Rated - 3 starsOld Skool.

A very old-school style of beat-em-up, which isn't necesarrily bad. You basically have your regular attacks [varying punches/kicks], and every character has about 5 mid-level special moves [quick examples: Joker= dissapearing in a cloud of smoke and leaping out of it at you in different ways, Subzero= freezing you temporarily, Batman= chucking batarangs or dissapearing and pouncing on you from above] and some lesser specials [Joker= chucking bombs, Superman= heat-vision], which are then obviously mixed together in any combo's you want.

There are also situations when one character will be thrown through a wall or over the side of the arena, resulting in a little mini-game of trying to counter your opponents button-presses, if you succeed you'll be on-top when you land on the ground and deal damage, if you fail multiple times your opponent can pull off an automatic mid-air special that will slam you to the ground.

There are obviously Fatalities, aswell. Brutal finishers you can deliver after you've won the match. Some of them are brilliant, but they can be pretty fiddly to pull off in the 5 seconds or so you get to do them, especially considering you have to be specific distances away for different fatalities. Can be very frustrating.

Its actually pretty refreshing when compared to grossly over-complicated beat-em-ups like Soul Calibur 4 with all its customisation, armour degrading and ultimate techniques.

Its got a story-mode with an actual semblance of a story [1 story for MK guys, 1 for DC] involving a mystery of characters sliding into the others universe and some kind of rage condition taking poeple over.

Rated - 4 starsGreat Fun.

I have always prefered mortal komabt to all of the other fighting style games because it is easy to get used to, plays at the right pace, does not require button bashing and has some of the best characters to play with.

You can have some great battles on this game weather your playing story mode, online or with friends.

All of the classic mortal kombat special moves are easy to do and usually down, back low kick will do a special move for most characters i dont know if thats a good thing but i dont see it as a bad thing.

If you dont really like dead or alive you will like this, if you think dragon ball z was not too bad, you will like this. If you like crazy fighting games with 100 things going on at once 1000000000 hit combos characters that can pretty much destroy anything with one cool move then you wont like this.

Rated - 3 starsGood But Not Great

To start off I must say that I’m not the biggest fan of arcade style beat-em-ups so I’ll tried to go into this game with an open mind as it features my favourite character Batman.

The games story line revolves around the DC and MK universe colliding with each other after Darkseid and Shao Kahn are defeated simultaneously by Superman and Raiden. As both universes collide it brings about portals in which both DC and MK characters are sucked into each others universes which leads them to believe each other is the enemy. The story line isn’t the greatest nor the most interesting but seeing as in comic book land anything can happen it is believable.

Both MK and DC have their own storyline and will give you an hour or two of game play and some easy gamerscore points. The only problem that I found was that when playing it through first you don’t unlock the chapter 3 achievement the first time round so you must reply it.

Other game modes are the Kombo Challenge where you have 10 stages to follow different combo's, this isn’t the greatest nor most fun mode as you will often find yourself doing the right combo's but not getting the stage complete as you didn’t get the timing right. Overall this mode is tricky and will leave you more than frustrated but with each character only giving you 5GS you can easily skip this mode all together.

The final mode is Arcade Challenge where you can play as each character and fight through each stage meeting a different character after every fight. After you defeat Darkseid you then learn the ending to the character you choose to fight with, (e.g. Batman builds a defence systems around the globe to ensure that the 2 universes don't collide).

On a more positive note the move lists aren’t as long as in other beat-em-ups (*cough* Soul Caliber *cough*) so learning different moves isn’t impossible although tapping X,X,X works pretty well.

Overall:

Gameplay - 6/10 provides entertainment, but not engaging enough.

Graphics - 7/10 nice backgrounds and cut scenes but doesn’t take full advantage of next gen power

Voice Over - 7/10 all characters sound how they should but if you grew up with Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy voicing Batman and the Joker doesn’t sound right.

GamerScore Hardness - 5/10 if your willing to put the time in to do each character you will get most of the gamerscore points

Rented this game to see if it was worth buying and im glad i rented it not and didn't buy it. As its just like playing mortal Kombat years ago but with more sprites and new men to control. I wished they had just moved on alot more as i fell they have missed a big chance here. Its slow and you will get bored within a few hours top.
