Rated - 5 starsAs important to this decade as Mario was in the 80's

James Holloway from Paignton, England , 10/04/2006

I've found a place to stop. Somehow I've managed to prise myself away from Oblivion. During this break, I'll stock up on easy to open snacks, coffee's and cold drinks - not to mention the much needed run to the bathroom.

Yes, Oblivion is everything you've heard. Its inner joy proceeds much further than the interviews, screen grabs and videos you've seen. To some, it's snuck up and smacked them in the face. How can you have not seen a game of this magnitute arriving?

Elder Scrolls is regarded as a highly reliable game series. The previous installment, Morrowind, was noted as one of the finest RPGs ever - boasting of 200 hours of gameplay and a world where you could do anything you wanted. Well, if that sounded good to you, I wonder how you'll feel to know that Oblivion has well over 1800 hours of gameplay, over 15 square miles of treadable land, and 1000's of interacting, killable, stealable, social, well voiced NPC's.

My character has evolved to the state where my own experience reads like a synopsis for a story of its own.

'I woke from the misty cell of my imprisonment, not knowing how I managed to get there. My life previous is unobtainable from my memory - but I know I am a nobel Nord. What began as an honourable due of protecting Emperor Uriel Septim and his long lost heir has now changed. I awoke from a bed in the Imperial City to discover bloody marks upon my neck. I shyed from the light and citizens of Tamriel. Eventually, my skin paled and people noticed. I ignored my duty to serve the heir, in search of my cure. That is when I stole my first horse.

My life slowly drained during the hours of the sun. But it was not until dark; in the confines of a friendly inn, that I decided to pick the lock of the room next to mine and fed upon the girl that slept - waking her in the process. With blade drawn, I cut her down to quiet the screams.

From a nightmare, I woke to find a hooded man before me. He knew I killed that night. And from there, he welcomed me to join the Dark Brotherhood.

The only catch was, I had to slay in cold blood again...'

There is so much to talk about with Oblivion, that it's almost impossible to know where to start and which issue to talk about first.

All I can say is, is if you've read this far into my babbling and wish to hear more, then Oblivion is definitely worth the purchase and not just a rental.

After playing this game, Oblivion makes all other games pale and feel embarrassed in comparison. This is how gaming should be done, and this is spoken from someone who never played Morrowind and never took notice of Oblivion until I watched highlights of a 12 hour marathon on Gamespot.

Rated - 5 starsLive another world

Paladin Paladin from Hayes , 02/08/2006

I was playing this game for 120 hours now and still enjoy it. It's absolutely different game than others. You actually live the story. It is character diversity and huge world with awful lot of side quests and fraction quests that will keep you playing. You can be mage, warrior, bowman, or mix it all if you want. Every character can be succesful, every combination. You can solve quests quietly, almost invisible or just rush into action. Yet after playing so long I still discover new things to do, new places to go. It's truly masterpiece.

This game is excellent to start off with but the story line becomes repetitive and boring.

The thing that makes ths game so good is th side stories and levels.

This game looks fantastic in HD and is one of the best RPG on the 360

Emma Curtis from Isle of Wight , 02/04/2006

Simply a breathtaking game. A 1st or 3rd person RPG depending on how you would like to play it. The game is completely open ended, you can do the main quest or simply explore the world doing the hundreds of side missions at your own pace. Even once the main quest is complete, the game does not end and you can continue searching for secrets. The enemies are as varied as the quests, with some true moments of terror and shock. This game is probably the one to own at the moment and will give you the most for your money out of all the 360 games. It plays with similar controls to Half life 2, being an FPS/RPG. Maybe not to everyones taste but i recomend trying it at the least.

Rated - 5 starsA totally immersive RPG experience

kevinsuperstar from Glasgow , 31/03/2006

This game is as close to stepping into another world as you're likely to get for a long, long, time. The world is enormous, and stocked with characters who go about their own lives regardless of you, unless you should choose to get involved them. The lock picking, persuasion, and some other skills are represented by mini-games so that your skill as a player counts as much as your characters skill. The failing of previous renditions of having to do the boring travel yourself is remedied by 'fast travel', and activating a current quest for display on the map means you avoid the frustration of not being able to find your way to your destination. The graphics, and customisability of your character, are astonishing. Enough of a plot to keep you from feeling at a loose end, but non-linear enough for you to feel freedom of choice. A vast improvement over the previous elder scroll games. Unmissable for RPG fans, and recommended for all players who enjoy deeply immersive single player gaming.

Sorry, although everyone I know with a 360 says this game is great I thought it was so dull and way too slow. RPG lovers may get into it but otherwise just avoid.

