Brief synopsis of Warriors Orochi

Koei has finally gone and done it. For the first time two of its mammoth franchises Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors have come together in Warriors Orochi for a game that's suitably epic in scope.

Without any kind of warning, the evil Serpent King Orochi has descended from the skies. Not only is he unannounced, he's shattered time and space. Damned inconsiderate, really. He's gone and kidnapped the strongest, wisest and most courageous warriors from Ancient China and Feudal Japan to test his might against. Fortunately, in amongst the kidnapped are the heroes of Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors to sort things out.

The game boasts an impressive roster of some 77 playable characters from both series. It's the hack-'n-slash gameplay you've come to expect, but for the first time in one of Koei's tactical action games players can create their own three man tag team. Characters are all categorised according to their strengths (Power, Speed and Technique), so players will be able to mix and match to find the ultimate offensive combo, with Weapon Fusion allowing them to combine the attributes from different weapons for even greater effect.

There are two modes to play with. Story Mode is the core campaign, with players taking on the perspective of four factions: Shu, Wei, Wu and the Samurai Warriors. Once you've played through that, Free Mode will allow you to play through again with all the characters you've unlocked. Each faction sports eight regular missions and seven side missions, so when you throw in the hordes of enemies you have to fight, Warriors Orochi should give you plenty to go at.

Warriors Orochi needs to appreciated in a chronological sense. It serves as a filler between Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors.

With the exciting news that Dynasty Warriors 6 will be coming to the 360 next year, Warriors Orochi will keep fans amused until the real battle begins in 2008.

What you get is an all-out remix title, that features 77 different warriors in total, that's ALL of the warriors from both Samurai and Dynasty titles, plus a couple of new ones, coming together with the most ridiculous excuse for a story since a Ninja Turtles game!

But who cares about story, while there's slashing to be done?!

Anyone familiar with the Warriors series will know what to expect, and if this is what you love, will not be disappointed. This title does feature thousands of enemies on each stage, and the same characters that you know and love/loathe, just waiting to be chopped up.

The gameplay remains the same, which will be approved of by fans, but will not inspire doubters. Hack, hack, slash and a mighty chop to finish - and repeat... And while combos can be stringed for a satisfying length of time, that as usual is all there is to do.

This time however, you take 3 distinct Warriors to the battlefield, where the only strategy involved is the slight differences in the classes they represent (speed, technique, power), and that they can heal up when not being used (helpful).

Weapon upgrading is by far the most entertaining new addition, as the upgrades that features in previous titles as held items, can now be fused into your weapon of choice in one of 10 slots up to a power of 10 each, giving you an enormous range of possible combinations, such as whether to plump for the devastating ice effect, or leave it out instead focussing on greater weapon range. As with DW 5, there are 4 base weapon strengths, but the combinations of fusions available make this a very addictive new feature.

Pairing Samurai and Dynasty Warriors together works nicely and quite amusingly, although the story really is laughable, serving little more than an excuse for an all-out battle royale!

There is none of the strategy of the Empires branch of the Warriors series. All you get is 4 campaigns to play with, which even as a basic play through, will consume about 20-25 hours of your time.

If you carefully select and balance which Warriors you level up, and how you fuse their selected weapons, whilst gaining new attributes by fulfilling specific conditions on each stage (optional - get 180 KOs within first 8 minutes of battle), there is a lot of gameplay here, as fans of the Warriors series will know. Other sites have labelled this a Dynasty Warriors Lite, but it really is not the case. The 4th weapons are HARD to get, each character has a unique item, and there are lots of attributes to individually unlock, and despite the overwhelmingly simplistic and similar nature of the gameplay - characters do behave differently in combat, and you will have fun developing a killer team.

Fans will know what to expect, and will get it, but without the historical story mode. Newcomers will get an instant-action taste of what the series has become famous for. Non-believers will not be converted.

Take it as you find it!

If you were/are a Samurai/Dynasty Warriors fan like me, you will enjoy this game. Really long enjoyable and just hack and slash your way to victory. With all the characters from previous games stuck in one it's worth it.

If you just want to get some anger and stress out this game is also for you. But if you are not a fan of Hack and Slash I do not recommend.

This lacks the stratergy or even small amount of depth of the Samurai warriors game which made the lifetime of the game increase, it does however have missions where accomplishing certain goals gives that level a richer feel. I don't really see the point of this game, it does not improve on anything from the previous games, if your a fan of the set I can only see you getting this for collectors sake.
