Brief synopsis of Sega Bass Fishing

Sega Bass Fishing is back and better than ever, returning with all-new intuitive controls which utilise both the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. This time round when players hook a big one, they can use the motion sensor as they wrestle to reel it in. With over 20 different types of lures to choose from, budding anglers can cast off using the Wii Remote to try and land one of four different types of freshwater bass. Sega Bass Fishing also offers players the freedom to select time-of-day and season during play which impacts the activity of the fish, their appetite, and their depth. Featuring 15 beautifully designed lake environments, Sega Bass Fishing also has four fun-filled game modes including Arcade, Tournament, Practice and Nature Trip.

Having played this on the Dreamcast with the rod accessory, I was expecting to be dissapointed by just using the Wiimote but that wasn't the case. After looking up the controls on the net, I'd sussed it and the fish were flying into my boat. My other half even ended up getting giddy when the big one was on my rod.

Only gets 3 stars as it's quite a limited game but worth a dabble.

I'm not a fishing person, but I was impressed by the graphics on the trailer, so I thought I'd try it. The graphics ARE good, but I found the gameplay dull and repetitive. It's obviously ported from elsewhere, and poorly too (ie: you can't use the Wii pointer to pick from a list - you have to scroll-and-click). Pick your bait in this way. You're now looking at a waterway with a guy in a boat, and a target circle near the bank. Scroll the circle back-and-forth along the bank then cast using the remote. No skill involved. Nothing happens, then, as a sort of afterthought , the guy casts and hey! You drop right into the target circle. Now you're underwater looking at your bait and line. GREAT graphics. You slowly drag your bait along (A or B button or wind the numchuk, all with a rachet sound from the remote). Brillantly realised fish wander glumly about (as they do). Sooner or later one bites. Hit it with a jerk of the remote, then start winding it in. Woah! The tension on the tension meter goes into the red -LOWER THE ROD!!.... now wind a bit more... and so on. Sometimes it gets away, and sometimes we go above water and there's the guy reaching down and pulling it out, with the weight flashing up.

Like all that? Great. Now do it again. And again. And again. Had enough yet? Ok, do it again. Different bit's of banking, if you like. Probably differing bits of swimmy underwater, too. Same ol' fish coming up, biting, winding in....oh hum? Had enough yet? Boy, sooner or later you will have. If you havin't much on your list, you could waste a rental on it, but believe me, you'll have to be a special kind of person to like this enough to buy.