Rated - 5 starsUtterly Immense

A customer from Elven Gardens, Imperial City , 24/05/2006

Easily the most immersive game ever written. You dont play Oblivion, you live it. The world is rendered so beautifully and accurately that at first you are waiting for the flaws to show themselves. I mean, no game can be this good, can it? Well it is. The flaws never come. Every tree and bush and blade of grass appears unique. At no point have I seen any area of the world that looks like a cut_and_paste of another. Love and attention has been lavished on this game as it was painstakingly put together, and it shows. A genuine rival for multiplayer online games and to be honest I found the lack of idiots shouting 'LOL' at me a refreshing change. Really - give this game a look.

Probably a good game if you've never played action rpg's on a PC before, or never seen a MMORPG...

These games don't usually translate that well onto consoles for starters, but add that to the fact that it's pretty samey and lacking depth on the action front, and you've got a pretty un-enticing game.

The game map is tiddly in comparrison to any online games and you soon get bored of visiting the strangely familiar cave / house / castle etc over and over again.

Don't bother with this unless you've not got any paint to watch dry......

Rated - 5 starsBest RPG of all time for a console

Mr. Ferris from Ireland , 29/01/2007

Firstly lets start off with the fact that there are over 1000 individually created characters each with their own mission each day. Firstly you create your own character and then the fun begins and with enough missions and side missions to keep you going for months, this is a must for anyone who has not yet played it

A customer from Lancashire , 22/05/2006

This game is absolutely phenomenal. It's totally immersive, you intend to play for 1/2 an hour and end up turning off 3 hours later. I have never played a game with so much to do that actually keeps you interested in the storyline. Even if you decide to change character and start again the way you play the game will change.

Rent it, try it, send it back, then buy your own copy

Rated - 5 starsAmazing

Chris Rogers from Rugby, England , 27/04/2006

I've been waiting two years now for the release of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, and thankfully it doesn't disappoint. And considering the amount of hype surrounding this game, that's quite an amazing achievement.

As with Morrowind you are invited to create any character you can possibly imagine and embark on your own adventures. You can play as much or as little of the main quest as you want; there are an abundance of surprisingly interesting side-quests to be found throughout the game. Even from the first few moments of play it is clear that the attention to detail in Oblivion is on a scale never seen before (imagine a next-gen RPG equivalent of the GTA series and you get an idea of what this game is like).

Character creation is surprisingly deep, although ultimately you're going to end up playing as either a mage, a thief (or stealth-based character) or a warrior. Or something in-between. One of the best things about Oblivion is that depending on what type of character you create, your experience will be different each time you play through. For example, while hacking enemies to pieces with an axe was fun when playing as a warrior, I found that a stealth-based approach to combat can be just as rewarding when playing as a thief.

Ultimately Oblivion is so much better than Morrowind because it is so much more fun to play. While Morrowind was an excellent game that was entertaining throughout, I never found it especially thrilling to play. That's where Oblivion is different. Almost every side-quest you embark on will feature an interesting story or at least one surprising plot twist.

The fast travel system is a welcome addition to the game. While on one hand the best thing about this game is the potential for exploration, on the other the worst thing about Morrowind was the constant walking you had to do to get anywhere. Thankfully the fast travel only allows you to jump to locations (other than towns) that yo've already been to, leaving in some element of exploration.

The graphics are generally stunning, considering the scale of the game. Some of the cities look especially brilliant, and the dense vegetation of the forests is nothing short of breathtaking. There is some trouble with pop-up, but this really does nothing to affect your enjoyment of the game.

Sound is pretty much spot-on. The music suits the game brilliantly, but by far the best feature is the dialogue. Every single character has something to say to you, and gone are the pages of text you were forced to read in Morrowind; everything NPC's say has been fully voice-acted.

There are one or two problems, however. Probably the most significant are the numerous glitches that appear throughout. Most of them aren't particularly serious but they all serve to remind you that the game isn't perfect. Also, the red curser at the bottom of the screen is always telling you EXACTLY where you need to go. Why? All it does is detract from the sense of exploration that makes these games so great. There isn't even an option to turn it off. Nevertheless, Oblivion is still an amazing game.

In terms of value, while the 360 version is considerably more expensive than the PC version, the amount of gameplay hours you will find in Oblivion easily makes it worth the asking price. Very highly recommended.

role playing game oblivion - its my own fault as i hate his genre of games. Slow and time consuming with huge amounts of things you can store and use at some point during the game but you dont know when so you just keep going around storing it all up - yawn yawn yawn. Oh and every so often you get to kill something using really basic one button attacks yawn yawn yawn.

BOOM your head explodes with the sheer magnitude of Oblivion. You never want to stop and you never want to give up its that good.

Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild quest lines were my favourite with Mages Guild coming in a close third. Does anyone actually enjoy doing the Fighters Guild quest's. I found them incredibly VULGAR.

