I imported this game from Play-Asia (an english version that works on PAL systems), and I've never looked back. It's made by Mistwalker Studios, who made Blue Dragon and is comprised of Final Fantasys Hironobu Sakaguchi and Nobuo Uematsu, who are currently kings of the Japanese-RPG market.

Imagine all the best bits of the Final Fantasy series in one game. Then expand that game onto four discs, with high definition and seemless transition from Full Motion Video to ingame sequences. Add a top notch storyline (yes people, it's better than FF7) and you've got a killer game.

It makes Blue Dragon look like a side project. Lost Odyssey is the diamond in the rough, the epitome of the J-RPG genre. If you're interested in storyline, love high-def graphics, ever taken a liking to any J-RPG ever, you'll at least rent this game.

Most reports state a 50hr playthrough time, with around 10hrs of story. That's probably cutting it to its bare minimum, without doing all the sidequests. Blue Dragon took me 90hrs for 1000GS, so I'm expecting the same here, if not more (I'm slightly over 10hrs in, still on the first disc).

Highly recommended to any J-RPG fan.

Highly recomended for RPG fans

Since I played Final Fantasy VII all these years ago I have been a fan of J-RPGs and I have been waiting for a while for a good one to be released on the x-box 360 for a while now. Blue Dragon was so cute I felt embaressed to play it, and eternal sonata was just also a disapointment.

So I didn't really have high expectations for this game, and would of rented it first before buying it if it was available to rent. But since it had been getting positive reviews I risked my cash and bought it. When I got home and loaded it up I was struck by how similar it was to the final fantasy series. Excellent music, and presentation and suprisingly good voice acting and importantly for me a good story.

The gameplay is more challenging than normal since the game makes it very difficult to level your character once you can defeat the monsters in the area with ease. Plus the game puts you in challenging situations. For example the in one situation you have a part of magic users against monsters that are practically immune to magic. All good fun!

There is one thing that stops me from giving it the full 5 stars and that is the loading time, it is a serious issue on this game. When you go from one area to another you wait about 10 seconds while you stare the loading screen. Thats not really too bad and most of us can live with that. But at the random encounters you get while running around the world takes around 10 - 20 seconds from the battle music starting up to actually pressing a button to make your moves. Even the battles against easy enemies can take a couple of minutes which really takes away from your enjoyment of the game.

All in all this is the best Japanese-RPG for the 360, and would recommend it for anyone who enjoys these types of games. However, the loading time is a major issue and can hamper your enjoyment of it.

Boring

I played this game for about 2 hours and i would rather eat all four of the CD's it game with. It had great cut scenes and i loved the graphics but when it comes down to actually playing the game it's incredbly boring. I would wait for a cut scene to load, watch it then it would load again, i would start next to a door, walk through it and had to wait for it to load again into a cut scene and so on until i turned it off.

Too long!

For me the thing that drives JRPG's forward is the story line, lost odyssey's story line is not bad unfortunately it cant help but include some bad characters and random plot developments which get more annoying as the game goes on. The combat and character development arent bad and although the story definately starts strong by the time I was 35 hours in on the 4th disc I was bored and never finished the game. I have played JRPG's before and enjoyed them in the past. If your really like the genre this game is definately worth a shout but for me its not as good as I was hoping.

lost odyssey game

Great game, looks like a final fantasy game. Build your character skills (magic) and learn new skills from the other characters. Buy stronger weapons at some of the cities or find them hidden in objects scattered around locations. Starting a fight scene gets repetative and slightly annoying after a while, but my own personel gripe with this game came when i couldnt get disc 4 to work. Ive tried 2 copies of disc 4 and both crashed on the loading screen ( disc unplayable), although i do like the game and really wanted to see the end of the game, so ill probably try it again another time
