Played this game round a relatives house in the US. The first thing that hit's you when you fire up Eternal Sonata is the rich, vibrant graphics that look like overexaggerated manga which isn't a bad thing. The other is the intricate storyline which is based on classical music. The story is based around the dreams of a musical composer Chopin, and the interesting characters and environments within what i would call a wonderfully designed Japanese Role-Playing Game. This game is not for those who don't like turn-based or Japanese games, since the game uses both these mechanics. However, almost everyone will love the rich presentation, and it should be appreciated the amount of effort the developers put into the game. The combat system is brilliant with lots of great animations and sounds, creating a visual treat for the eyes and ears. The only drawback from this being a 5 Star video game, is that there are too many unnecessary dead ends. The player will find themselves reaching a dead end with no hint of it. The game by RPG standards is pretty linear meaning there is'nt much leeway for exploration compared to heavyweights like Final Fantasy and Blue Dragon. Hope this review helped.

Rated - 5 starsA wonderful RPG

Eternal Sonata is nothing short of breathtaking. Graphically the game blows away the competition (currently that's Blue Dragon); sound is as you can imagine simply beautiful. This game is a true RPG in that you really care for the characters you encounter and end up wishing time would stop so you don't have to go to work and stop playing.

The battle system is very enjoyable, where the abilities you have available depend on whether you are stood in dark (including shadows) or light. Now that sounds simple on paper, but bear in mind even the shadow of your team mates and that of monsters will change your abilities to dark (this can be used to your advantage!). Another change from run of the mill RPG's is that there is no mana system for spells, you can use them as often as you want, which for me is a great thing (I hate spending all my money on mana replenishing items). The battle system does not play anything like the final fantasy or blue dragon games. It is closest to games like tales of eternia, where you fight in real time, then your opponent fights in real time.

The story line is very very good, and you really don't know until the very end if its going to be possible to save the world. This and the wonderful historical tale of this great composers life keep you hooked and not once are you tempted to skip the story cut scenes.

If you have been waiting for a great engrossing story driven game, give Eternal Sonata a try, you really will not be disappointed.

Unusual storyline and cute graphics make up for poor gameplay with this title. Worth a few goes but not a classic.