Anyway seriously rent, buy or whatever this game it is utterly stupid of anyone not to.

BIG BIG BIG. Yay love it all.

kevski kevski from Weymouth , 05/09/2006

Purely because of this game!! It's soooo good, I hardly ever get up! It's just so addictive, it has to be the best RPG I’ve ever played - and that includes Final fantasy (I never thought I’d say that). and the detail of the water or the night sky is simply breathtaking!

You can go ANYWHERE on the map and speak to anyone, there are hundreds of places to investigate, ransack for treasure and side quests as well as the main quest. You have so much control over your characters skills appearance weapons and armour, it's simply brilliant!

It is well worth the money, I have played for hours and hours and still have so much left to do!

I know someone said it's boring, it's not, like all RPGs it is a little slow to start, but that is just so it can show you the ropes and controls in more detail for first time players and also lets you get used to the controls.

I would recommend this game to anyone. If I had to have only one game for my 360, it would be this! I wish i could give it more than 5 stars

Rated - 5 starsA whole world - go explore!

Iain Hingston from Aberdeen , 14/07/2006

Lose yourself in Oblivion and you will lose days of your life. This game, with all its flaws, is still the msot engaging, involving and ultimately entertaining RPG I've played since FFVII on PS1. Yes the pop-up is bad, the loading intrusive, the battle system unwieldy and the difficulty curve steep. However, it is the most believable world yet created, a world populated by characters who all speak and (almost) all of which have something worth listening to. The wealth of story missions, side quests and simply wandering around on your horse exploring mean that you will never - ever - get bored. If you are? Do another side-quest. Become a Master mage, thief, fighter, assassin, alchemist - any and all of the above and so much more. I'm 100 hours in and so far I have played 2 story quests, the rest of my time has been devoted to saving random maidens, becoming a vampire, curing my vampirism, assassinating for money, exploring dungeons, boats, castles, shops etc etc. Basically, it wipes the floor with all other offline RPGs and has some cracking downloads to boot from Live (I play this on a 360). Go get, live the life and forget your own!

Rated - 5 starsAn essential survival guide for TES:Oblivion

Rob Brown from Canterbury, UK , 28/04/2006

You will need:

1. Snacks within easy reach

2. ..to unplug the phone.

3. ..to call-in sick (probably best do that before you unplug the phone).

You will also need to prepare to surrender:

1. Your sleep pattern.

2. Your social life.

It is best if you have a lot of:

1. Time.

As with its predecessors, Oblivion is immersive and all-consuming. You will create a fully fleshed-out character and jet away to the land of wizards and trolls, thieves and warriors. An epic landscape awaits your exploration, and a story demands a lead character.

Oblivion is not perfect, but most of the flaws will be both quickly apparent and even quicker dismissed. Technically it is not as vast or even as well-written as its forbears, but when it is as consistently beautiful and challening as it is, you will likely not mind. An experience not to be missed.

Book your boat today.

Rated - 5 starsUtterly Brilliant. You must have this game!!

trickytrev from Bury, Lancs , 01/02/2007

Simply put, this is THE game to own for the 360. Rent first by all means but marvel at the stunning landscapes, detailed armour and weapons,'orrible creatures and that most elusive of all ingredients of new games,GAMEPLAY. In abundance in fact. The main quest will keep you slashing or casting away for some time but the main body of this game lies in the factions and side quests. Become archmage of Fighters guild champ,Arena gladiator grand champ etc etc.. Throw in the many downloads available on xbox live (Knights of the Nine is awesome and is 5-10 hours itself) and this game has everything you need to while away hours levelling up and learning skills whilst drooling over the quite breathtaking graphical splendour. Just for the record, I run the 360 through the component lead but on a CRT 32' widescreen and it still blows your mind to look at. Had it running on a mate's 43' HDTV and it looks incredible. Also Jeremy Soule has composed a fantastic musical classical score which is even better than the Morrowind one. Having an afinity for RPG's would definitely help but is a game no one should disregard until they have tried it. Didnt win all those awards of 2006 for nothing, check it out now. You wont regret it.

Wayne Bond from Caerphilly (Wales) , 02/04/2006

There are not that many titles out on the 360 right now that justify spending £45 - £50 on them but this one is the best value for money yet! The sheer size of the game will keep you going for months! If your thinking of renting it from here it will end up costing you more than buying it, its that huge! but do check it out. Is it any good?... Well as it goes it is a truely awesome game, its an RPG so its not to everyones tatses but its visually stunning, hugely immisive and exteremly free-roaming giving you the freedom to do what you please. A must see game, i highly recommen it. 9/10

A huge game full of such depth that you will not be able to stop playing. I have already amassed over 150 hours to this game, and it is still the one I want to get back to and finish (I am about 50% through). The infinite roles and sandbox nature of this game make it feel like GTA but with more direction and control over the outcome as you move through the game.

