Brief synopsis of Four Minutes

Following on from the success of The Lives of Others and The Counterfeiters, the award winning Four Minutes sees wrongfully imprisoned piano prodigy Jenny, a molotov cocktail of suppressed emotions and uncontrollable rage, locked in a constant battle with those around her. Together with Traude, a professional musician who wants to expose Jenny's talents at a national competition, the pair develop a volatile teacher-pupil relationship. As the duo plan their intent to make it to the finals, it soon becomes apparent that, once there, Jenny will have only four minutes to prove herself, and no guarantee of freedom afterwards. Starring multiple award winner Hannah Herzsprung (The Reader, The Baader-Meinhof Complex), Four Minutes is a cinema tour de force that combines classical music, gritty prison drama and powerful performances to winning effect.

Unfortunately I hadn`t realised this was a foreign film, this normally doesn`t bother me expect it was quite badly subtitled and it distracted from the film massively. Fell asleep about an hour in and wasn`t ever so bothered that I missed it.

OUTSTANDING FILM IN EVERY WAY. ACTING, SCRIPT PHOTOGRAPHY AND DIRECTION. THE KIND OF BRILLIANT FILM MAKING/STORY TELLING THAT WE IN THE UK HAVE LOST TOUCH OF.

Rated - 5 starsMusic wins

An excellent film. A prison film. A German film. Centred around the brutal life of a young woman, it uncovers the hidden horrors and the lost loves. It displays the present ignorance of those in authority whom we call 'normal.'

A film that spits in the face of hope. A film with an ending to savour. And the music reigns through the despair. Highly recommended.

Rated - 5 starsWorth the time

Excellent film - very graphic start and some graphic scenes throughout - however not excessive. Foreign language but shouldn't put you off. Very nearly as good as Lives of Others (which if you haven't seen is one of the best films of all time). Worth five stars...just. Watch it you will not be disppointed if you like depth and texture - a gritty film that uplifts.

Brilliant film. Harsh, down to earth, realism.
