Brief synopsis of Monster Hunter: Freedom

Have you ever wanted to hunt giant monsters and mythical beasts? Maybe not, but anyhow, heres your chance to do so with Monster Hunter: Freedom.

In Monster Hunter: Freedom gamers are given numerous quests which all ultimately involve battling and (hopefully) slaying monstrous creatures. The game starts with the option of customising your very own monster hunter hair, face, voice and other essential attributes needed to slay large beasts. You are then taken to a village hub where you can accept different challenges, ranging from retrieving an egg from the nest of a fire-breathing dragon to hunting down extremely large creatures. You can forage slain monsters for food and collect bones for weapons/armour. When challenges have been completed successfully, players will receive certain awards that will upgrade weaponry and equipment that will make monster hunting even more effective.

Up to four people can team up in co-operative multiplayer missions via the PSP system's ad hoc mode. Gamers can also trade certain items as well as guild cards, which track points that are awarded when participating in multiplayer missions. There is a new treasure hunters co-op game for two players, where you must collect various treasures in a specific time to achieve high scores that will earn different items. There are also mini games to play that include harvesting plants, collecting items and completing many small tasks that will allow you to obtain items that will be of use in the main game.

Rated - 5 starsAwesome game!

My son and I both have this game as we both played the original Monster Hunter on the PS2. It does take time to get into, so if you want to start slaying giant dragons from the start this isn't for you. If you don't mind putting in the effort the rewards are huge with scores of different weapons and many armour types. It's best played with two or more people, but Freedom has made it easier for solo players to advance, which was something I believe the original lacked. If you, like me, enjoy Final Fantasy games, Diablo or RPG's in general, I believe you love'll this. Take your time with it, get used to the camera (which can be tricky to start with). Personaly, this is one of the best games I have ever played, but then I love RPG's.

My my my, this game certainly takes some getting used to. The lack of any inteligence on the camera's behalf is enough to send this game right back whence it came from. How can you hunt monsters if you can't see the blighters?

Now that little niggle is out of my system I can go on to say that this game is actualy quite good fun and worth trying. I know all the 'official' reviews say it's missing stuff from the PS2 version but if you're willing to spend a couple of days getting used to the gameplay its actualy very good. Working out how your gear works best is part of the challenge in becoming a hunter I guess, and when you defeat your first dragon/wyvern you'd be amazed at the satisfaction gained! It might even be enough to make you forget there's no target lock!

Final words? I quite enjoyed it!

I headed into Monster Hunter with an open mind. It's one of the most popular games on the PSP in Japan, leading the software charts on PSP by a massive stretch. However, after a short stint with the game, I fail to see why.

Monster Hunter plays like a traditional MMO, with the standard get quest, kill stuff, loot cycle. The problem is that this is all there seems to be to it. The combat is simplistic and dull, and the camera seems to want to point the exact wrong way at any given point. The game seems overcomplicated in terms of the extras you can do eg. cooking, fishing etc, with both of these requiring lightning fast reactions to succeed. The lack of special skills or magic is also a minus point, reducing combat to one button with guarding.

My biggest problem with the game however is the grinding. It seems to be able to acquire or accomplish anything of note, you must put hours and hours of effort into a task. For a handheld system, this is just not viable, with some challenges taking upwards of half an hour to finish, and according to gamefaqs, this time only rises. I fail to see how fighting the same monsters again and again can be exciting enough to be the number one selling PSP game in Japan.

Overall: Dont believe the hype.

Rated - 1 stargameplay... can i have some please

Andy from Worcester, England , 02/11/2007

I had heard great things about this, and boy what a let down. Dull, repetative, and thats the good things i have to say about this. Seriously though, graphically it looks nice. its not far off a console standard, but that not enough. Looking good doesnt equate to an automatic classic game as some reviews would have . It just not fun. Glad i rented and found out for myself, some people may find this laborious game to thier liking but for me it needed to be more focused less linear, and ultimately less like pressing a single attack butoon over and over and over again...