An excellent game that is the epitome of free exploration and open ended gameplay. The graphics are fantastic, what can beat looking over an epic city, from the heights of a mountain, in a forest... ON YOUR HORSE! The sheer scale can be daunting at first but you will soon be grateful for the chance to follow one more of the hundreds of quests. This is a great game and you wont be diappointed - this is pure escapism at its jaw dropping, addictive best!

This is an excellent game. Not wanting to spoil to much, you have to play it until you get out of the dungeon at the beginning of the game before you start to really see how good it is. I did find that part a bit tedious but once outside you'll find this game truly amazing. I've now been playing for over 160 hours and still have masses of the map I havn't been to yet

cabbage cabbage from UK [Highly rated reviewer] , 21/05/2008

this game is amazing - it is fairly basic in the concept of graphics and realism bit it makes up for those factors by having one of the best story lines and you will never have nothing to do - the story line is long and even when you do become champion of croydill you still have to complete the mages guild, thieves guild and fighters guild which will also take some time to master - if you do all of this then you can download the shivering isles expansion pack which has over 10 hours of extra gameplay! - everyone should rent or buy this game and will be very pleased with your purchase.

Katie Strong from a mountain top in Britain , 29/12/2006

This game has such depth and beauty, sometimes I cry. I also have book of poems insipired by my life in the Oblivion game, each written from a quill of angel hair.

I'm no elder scrolls fan-girl, but this game redefined the RPG for me. The bar was originally set by BioWares fantastic KOTOR, but then I played this. Never has I seen such a detailed world with the freedom to do so much.

With the fact that there is so much downloadable content that adds to the richness of the playing experience makes this the best game ever for the 360.

If you have no life, get this immediately. If you already have a life, kiss that goodbye and get this immediately.

Welcome to Oblivion.

goonerdynamite from London , 14/09/2009

Oblivion is a game you must buy if you like adventure games. There are many hours of gameplay. The world that oblivion is set is huge, I swear its the biggest in videogame history, bigger than that of gta 4. From the main quest to side quests to just free roaming I enjoyed every part every aspect of this game. It is unmissable and the only game I am still playing after two years. The voice acting however can get repetitive but with great visuals excellent eerie music to a brilliant storyline this game will not disappoint. The game has won many awards in the videogame industry and after a few minutes of gameplay it's easy to understand why. On a par with zelda the ocarina of time and the impact that game had on the rpg genre. RENT OR BUY?.....................BUY!!!!!

DeGrim from London , 30/03/2009

This game was one of the first games I got, 2 years ago, and I still play it on occasions. There is SO much variation that you can do, the gameplay is Amazing, the combat system is slighty tactical free, as it can consist of block-strike-block-strike... You can attack from afar, and ammunition is common to find, and there are some VERY beneficial glitches. This game is one of my all time favorites, and I would recommend it whole-heartedly!

Rated - 5 starsBuy it!

A customer from Liverpool , 17/01/2009

This game is fantastic. However, it takes a little while to get into it, so some people may think it is awful in the first 5 mins. There are hundreds of side quests, a ridiculously huge world that you can explore, finding new caves full of bandits, or lost ruins full of treasure. You can choose to be anything from a monk to a bard to an assassin, and there are different quest paths for each type of class (stealth, magic or strength). There are four guilds that you can join, all of them with a brilliant and well written story. You can really do just about anything you want, from picking locks and breaking into peoples houses to rob them blind, to designing your own spells to unleash hell upon the hundreds of different enemies you will meet along the huge main quest. Oblivion is a fantastic game, and anyone who says otherwise is an idiot.

this is one of the best RPG'S i have ever played, it just takes some time to get into. the main quest line is a bit short but there are loads of side quests to find, there are lots of secret weapons and armour to find not to mention the DLC if you have internet or the gtame of the year edition. a superb game 5/5

I am a big fan of Fallout3 and a friend said to rent Oblivion, as it is made by the same people.

It is the same game really but set in a Medieval Fantasy World. It isn't as good as Fallout3 but it was made some time before so no compaints there.

A good game but not really worth bothering with if you have already played FO3.

if you got lots of spare time you want to kill, look no further, heres the game for you, just like fallout3 (obviously without the laser guns etc), plenty of quests and items to find and also an expansion pack available, this will keep you busy for hours, and its fairly cheap now, so a good time to invest

Rated - 4 starsAwesome...

