Brief synopsis of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008

Key to PES 2008 is a proprietary adaptive AI system entitled Teamvision - an advanced AI programming that learns and adapts according to an individual's style of play. Teamvision will build attacks and counter specific movements such as previous attacks or defensive errors, ensuring games are more in line with the real thing. Set-pieces have been improved with the addition of a number of new options, including full control over the number of players and the position of the defensive wall.

With the Pro Evolution Soccer series renowned for its fluid, realistic gameplay, PES 2008 builds on the implementation of Teamvision with additional key advances The new AI ensures that defenders work to close down space and block efforts on goal, with shot timing still left entirely down to the player. Close control has also been enhanced when dribbling the ball, and a number of subtle moves added to bypass defenders and move the ball into space.

Player detail has been taken to incredible levels in the Next-Gen versions with full facial animation and the high-definition detail afforded by the hardware used to show full movement and subtle details.

Rated - 2 starsSlow framerate ruins the game

On the PS3 this game is incredibly jerky and that's due to the slow framerate. I've been a fan of the Konami football games since the first International Superstar Soccer.. this is the very first in the series that has genuinely disappointed me.

Pro Evolution Soccer was well known for it's smooth gameplay, do not expect that for PES 2008.

Rated - 3 starsbetter on 360

I bought this on the 360 before renting it on the ps3.

The frame rate is bad on the ps3.

The 360 version is much better.

Although online the 360 has some serious lag problems.

Maybe it's FIFA08 this year?

Rated - 5 starsExceptional game play - as always

A customer from London, England , 02/11/2007

Having eagerly awaited for the release of FIFA and PES 2008, PES 2008 lived up to its superb reputation around game play, and is just as fluid and fast flowing as before, if not more so. FIFA is still a little too slow in that respect, and the game feels 'unnatural' and seems to respond too late to the human user's quick thought process. Still a decent game until you play PES 2008, after which convincing yourself of the FIFA experience being better becomes impossible.

Rated - 2 starsAnnoyingly Disappointing

calvins48 [Highly rated reviewer] , 14/11/2007

PES 2008 is turns out to be disappointing. It doesn't deliver on what it easily could and the game could have so much more depth

First off, the graphics. They don't feel very next-gen at all. Compared to FIFA 08, the graphics in PES 2008 look more like beefed up PS2 graphics than true PS3 or Xbox 360 next-gen flair.

The players move as well as usual but take a while to complete commands that you assign. For instance, if you're near the goal and you are sprinting and you shoot, the player will take one or two more strides before he actually shoots; resulting in some frustrating situations.

The atmosphere is great. Stadiums feel real and you can really hear the crowd chanting. This is something that prevails over FIFA 08's measly crowds. Although, FIFA 08 again wins on commentray. PES' new commentators sound better than last-gen but still end up repeating the same comments too often, you really start to notice this after a few matches.

Master League is as good as always, with the player being able to start as a professional club, a created club from the ground-up, or a pre-created but amatuer club. Creating a club is fun and is generally the thing to do in the Master League mode. There are tons and tons of customization options, and creating never gets boring because of the simple menus and multiple variations that can be applied to all areas of your team. The professional clubs still have little licenses (FIFA 08 kicks PES' butt here) and this gets annoying if you really want to re-create some real-life games you've just watched on the TV.

Online is good, but only being able to play single games (compared to FIFA's multiple online options) is a darw back here.

Overall, PES 2008 provides a great gameplay experience if you're a heavy fan of the series. On the other hand, new comers won't enjoy it and should definitely play some of the last-gen games to get a better PES experience. It seems like a step back for the series, letting FIFA catch up a little bit.

What a complete let down. I was really looking forward to this game and now it's here what a dissapointment. Game is jerky and blocky, after experiencing the many delays in release date you would of expected it to be at least Good but NO after only 1 hour of of play I packed this game in it's envelope and made a quick exit to the nearest post office to return it.

Online play is non existant due to the game requiring a registration code and even if the online play made the game better we will never know unless we buy it. Looking at the overall gameplay and appearance of the game, I aint wasting my money.

Stay away unless you want to be let down....
