I was looking forward to this movie - however the distributors have decided to mess about with the bluray process and as a result I couldn't play it in my machine. I use my PC with PowerDVD ultra for blurays so if you have a similar setup you might want to hold off until PowerDVD release an update for their software. Version 3730 will not play it but apparently they are working on a fix.

Update. PowerDVD 8 still doesn't play this movie. I get the feeling that Cyberlink aren't going to bother making this movie work. So far this is the only bluray I have had an issue with.

Rated - 3 starsCouldn't play it in my Sony BDPS300

A customer from Portadown , 07/02/2008

My machine is a US Region A.

This disc is one of the approx 30% of European Blu Rays that's coded only to play on Eurpean Players.

This coding is a complete nuisance and ruins the experience and wastes money consumers part with for the Blu Ray Hardware and Software.

Someone soon enough though will be offering Remote Hacks or Coding Removal in your machine's memory using Software on a disc or the like. BRING IT ON!!

HD DVD thank you for NO REGION CODING!!

Rated - 2 starsUNCONVINCING STORYLINE RUINS GREAT PICTURE

A customer from Stafford , 14/04/2008

Great cinematography enhanced by Blu-ray. Some great acting.

Both of which are seriously let down by the poor storyline and totally implausible ending - the last 20-odd minutes needs a reality check. It really did not have to end like it did. I have heard the Director's commentary which sets out his reason for the ludicrous ending. It doesn't make sense, it has no motive and is not convincing.

If renting this, be prepared for disappointment in the final 2 acts.

This is a great film. This in my opinion is up there with Eastwood's Unforgiven. There is real depth and character development in this enthralling story. Christian Bale is a farmer who is helping escort an infamous rogue gunslinger (Russell Crowe) to a destination with the hangmans noose. The tension and interplay between these two characters over the course of the film is immense. . Brilliant supporting roles by Peter Fonda and Logan Lerman (as Bale's son)

This is a genuine old-fashioned western classic.

An excellent western with excellent performances from Russel Crowe and Christian Bale. The film goes at a fair pace and has action and suspense through-out as the viewer is left guessing at Russel Crowe's motives and actions.

Faster and more action driven than the Forgiven and Once Upon the Time in the West with a gritty intergity from High Noon.

A must see for lovers of Westerns, Russel Crowe and Bale.

...that pretty much summed up my opinion as the film played out its climactic ending.

Based on a short story probably explains the lack of plot, storyline, depth of character etc. etc.

As the final scenes unfold you feel the writers either got bored or couldn't think how to end it. You cannot blame the cast, they are probably the only thing holding this all together, doing the best they can with a weak story.

It's a shame really, this could have been a good film, with a similar plot to Rio Bravo (but on the move) the ending could have been a blast.

It's understandable how they were trying to portray Russell Crowe's character but the end result seemed conflicted/confusing/unconvincing.

Shame really.