A customer from London , 17/05/2009

Awesome game.....be forewarned that this game feels like it goes on for ages...the main story mustve taken me 12-13hours gameplay time to finish and thankfully (unlike Fallout 3) doesnt stop your game when your finished...i must admit...once youve played it for a while (past lvl20) the game gets rather boring because youll be walking around in the best of the best equipment and with my character battles are non-existent (see, draw bow, nock, pull back, release, dead). If you ever get bored with doing the main quest then simply explore...be a prat and hit the guards...go join a guild and work your way up to leader of the guild...bla bla bla...this game goes on forever...and ever....and ever....and just incase, for ever...and if you ever DO manage to finish up then go download Shivering Isles and the rest of the DLCs and start all over again. Epic game

If you love RPGs, then you'll love this game. It has everything a good RPG needs. A brilliant gripping storyline, and many AIs. Brilliant detail, (e.g. the grass individually moves), hundreds of hours of gaming, so much to explore, if you (like me) enjoy gaming to the full, I didn't get bored.

But if you hate long games maybe it's not for you. Otherwise its most definately worth a rent.

Dragon83uk from Birmingham [Highly rated reviewer] , 05/04/2009

If you like RPG's and you haven't played this one yet you need to ask yourself one question - WHY?!? This game is by far the daddy of all RPG's. Any Bethesda fans who remembers their last award winning game, Morrowind, will find this a welcome addition to their collection. Personally I felt that they have dealt really well with the very few problems that were in the original. The biggest problem with the first game was that levelling up took a long time and the fights tended to drag on as you wildly swung your weapon around trying to kill some basic creature. However in this one the levelling system seems to work a lot smoother as does the fighting systems. Just like the original, the story line is deep and involving and should keep the average gamer amused for hours. If your not sure you should at least try it.

Good gme, i can see where Fallout 3 gets all its ideas from as it is made by same company aswell,

I will be buying this game because you can pick it up for £10 from gamestation but out of this and Fallout 3 i would say Fallout 3 is a better game and alot better theme.

To simply put it you cannot enjoy this game without a little bit of intelligence and exsperience with RPG's. This game is a new release from the Elderscrolls but you don't have to had played the last games in the series to understand. I would rate this game 10/10 because the game play, camera angle and length of the game is all good (200+ average hours of game play.) Its very dungeons and dragons but if your looking for somthing more up to date I recomend Fallout 3. : )

Rated - 4 starsA true RPG

Ravenstien from Leeds , 02/03/2009

The Elder Scrolls series have always been at the forefront of the single-player RPG series. From the original Elder Scrolls: Area, to Daggerfall and Morrowind, they have all been steadily getting bigger and more immersive, and now Bethesda have gone one-up on themselves in terms of gameplay, immersion factor and detail with Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

As with all the other ES titles, the game takes place in Tamriel, and in Oblivion, you're confined to the central province of Cyrodiil. I'd originally thought that you could travel all over Tamriel and go into Hammerfell, Skyrim or back into Morrowind, but I was disappointed to find you hit an invisible wall whenever you get to the border, but this was countered by the massive size of Cyrodiil. If you thought Morrowind was big, Cyrodiil is one step further. The game world is huge, and if you were to run from the southern border to the north, it'd take you a good couple of hours.

You start off in a prison cell being taunted by some Dark Elf, and you get to pick your race, appearance, sex, even your star sign, all of which make a difference to your game. Different races have bonuses to skills and special spells, and your star sign can give you benefits that range from attribute increases, to making you able to kiss someone to death. Once you've finalised all these, a man in a robe appears along with some bodyguard and tells you he's dreamed about him, in the voice of Patrick Stuart. This starts off the main quest for you, which takes you through a load of dungeons, and when you've battled your way past crabs, goblins and rats, one of the aforementioned guards handily suggests what kind of class you should be. You can take his advice based upon what weapons you've used so far, or you can ignore him and use whatever class you want, or just create your own class which is always called an 'adventurer.' The range of skills is vast, and specialisation in different ones means your experience will always be different to another's. They range from the essential, like block or athletics, to the moderately pointless, like alchemy or unarmed combat.

The basic gameplay is pretty sound, interactions and combat are all intuitive, but the inventory screen is rather cluttered and fiddly with scrolling mapped to the RB/LB and RT/LT which gets rather confusing. The conversation mechanics aren't bad either, but these days they're a bit clunky compared to say, Mass Effect, and your character never says anything. As well as this, the persuasion mini-game is rather annoying, and could probably be worked out with a simple algorithm, and late game, you'll just be bribing people with your endless wealth.

