Brief synopsis of Peaceful Warrior

Based on his series of philosophical books, this is the story of Dan Millman (Scott Melchowiz), an arrogant college gymnast who finds a guru in the form of a mysterious gas station attendant called Socrates (Nick Nolte). Poised to qualify for the Olympics, Dan is nonetheless troubled and Socrates seems to have the answers.

Rated - 5 starsIt's a good film...

OK so you're never going to get a film anywhere near as good as the book in this case, I've read the book and is No.1 on my booklist (of about 2!!).

The film is actually satisfying in that it seems to have been given the Hollywood gloss yet has retained the anchor of a spiritual context. There are some parts of the film that made me giggle where Socrates responds to Dan's constant questioning, and other times that make me smile inside (with the wisdom being imparted).

I didn't think that Nick Nolte would suit the role of Socrates (not the image I had in my minds eye), but he doesn't manage to spoil it which is important - so well done Nick!

The film is farily slow but still keeps your attention throughout.

So, why the 5 stars? Well I think they should make more films like this with the powerful medium of movie making that they have. Highly Recommended!!

If you were disappointed with Celestine Prophecy or Conversations with God, Peaceful Warrior comes to the rescue

Rated - 4 starsAs good as the book...when you get into it

A customer from North Wales , 01/05/2008

At first my thoughts were that this was rubbish compared to the book. I was gutted as I had waited so long for this to come out. Give it some time though and although there are bits missing (compared with the book), the film is great!!

Rated - 3 starsA semi skimmed version of the book

Mike Hume from York, England , 18/05/2008

If, like me, you have read and enjoyed the book (several times in my case), you may find this disappointing. I found the book compelling and inspiring; mystical and spiritual. The film is a story of triumph over adversity set within the context of a sports movie.

For me, there are too many deviations from the original story. Both are supposedly based on true events. With the film I am left wondering if Socrates actually existed, or was simply a construct to hang a story on.
