Rated - 4 starsOh do believe the hype!

A customer from London, England , 22/10/2007

I’m not particularly into watching tv-series when aired on telly, as I find it too hard to commit to a time and day of the week so inevitably I end up watching the first episodes but give up half way through. “Heroes” was no exception but after watching the first 2 episodes I knew I had to get the series on DVD because it was just too good to miss! I loved every episode of it and in order not to give out any spoilers I will not get into the details. Believe the hype. This IS really good. Extremely well executed, it looks fantastic, the special effects are better than any TV series out there and the story grabs you and refuses to let go until the very end. The only criticism that I can think of is that in spite of what Tim Kring says, it is plagiarising X-men. Not that this is a bad thing but to claim otherwise is a bit embarrassing when the similarities are huge. Some of the characters even have the same powers as the heroes and villains of X-men. But I love it and I know of lot of people who are not into sci-fi but still loved the series. I can’t wait for series 2 to come out on DVD (as unfortunately I don’t have the patience to watch it on telly).

When I first heard the idea of this series I was excited. I love superheroes and american series like Lost, 24 and Smallville etc. Unfortunately, I don't love this. I wanted something as good as X-men, but in series form. Not necessarily like X-men, but as good as. Although an X-men series would rule! Anyway, this is more like an X-files take on the superhero genre. It is very dark and in my opinion, sometimes distasteful. The teenage girl for instance - instead of the Wolverine take on it, where you don't see anything unpleasant, this is much more graphic, with broken bones jutting out of her. It's nothing majorly bad but I prefer more 'taste' to my entertainment. It just doesn't have the same quality of other series either, the special effects were at times a bit tame even though the program had a huge budget. The flying at the beginning for example - it was very obvious they were wearing wires. And the characters were not generally likeable, all of them with their own miserable story to tell - does nothing go right for these people?? Hiro and Mr Bennett were my favourites though and I have to say the acting is top-notch by everyone. I did find the personalities of the characters changed a lot though, which was just plain weird. The psychopathic deranged killers had soft sides and the good guys turned murderers. Sylar for example, he actually killed innocent bystanders and had no problem with it and then suddenly he finds out what's going to happen and runs to his mum because he doesn't want to hurt anyone. What??! And Jessica was ruthless to begin with, when suddenly she's fighting alongside D.L. like they'd just had an arguement or something. She tried to kill him more than once. Some lovers tiff! And one thing I particularly disliked was how so many of the characters knew about everyone's powers. Like it was old news. One aspect that is awesome about superheroes is when everyone goes, 'You can do what?? That's amazing!' Instead, it's more like 'Yeah, yeah I know. So what? I can do something special too. Who cares?' This kills the excitement of their abilities somewhat for me. I also wish they would use their powers more in battle. Many times, Sylar would just stand there and let someone attack him when he had so many amazing powers at his disposal. Baffling. Finally, I have to say that the finale was a disappointment, after so much build-up and drama, it didn't really surprise or deliver anything impressive. It wasn't awful, but I felt that all the thought of amazingly intricate plotlines and clever connections between characters didn't present itself in the end. Which was a bit of an anti-climax. Overall, it did a lot wrong and some right. Not sure why it was so popular really. I probably won't be bothering with the next series.

Rated - 3 starsWhatever happened to the heroes...?

A customer from London, England , 03/07/2008

Yeah after much fanfare the series Heroes as a whole, was worth the fuss but it has to be said the final episode was pants. I mean come on! Americans may be slow on the uptake but us English are made of sterner stuff - I hope future climatice episodes offer more. I was expecting a bit more of a battle between Hiro and Sylo, and the Exploding Man anticlimax was a total let down.

Having said that, the series generally was good fun.