The main story is standard fantasy stuff...evil god trying to end the world, blah blah blah, and it's down to you to close a bunch of daemon gates, you get the gist, but that's not where you'll be spending your time. There are five main questlines that you can embark on - the main one, the four guilds - fighters, mages, thieves and assassin's and the arena...which isn't really a quest, more just a buch of fighting to do. If the main questline was average, then the guilds are even less interesting, storywise, with the exception of the Assassin's Guild, which isn't bad. Each guild obvious specialises in different styles of combat, although the Thieves' guild doesn't really encourage combat, and instead uses the sub-par stealth mechanic and gives you a completely pointless magic item at the end of the final quest. To be honest, it doesn't really matter what class you are, you'll still get through the guild quests and arena fine, as the difficulty can be changed constantly. This also raises the issue that everyone in the game levels up as you level up, so if you're sticking with the same difficulty, that boss you can't quite defeat at your currently level will stay that powerful as you level up unless you turn the difficulty down, and this also means that enemy NPCs will have better loot the higher your level, so to start off with, bandits will be dropping a few gold pieces and a rusty dagger, but at level 20, they'll be wearing elven armour and dropping vast fortunes.

In addition to the main quest lines, there's hundreds of other quests that can be done for different rewards, which will keep you busy for hours on end. And by hours, I mean hours. The first time I played the game through as a Khajiit (a cat-man) archer, I spent 70 hours total doing quests, and that's using the in-game fast travel system, and got to level 17. During my second playthrough I played as a High Elf Mage, and managed to get to level 21 in about 26 hours, but that was probably because I knew where I was going and didn't bother with mini-quests, however I was physically walking everywhere casting spells on myself to level up faster, power game that I am.

The graphics in the game are very, very good. I remember when screenshots of the game first came out, and for me it marked the starting point of 'next-gen' graphics. Now, 3 years later, they're starting to look simply 'this generation' so if you've played the likes of Halo 3 or Gears of War, they won't bowl you over. The environments look very good, if rather samey. Take one look around when you first get out of the dungeons, and you'll be seeing the same landscape everywhere, except for a few mountains. The cities are also pretty, but are massively undersized. The imperial capital is meant to be the Tamriel equivalent of Minas Tirith or Mal Zeth (e-points to anyone who can tell me where the 2nd place is from), but in the whole city there's about 20 shops, and about 25 people, which lessens the scale really. Also, children seem to be rather absent from the world, and you'll encounter about 2 during your time in Cyrodiil.

The sound isn't bad, but could be better. You'll be bored of the music after about an hour, and the voice acting, while soild, is done by about the same 3 people for everyone, with varied accents, so sometimes you'll find two people conversing with each other in the same voice, all the while standing stock-still, and repeating the same hand movement over and over.

As achievements go, it's probably the easiest list I've found, next to Fight Night 3, as all of them are gained by going through the 5 quest lines, so if you're willing to put in the time for it, this will be an easy 1000/1000

Overall, as a gaming experience, this is one for the serious RPG player. The detail and sheer expansiveness of the game I think will put some casual gamers off when they just want in-your-face gameplay, but for RPG fans, it is a must. One caveat, however, if you are an RPG fan, get either Oblivion, or Fallout 3 depending on your fantasy/sci-fi preference, as they're exactly the same game, except one has magic and the other has guns.

Pros: Detailed gameplay and levelling system, massive game area, endless customisation, lots to keep you busy, looks very good

Cons: Sheer depth could be offputting to some players, story is meh, voice acting is parochial, can be very slow to start with.

I played the game for around 5 hours and thoroughly enjoyed it. If your a fan of this genre i would suggest you buy it, try and avoid renting it as it will take up a lot of time. its a massive rpg free roaming world at if played completely would take about 100 hours to complete (including secondary missions). The best thing about buying this title now is that the game comes with the shivering aisles add on. Earlier this year the add on was £20 to buy seperately, now you get the main game and the add on for around £30 if you shop around. Its a bargain trust me.

i bought this game based on reviews and because i loved final fantasy games and thought the rpg side of this would appeal to me.

I can understand why some people enjoy this game however i thought it was overated boring and a waste of money. I like a bit more action in a game and found the graphics pretty dull in comparison to other games.

I gave the game 3 hrs to entise me into keeping it but i kept dying and was to be honest bored plus those three hours i am never getting back.

In conclusion you will either love this game or hate it so just buy call of duty 4 which everyone loves and throw the rest of your games collection in the bin because they will all become obsolete

Jack4Ianto from Maryport , 02/06/2008

Morrowind was one of the best games on the Xbox and PC and Bethseda have once again outdone themselves with Oblivion. The sheer scale of the game is something that has to be experienced to be believed. Yes there are little flaws like it's a tad too restrictive as there are certain times it would be nice to have a choice to do a story differently but this is a small fly in the vast ointment that is Oblivion. Try it, you'll love it.

Rated - 4 starsDungeons, YAY

A customer from York , 05/01/2008

Well well

Oblivion is mixed bag indeed...

It's very fun, takes up ALOT of my time and is so very addictive, Why?

