally large green eyes i thought she pulled that off brilliantly) in fact this entire film in my opinion was just (if i were looking back on it in years to come) just our two leading female (as it turns out) protagonists and our single (as it turns out) antagonist.

It is because of this odd imbalance and plot twists that makes this film stand out in my mind when (in similar to the first Terminator film) it's the upcomnig Robb that, despite her lack of lines, seems to steal the show in my opinion. I do think this is what they were getting at when they starved her character of lines right up until the pivotal moment and why i see this film as probably one of my favourites of recent times

Rated - 2 starsDisappointing but a nice demo of Blu-Ray

primate2008 from Wilmslow [Highly rated reviewer] , 29/02/2008

Well I normally expect quite a lot of Hilary Swank these days but why she got involved with this is anyone's guess.

The film starts OK, there is a reasonable amount of suspense and a few shocks but past the half way mark it tails off into complete drivel. The characters are awful and predictable and the final set piece is literally laughable.

That being said, the Blu-Ray experience itself is pretty good, there are lots of atmospheric sound effects and the colour reproduction and image quality is excellent.
