Brief synopsis of Grand Theft Auto IV

The Grand Theft Auto series is given the Xbox 360 treatment in GTA IV - the first next-gen title in the series!

What does the American Dream mean today? For Niko Bellic, fresh off the boat from Europe, it is the hope he can escape his past. For his cousin, Roman, it is the vision that together they can find fortune in Liberty City, gateway to the land of opportunity. As they slip into debt and are dragged in a criminal underworld by a series of shysters, thieves and sociopaths, they discover that the reality is very different from the dream in a city that worships money and status, and is heaven for those who have them and a living nightmare for those who don't.

This game is going to be nothing special. Judging from the disaster that was San Andreas, as well as Liberty and Vice City Stories, this is going to be another game that everyone hypes up before it's out and then complains when they realise it's awful. GTA has gone downhill since Vice City.

Rated - 4 starsAfter completing 100% of the game...

I rushed out and bought this the first day it came out, and have since completed GTA4 100%, all missions, jumps, strangers, birds etc etc and feel I need to say a few things after reading all these completely useless 'reviews' that came out weeks before the game did, saying 'this will rock, this is going to be perfect' etc etc. It rocks alright but it ain't perfect that's for damn sure, it feels like an unfinished product and is very glitchy, which isn't really acceptable when you remember that it was postponed for seven months so the company could fix all these glitches! Anyway that aside GTA4's pretty cool, the graphics hold up well for the most part, the driving is a bit different than the last games but works out better once you get used to it although the motorbikes aren't much fun anymore, the city itself is well done, lots of hidden areas and things to keep you busy for weeks, and loads of talkative people to run over which never really gets old, as the people react pretty much the way they would in real life if you hit them at high speed with a Ferrari, short of ripping in two. The on-foot action still needs a bit of work, as it feels quite clunky at times, although the ability to hide behind things and stake out your enemies, Metal Gear Solid style is a welcome addition. As for the story, the missions, they're really fun once you get past the first 30 or so, some of the characters are pretty weak though, not that it matters too much I guess. Several decisions to be made in the game also which will affect how the rest of the game plays out. Driving around picking up friends and taking them bowling, drinking etc is tedious and boring, but has to be done if you want a few bonus things. Hunting for all the hidden things is damn good fun and finding all the pigeons will have you pulling your hair out! Anyway I'm running out of space but to summarise, GTA 4 kicks ass, but not as much as San Andreas does. GTA 4 is a hell of a lot easier to finish, it is glitchy but still good fun, it does't deserve all the 10/10's it's been getting, and a quick google search will reveal that Rockstar Games bribed alot of the more influential review sites into giving it overly high scores. Online is good fun but can be brutal if you're new to GTA! Be warned! 4/5, hopefully the next GTA game will be a big improvement over this one, although for 39 quid it's a damn good deal.