It's so many options and methods of playing, What will you be? Imperial Knight? Dunmer Mage? Argonian thief? Altmer assassin? the list is quite long

The amount of different questlines is more than enough to keep you busy, plus the insane amount of side missions...and here we run into our first three flaws

1. Unused potential?

Cyrodiil is big, very big....with mountains and forrests, fields, vast cities

However Bethesda seem to base at least 60-70% of all missions in caves and/or dungeons.....This is annoying....

2. Wait, thats me!

Various of the different quest lines interact with eachother every so often, this would be good if it works...however it doesn't, in one thieves guild quest, you have to steal something from the Arch-mage of the mages guild...But wait? if you complete the mages guild first....Arn't you the arch mage? Sooo....i'm stealing from myself now? stuff like this occurs often

3. Slightly unconvincing NPC's

The Voice acting in places is great (Luciean Lachance and Sheogoroth) however in others its really bad (several people in town all having the same voice). The most annoying part, is that the good voice acting is slightly ruined by there charactars doing nothing while talking, When Sheogoroth starts manically sceaming at you his face barley changes and he doesn't move at all, then he changes into a silky villianous tone....again his face remains the same and he doesn't move...Oblivion would have benefited from Cutscenes in diologe...or at least more convincing animation (Ala Half-life 2)

The several different story lines are engaging though inviting emotional investment in many characters, unfortunatley one of the less appealing story is actually the main quest line, the ending itself is rather dissapointing, setting it up alot, even the mission itself set up a bit of expectation, but lets it down and feels quite cheap.

With the expansions (Shivering Isles, Knights of Nine) this game is probably one of the longest i've ever played

And its flaws are so outweighed by the fun and enjoyable gameplay that they shouldn't cause anyone to doubt it...

There's nothing i can say about this game that hasn't been saidin every other review. Once the lag problems were addressed by Bethesda via a live update a few weeks after release, there is nothing negative i can say about this game. It is amazingly vast, and even saying that i have played it through 4 times and am currently playing through a 5th.

If you haven't played the game for yourself you will have no way of telling from any review you read how good it is, just do yourself a favour and rent the game, but be prepared to lose days as you cannot put this game down.

Great looking game, and is huge. I rented the title to get the feel of it, and it took me a while to just get out of the initial first phase into the big open world. The game brings a different edge to games like Fable, which until now was my only RPG exposure on any xbox console. I will look into getting this game for myself to explore the depths at my leisure. There is now a Game of the Year edition for Oblivion in a similar manner that they did with Elder Scrolls 3. That might be worth the investment, purely for the amount of hours play.

Lisa from Uk , 31/08/2007

I bought this game about 2 weeks ago, I thought it looked good, but it was so much better than I even thought it would be.

At first I thought yeah this is great but I bet it's a game you get bored of in a few days, no chance I actually went two days without sleep glued to this thing and I've never been that addicted to a game before.

There is just so much to do, the graphics are awesome, the game is well wriiten and you can have 20 different quests to do at one time and you simply pick which one you want do first. Thats the beauty of this game, you do whatever you want you, in control at all times and you never run out of things to do.

Rated - 5 starsExcellent!!!

A customer from Redditch , 27/06/2007

If you like RPGs or 'Dungeons and Dragons' type games, then look no further.

The graphics are outstanding (even on a 'normal' TV), and the animation and sound are also very atmospheric. But it's the sheer size of the game that is so impressive. There is a whole county to explore, either on foot or horseback, and while the main section of the game will only occupy for a couple of days, you could easily lose several months of your life trying to finish the rest!

You can do almost anything, buy houses, trading, hunting, thievery, assassinations, it really is endless, and there is also a lot of downloadable extra content available on XBox Live.

However, this is not a game for the casual gamer, and requires a lot more thinking than your average XBox action game. Unless you have some serious hours to commit to your gaming, you had probably best avoid.

Rated - 5 starsThe never ending story?

Matt Shewbridge from Cheshire, England , 16/12/2006

The chances are you already know something about this legendary game. You know Patrick Stewart and Sean Bean have lent their voices to its script; you know that it slashes away at the distinction between PC and console RPG's like a recently sharpened longsword; but do you know that Oblivion is solely responsible for a 32.4% increase in Britain's divorce rate? OK, the statistic is made up, but the truth is this: enter Oblivion, and ages will pass before you emerge. There are seemingly endless possibilities. The plot progression twists and turns according to your every move and decision, your character develops precisely how you want, yet never without challenge, and the ending is, well I have no idea what the ending is; I suspect I'm not even half way. That's mainly because my character really happens to enjoy picking flowers, It keeps him in touch with his roots. Your character on the other hand, may hate horticulture, that's OK; it's just one of a plethora of hobbies and occupations that help him get through his wonderful, crazy life in Cyrodiil.

