Brief synopsis of Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron

SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON is a refreshingly old-fashioned and gentle tale of a mustang stallion struggling to remain free in the old West. The film is a seamless blend of traditional hand-drawn and computer-generated animation. Opening with an impressive bird's eye pan of the Grand Canyon, from the viewpoint of an eagle, SPIRIT captures the unspoiled beauty of the land. The animals in this particular animated film do not talk, and Matt Damon provides effective, sparse narration from the perspective of Spirit, an adventurous young stallion who is captured by the U.S. Army. But Spirit will not let the soldiers saddle and ride him. An authoritarian colonel (voiced by James Cromwell) is determined to break Spirit, at one point starving the horse to weaken him. A Lakota prisoner, Little Creek (voiced by Daniel Studi) is impressed with the horse, and helps him to escape. Little Creek can't break the horse either. But the two learn to respect each other, and Spirit meets Rain, Little Creek's horse, and falls in love. The score was written by Hans Zimmer, and Bryan Adams wrote and performed the sweet, simple songs on the soundtrack. SPIRIT is a great-looking and lovingly crafted children's film.

Despite being beautifully animated (a flawless combination of old school hand-drawn animation and dazzling computer graphics), this wild mustang horse opera doesn't match the heart of classic Disney or the slick fun of modern digitaI efforts. Saddled with an overly moralistic and politically correct Old-West-on-the-verge-of-industrialisation story, this is strictly kids stuff with Matt Damon providing the first person narration (none of the animals talk, they just emote with expressive faces) and Bryan Adams crooning bland songs that pointlessly underline the action. From the untamed frontier setting used in An American Tail: Fievel Goes West to the archaic “cowboys and Indians” clichés, there's nothing new to get excited about here apart from a stunningly rendered train crash.

Simple sentimental tale of horses and Indians with little dialogue but lots of simple, sentimental songs and some nature-loving animation.

This is a story of a Mustang Stallion battling to escape and return to his home after being captured. The animation is superb and the soundtrack compliments the film perfectly. This is one of the best animated films I have watched in a long time and I didn't mind my children wanting to watch it again and again.

Spirit is the name of a wild horse and it his adventures that we follow. Despite Bryan Adams' warbling from time to time, this film is still worth seeing. You won't be dissapointed with the spectacular vistas and exciting scenes and thrills. Spirit and his mates have no cutesy voices and we only hear Spirit through the narration of Matt Damon. This is a nice short little epic. If all you want from a film is to feel uplifted and cleansed then go and see the Terminator. This on the other hand is a proper film. Sit back and enjoy, whatever your age.

Rated - 3 starsMy two children loved it

I rented this movie for my two children and they loved it!!! Although not a Disney movie the animation is brilliant and the soundtrack provided by Bryan Adams was very moving. My 6 year old daughter was reduced to tears and my 4 year old son thought it was 'great'. Not to be discounted just because it doesn't bear the Disney label.
