Brief synopsis of One Missed Call

Kou Shibasaki stars as Yumi Nakamura, a teenager who gets freaked out when her best friend, Yoko (Anna Nagata), gets a call on her cell phone--from herself, screaming, dated three days in the future. Three days later, at the exact time of the call--which had an ominous, strange ring tone--it all comes true, with Yoko screaming as she dies. The calls continue as Yumi's friends fear that they will be next to hear the ring tone that foretells death. Meanwhile, Yumi is joined by Hiroshi (Shin'ichi Tsutsumi), whose sister was recently killed and who wants to get to the bottom of the mystery before more young women die.

Rated - 1 starsAnother one?!

Another remake of a japanese horror, unfortunately it follows the previous ones and falls way short of the mark! Just generally not good, tho some parts are funny, keep an eye out for the mobile exorcism tho!

Rated - 4 starsThe other reviewer must be confused

As you can see this isn't available to rent yet, and aside from that it's actually japanese, directed by the legendary tikashi miike. So not exactly a remake of japanese horror, but actually a japanese horror.

I anticipate this movie being gorey and bizarre like many of miike's movies.

Rated - 3 starsRing - but with mobile phones.

A customer from Yelverton , 06/04/2008

Can I firstly clarify that this is the Japanese original, not the new remake.

Whilst not a bad film, it's easy to draw so many parallels to 'Ring'. For that reason, one could say it's a fairly formulaic Japanese horror:

Paranoid, screaming schoolgirls? Check!

Unpleasant methods of death? Check!

Scary woman with long, dark hair? Check!

This makes it sound like I'm doing it a disservice - I'm not. It's just that after seeing 'Ring', you'll notice the similarities. Regardless of this, it's still an interesting watch that stands head and shoulders above so many other western 'horrors' and is definitely worth a watch. Anyway, I'd watch this one before you make the newer remake, as previous form has always shown the Japanese originals to be far better. (Ring, The Grudge, anyone...?)

Rated - 1 starsYet another Ring rip-off

A customer from Norwich , 25/08/2008

If you've never seen any Asian horror films before, the three that I suggest you check out are The Ring,The Grudge, and The Eye.They are all top quality films that will turn your hair white with fear. But as for the rest, they are just poor imitations or rip-offs of the afforementioned and really not worth the bother.

One Missed Call? Do yourself a favour and miss the whole tedious film.

Rated - 3 starsone missed call

A lot of reviewers have dissed this film but I am going to stand up for it. I advise you all to watch this film with subtitles - its always best to see the film in the original language because you can watch it again dubbed and get annoyed at the stupid voice overs. So watch the picture in the language of the actors and be submerged into the merky thrill of the film, (remember to switch your own phone off when watching though!!)..... I know its a little old fashioned in its scary scenes but its great every now and then to be reminded that we dont always need special technical effects to give us a fright. So dont be put off have a go and give yourself a night of dare with friends to see who is the first to switch their phones back on afterwards......
