Brief synopsis of Burnout Revenge

Just think incredibly enough, some gamers, somewhere will not have been exposed to Burnout Revenge on its previous release. Players whose first and only console was a 360 (are there really such beings!?) have waited for around four months to get involved, and can now get their mitts on the brute. What have they been missing? Blimey, where to start? Manna from heaven for those not sated by the Electronic Arts-ified Burnout Takedown from 2004, Revenge restates the case for BO's claim as the most insanely quick racing series. Truth told, in the initial gameplay, there's not a great deal of difference between Takedown and Revenge; even as far as an hour into the single-player game, the uptempo sounds of popular beat combos Yellowcard, Bloc Party and Dead 60s are the sole pointer as to the game's release date, what with EA being all up to date and hip to all the best new driving music. Ahem. Oh, the Revenge motif that keeps cropping up too - that's a giveaway.

So, after an hour, we've made a hi-definition dent in more than a few shiny cars, and only a 3% impression in the game as a whole. We're no maths geniuses, but we reckon that could mean around 35-40 hours of solo gameplay, depending on how well you progress and whether you're satisfied with a merely 'good' performance and a bronze medal in any given event.

Race events are plentiful: Race is as simple as it gets, as you take down rivals in a no-holds barred rampage to the finishing line; Traffic Attack invites you to beat time targets as you race through busy thoroughfares; Burning Lap is a beat the clock event; Road Rage gives you a time limit and a remit to take out as many rivals as possible; Eliminator is a last-man-standing event; Preview is a quick test drive of some ridiculously fast vehicles against the clock; and GP Race is a multi-race battle, the fastest of the lot. Through Xbox Live, the 'brand-new-for-360' Live Revenge feature tracks your rivals and calls out those that need some serious payback. Build up relationships with gamers that you take out, or take you down, and then let Live Revenge recall them and tell you how they are literally rubbing you up the wrong way. Burnout Revenge is about long memories and short tempers, especially on 360.

Crash events are preceded by a fly-by crash-camera sequence from which you can plan a trail of destruction to score the maximum of points, and are an interesting diversion from the main game at best. The second iteration of Burnout (Point of Impact) still features - in our opinion - the ultimate version of the Crash event. Still, there's hours of fun to be had in both solo and multi-player modes. There's a World Tour campaign to take on, with its own Crash and Race events.

It's all a bit too reminiscent of Burnout Takedown to be an absolutely essential purchase for those who still have the 2004 game in their possession, but to the few gamers who have resisted the franchise so far - not to mention those weirdos who have a 360 and nothing else - Burnout Revenge should fly off the grid.

I don't think I need to tell you how many levels etc. this game has, you have heard it all before...

One thing I have to say is this, it never gets boring ! I completed the game to 100% within 40 game hours, but have now clocked up over 100 more in online play. It is every bit as fast and furious as solo play, with the addition of banter during the races, and the excellent team 'road rage' events demand communication to win through. A definate must play !!

This is a revamped version of EAs Burnout Revenge which was released across all last gen platforms.

The upgrades in this 360 version include native HD widescreen visuals with improved graphics and modelling, a reply feature, 10 new crash zones, Xbox Live play, 30 second clip creation and sharing and probably some other minor stuff like an extra car or two.

Would you buy this if you already have the same game for PS2 or original Xbox? Probably not at the price tag and the structure etc will essentially be the same.

Would you buy this if you've never played or owned Burnout Revenge before? I would say you probably should.

This game is beautiful in its HD form. This is not Full Auto, this is smooooth, fast and prone to giving you the equivalent of a thousand yard stare as you scope the horizon for impending danger are you hurtle forward at 200mph.

I love this game, its a lot of fun and has some terrifying moments.

It is moderately difficult though. If you're looking for a quick rent to increase gamerscore this might not be the one for you.

Well worth a rent.

What can i say, brought this back in march 2007 and still playing it today.

One minute your flying down the wrong way on a freeway at 200MPH barely missing cars as you shunt your opponents into minivans and 18 wheelers accompanied by a slow motion cinemtic takedown camera. the next your trying to score a 150 car pile-up on a spagetti juction rapidly mashing the B button when your crashbreaker is available to send all vechiles flying in all directions. All of this happens at a smooth 60 fps with fantastic HD visuals, sparks, explosions, car models, scenery, whatever grabs your attention it all looks lush. Plenty of different modes to suit your destructive appetite and alot to work through. Even when you've finished the lengthy Career Mode the online aspect will still have you pinned to your seat.

ARCADE RACING IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THIS GOOD. BUT IT IS !!!

it would be a crime not to rent this and a must-buy for arcade racer fans 5 outta 5

I've had this game for over a month now, not only because I've been in the middle of A level exams but also because this game is just FULL to the proverbial brim with content!! there's no less then 10 category's of races each with roughly 10 events in it, now its been awhile since I stepped into a maths class but im pretty confident in saying that's 100 events, and these aren't just the run of the mill events found in most racing games which just have you go from A to B then do it all again in a slightly different car on a slightly different track.....this is what puts me off racing games in general and what attracts me to burnout. Its got its thumbs in many pies here, it dabbles in the ordinary racing genre but also boasts a range of other fun and interesting game styles. there's the arcade style road rage races which are about making your opponents crash to get on the podium, there's the newly added traffic attack where you have to drive along causing carnage to civilian drivers as you go around the track. And then there's the final event worth mentioning, crash mode which is all about causing a pile up. while some times frustrating these events are undoubtedly fun and after all what enjoyment would you really get from a game you could complete with your eyes closed?? The graphics in HD are top notch, the colours are vibrant and the textures are clear, the sound is pretty amazing, well once you turn off the soundtrack which is somewhat painful to listen unless your into all those American 'rock' bands who wouldn't know rock or real music if it stamped on their face, but that's going besides the point. the engine sounds really get your heart racing and the boost sounds are like a jet taking off in your room i'd love to experience it with surround sound but im not White collar enough to afford it. The cars all handle well with 78 of them in total only of about 50 i could be bothered to unlock and the observation i made was they are mostly all unique in their style and look but feel pretty much the same to drive with the main difference being speed and sensitivity in corners, but who cares you don't get burnout for the variety of cars you get it for the pure octane action and carnage that its become famous for. admittedly i still feel burnout peaked at its second outing before it took a turn down sell out lane and got lost in the woods of pop culture, although this instalment is better then the 3rd but there's still room for improvement, i haven't played on paradise yet (well only a demo) but even if you have still give this a go cos it seems to be of a different style which arguably works better. The last element of the game is the multi player, this is among the games strengths, BUT it is ruined by a factor outside of the developers control, the factor in question is the socially deprived morons who play it most of which would be better off in anger management class then playing on this game. the underlying nature of this game is making the other racers crash, this causes a high level of competition as no one wants to face the humiliation of being 'taken out' so yeh most of the people are obnoxious, its ok if like me you find it amusing arguing with these types of cretins but if you shy away from conflict then either dont bother or go on the team based game which can be a laugh with the right set of people. I stand buy my review title though, your better off buying it, theres so much to do and a good reward of game score for your hard work if u want it. to rent it is a bit of a waste, its not the type of game you can play for hours on end, its not meant for that. it works best as a game picked up every so often and played a bit at a time so go out and buy it, it doesn't cost a lot these days and its worth every penny.
