Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

In this third entry in the series inspired by the novels of Richard Gordon, Dirk Bogarde, as accident-prone houseman Simon Sparrow, once again escapes the confines of St Swithin's in order to explore pastures new, in this case a country practice where virtually nothing goes right. But it's only once he's back under the beady gaze of James Robertson-Justice that the film comes to life, although even then the romantic interludes with Muriel Pavlow slow down the proceedings. It's amiable enough, but everyone is just a touch off colour, and the film shows signs of the terminal decline that would set in after Bogarde quit the series.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Hit-or-miss medical comedy with honours about even.

The third in the doctor series films from the Betty Box/Ralph Thomas/Pinewood stables. The usual characters are here: Dirt Bogarde as Dr Simon Sparrow and James Robertson Justice playing himself (aka Sir Lancelot Spratt) Spurned by St. Swithin's Hospital in his efforts to become a surgeon, the young, newly qualified Dr. Simon Sparrow hits the streets in search of a medical practice. His job hunt prompts him to leave London for a stint as a country doctor until his employer's love-starved wife plagues him with unwanted attention. He's soon back in the capital working on Harley Street treating the fashionably rich and fending off further romantic entanglements. The first two films in the series were the strongest: In the House (1954), At Sea (1955).

I enjoyed this film. It was great to see Dr Simon Sparrow and Lancelot Spratt up to their usual capers. Simon Sparrow gets to do a lot of different doctor jobs and meets some interesting patients along the way. However his real dream is to become a surgeon at St Swithins and it is interesting to see how he realises this dream. If you like Ealing Comedies then you will enjoy this.
