Brief synopsis of The Day After

Steve Guttenberg and Jason Robards star in this Emmy Award winning made-for-TV movie about the aftermath of a total global thermonuclear war. Taking place in Lawrence, Kansas, THE DAY AFTER is a bleak look at the effects such a war would have on humanity by using the inhabitants of this small town as a microcosm of the world. Decidedly grim, Nicholas Meyer's film is graphic and disturbing, one that polarized an entire generation's attitude towards nuclear war.

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

The effect of nuclear war and its aftermath on several Kansas families makes for a mild diversion in this lavish television movie directed by Nicholas Meyer. The impact of the twin explosions, subsequent radiation poisoning, looting and firing squads moving in to assess the damage, is lessened due to network-imposed soft-pedalling of the true horrors. But the keen eye kept on the more personally-felt traumas of the grim situation gives a better than average focus as the apocalypse victims try to rebuild society. The A-list cast, including Steve Guttenberg, John Lithgow and Jason Robards, rise to the often heavy-handed occasion.

Watch this by all means, but for those who reviewed & suggested it was scary - try Threads for realism. The Day After lacks the grittiness of Threads & does very little to make you believe the true reality & result of a nuclear war.

Rated - 2 starsSeems outdated but compulsory viewing

I watched this initially on the sci-fi channel which seems to regularly show it mid-afternoon Sundays and was instantly hooked.

Fair enough the actings a bit ropy and i'm pretty sure in real life everyone dies after a large scale nuclear strike shown but you can't fail to be impressed by the story and attention to detail.

It brilliantly shows the aftermath of a nuclear war where everyone becomes selfish only looking out for themselves - survival being the name of the game.

Not as good as "Threads" which I cannot find anywhere but definitely worth watching nonetheless.

Rated - 5 starsA Slap In The Face Wake Up Call.

A Slap In The Face Wake Up Call. to governments of the world to find an alternative method to the non winner & non sensical hype of a nuclear war in which there can be no winners & apologies count for nothing. This movie is definately a true image of man cutting off his nose to spite his face. In the 80s, we really did come close to using them. Now the weapons have been made, the major task is to make sure some third world nut dont get hold of one in the name of martyrdom.

If you're looking for a realistic account of the aftermath of a nuclear attack, then you'd be advised to rent out the UK-based 'Threads' or 'The War Game' as this effort from the USA just doesn't cut it.
