Brief synopsis of Tomb Raider: Underworld

For generations, stories have been told of the fearsome weapon of the Norse god Thor. Legend holds that he who wields the hammer has the power to smash mountains into valleys and the strength to destroy even the gods. For more than a thousand years it has existed only as a myth... until now. In an ancient ruin on the floor of the Mediterranean Sea, Lara Croft uncovers proof of the Norse underworld and the mythical hammer. As she attempts to unravel the secrets behind these myths, Lara's perilous journey leads her toward a forgotten power that, if unleashed, could lay waste to all civilisation.

I saw this is XBOX360 magazine and instantly wanted to play and promptly went home and downloaded the demo from XBOX Live that night. I started playing and i wont spoil and surprises for anybody but i implore you all to at least have a decent look at this game. Lara runs, climbs and just generally moves and interacts with her surroundings like never before.

This is definitely on my Xmas wish list

Well, what to say about tomb raider underworld...

I played the demo from xbox marketplace and was impressed by the level of detail Lara's surrounding world has, the way lara moves, her appearance... all of which were top class stuff and what i hope to be a milestone other companies aim to achieve for all their games.

However. And thats a big however, infact ill start it again .... HOWEVER. Once you get past the charade of oh my god look how amazing everything looks. You begin to realise what your actually playing.

The AI are without a doubt the stupidest thing i have ever come across. The term, find cover, clearly doesnt exist in the human AI whilst some new primal instinct like running around wildly, not really doing much, seems to have arisen for the animals in the game. Shocking stuff, unforunately its really noticable.

Furthermore the combat is disgusting, the ridiculous amount of bullets you need to plow into someone to kill them is insane (same for the animals). If anyones ever played 'Old School' mode on Call of duty 4. Id probably say its even more ridiculous than that. To add to this already well established level of terribleness in combat. The skill required to do any killing is minimal. You lock on and hammer that trigger as much as possible, diving around to minimalise damage you take.

Laras in general is one of the greatest factors going for this game, but unfortunately, like other tomb raider games, the problem of falling to a very common, painful death is quite apparent. The amount of times i was playing and having to shout at the screen, NO LARA THAT ISNT WHERE I ASKED YOU TO JUMP was insane taking me back to a recent checkpoint, which fortunately are very frequent.

The complexity of puzzles is also an issue in this game. Whilst some are obvious (in a nice way) others are so ridiculously complicated i ended up using a guide which afterwards i ended up using for every level just to get things. Even using the guide i was thinking, how on earth was i supposed to work that out!? To add to the complexity of these puzzles, when jumping around to get Lara from A to B, the camera can often be very awkward and you end up taking blind leaps, and as stated before, end up in a very painful, all too familiar death.

I rented it for a few days and sent it back uncompleted, ill leave you to make your own mind up, but you certainly know where I stand
