Rated - 2 starsTurok or NOT Turok

Turok takes the player back to the age of dino's as well as the age of terrible gameplay. Let me explain...you begin on a burning space ship - cue tutorial 101(press button A, press button B etc...) OK pretty standard in most games. You also begin to notice the environment which either looks murky or shiny or glossy and you begin to realise that this looks more and more...well, like a cheap videogame.

The baddies(A.I. goons) are predictable and quite dumb. I encountered a massive gun fight only to turn the corner and casually walk up to a guard to slit his throat..??..then sniped another while his friend carried on looking left to right while standing 2 feet away..??

I guess the game relies more on quantity than quality.

Its a game to play just for the sake of playing..no enjoyment..no sense of achievement..disappointing.

The knife everyone raves about is quite a let down...the first time its cool then you just start ending up running at dino's and hoping to hit the RT trigger when the caption pops up...fun..??..err..no!

Presentation 6 (cut scenes are well done and the potential for a great game is there)

Sound 5 (apart from the forest and dino's not much else)

Graphics 4 (for a next gen consol...bad)

Gameplay 4 (some cool weapons but thats it..I know I was surprised too)

Overall Turok is not a terrible game just a really bad game with lots of potential that only turns to make it that much more frustrating. Rent only.

If I was to describe any particular part of Turok, then 'Poor' would be my description.

Turok is a game that builds itself on good ideas, then smashes these ideas until they're really not that good at all.

The main problem is the combat. In a game centered around fighting enemies, this should be fun, and to be fair, it does contain some good ideas.

For example, they've included Quick-Time Events, where you mash the buttons to get through certain scenes (Such as mashing L and R to get stab a raptor that's jumped on your character.). It seems like a good idea, until they're activated every few seconds. Every other time you get attacked by a dinosaur, you get a QTE. Because of this, they get old. Fast.

And then there's the gun combat. Every gun is horribly inaccurate except the sniper rifle, which doesn't have a crosshair unless you're looking down the scope.

And then there's the fact that you can't move if you're being shot, which means whilst you're being shot, you can't run to cover.

Then there's the knife. The knife has one hit kills which honestly are pretty cool. Sadly, they translate through into multiplayer, so the game turns into a huge knife fight.

On the plus side, they've got some good actors, the highlight being Christopher Judge (Teal'c from Stargate-SG1.). Sadly, the script - along with the rest of the game - is poor.

Finally, there's the graphics. The game uses Unreal 3 as the underlying engine, which is fine for corridor shooters, like Bioshock and Gears of War, but really doesn't work here. Turok is constantly trying to give the impression of a huge environment, but due to the limits of the engine, falls flat on it's face. The environments end up feeling incredibly cramped, with fairly frequent (Although short) loading screens. It's even worse because this could have all been avoided by using a different engine.

Overall, it really is a below average shooter. Stick with Halo or Call of Duty 4. And if those aren't available, play The Darkness.

Contrary to some of the other opinions, i got pretty into this game. In terms of graphics it beats halo 3 no probs (maybe not COD4, actually especially not the sniper level), there are lush jungle backdropsand the whole lost world is done with that slightly magical feel that comes from the excessively tall trees (reminds me of world of warcraft).

The enemies are interesting and try to trick you and outwit you instead of trying to outgun you which is only the case ion COD4 and Halo 3, and turoks knife fighting makes him properly hard.

Difficulty wise on normal I had to go back to checkpoints a few times, so i would consider starting on hard in hindsight.

I'm not sure whether its a problem, but the solution to most dinasaurs seems to be stabbing them in the eye with a rather large knife.

This game is very dull, the idea of this game is good but the way that it has been made makes it hard and very challenging to do anything especially get far in the story because the army men are quite skilled but the dinosaurs are no problem. This game has bad achievments which are 29 multiplayer and 14 singal player, I personally do not see the point of having more online achievments because the online play for this game sucks so DO NOT RENT