Graphics are not usually very important to me, but the visual wonder of Oblivion just makes everything seem, despite the fantasy setting, so real. The beauty is nothing short of astounding. and you will find youself wandering oround, exploring just for the sheer pleasure of it, taking on quests here and there, whenever they take your fancy.

This element of player-controlled exploration is the game's true, brilliance: the main quest is always just one option in a world where so many others exist. Progress along it as you wish (and you will, it's as gripping as the trashiest novels), but step out of it and do something completely different whenever the desire takes you. You will feel that the Oblivion you play is so different to that which others play. It will feel personal and unique, which ultimately is what will make playing the game such a joy, and that divorce a little easier to cope with.

Elder Scrolls Oblivion is a exelent game, it's uniqe enviroments, monsters and quests give over 36 yes 36 hours of gameplay.

The game starts off with you being a prisoner in an imperial prison were you can customize your characters looks and species. In oblivion you can choose over 5 factions to choose from and they all have unique quest lines which can reward you with enchanted weapons and amour and all in the first person.

This game will keep you hooked for hours on end and is deffinetly a play even if you dont like those sort of games.

This is a great game and a must have for XBOX360 owners. Rent it then, buy it, but watch out it can take over your life. I feel the urge to pick flowers whenever I pass them. I have been playing this game for a few months now and I have only completed 2 stages of the main quest, there is so much to do, so you get caught up in other things, like trying to increase your alchemy skills, or becoming top dog at the arena (who's the daddy now). The story lines are good as well, just watch out you don't become a vampire it takes a long time to get a cure. The game is further enhanced on the XBOX marketplace with further dloads to increase the to do in the game. Enjoy.

Mike from London, United Kingdom , 04/11/2006

The best RPG I've played on XBOX - better than KTOR, KTOR II or Fable and I'm a MASSIVE Star Wars fan. Took me 105 hours of my life to complete the main quest, some side quests and the Madges quest and a good old explore arround and there is still masses of game play left in it. The scale is awsome.

Rated - 5 starsGreat for RPG'ers and graphics addicts.

stuart weir from Chatham, England , 03/11/2006

This is the sort of game worth playing just so you can sit in awe at the gob smacking graphical power it has to offer. Obviously if you love RPG games its a bonus. Raid caves and dungeons and hack n slash away at fantasy creatures. All the stuff the previous Elder scrolls game had is here... improved and better looking.

If you like to just plug your machine in and play then this isn't the game for you. I found it rather long winded and hard to get into

I played it for well over 50 hours and it was fun from start to finish. Probably the best Xbox360 game in my collection. You'd be mad not to go out and buy this after renting!

I bought my 360 just for this game (my PC couldn't handle it!), and I don't regret it at all. Oblivion is immense, and there is SO much to do. My play time is 30 hours already, and I've barely started. You can be whatever sort of character you want to be... a heroic warrior, a murderer, a sneaky thief, powerful mage, you choose. Join guilds and work your way up the ranks, or play the main quest, or just raid the hundreds of ruins scattered across the world.

I've never really bothered playing RPG's in the past, but Oblivion is easily one of the best games I've ever played.

Rated - 5 starsMust have!!

A customer from London , 30/04/2006

This game is amazing. The only word for it. It is practically its own country. Create your character and explore the wilderness or just have some fun in town. The possiblities are endless. If you remotely like RPGs then this is a must have!!!!

Rated - 5 starsThe 1st truly next generation game

A customer from London , 10/04/2006

Up until now a lot of PC games and all the Xbox 360 games have had next generation graphics, but without any truly new gameplay and content.

Up until Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. This game is mind-blowing. I gave PGR3 5 stars for being the best racer, but this game deserves 6 or 7 stars on that scale. If you have an XBox 360, this game is simply a must-buy.

The sheer scale of the map and the number of variables in the gameplay means that there is an infinite number of different ways of completing the single player missions.

This includes: the choice of 10 different races each with different attributes and characteristics; an absurdly large map with hundreds of smaller side maps and missions; god knows how many hundreds of weapons, potions, armour and spells can be fashioned and collected.

On top of this there is the character face creator, which lets you adjust your characters appearance with extreme precision. There are at least 10 different sliding variables just for the nose, which allows you to make your character look identical to you - frighteningly good.

All in all - simply the best game to date. Welcome to the true next generation of games.

Rated - 4 starsSimply the best

A customer from scotland , 05/04/2006

This has to be the best game available for the 360 at present, The graphics are amazing good physics great storyline and even better is the longevity, this game will last well over 200 hours if you do all the optional stuff as well, hell i've only done a small part of the game and am sitting at about 50 hours played and thats from mostly being a sneaky little thief and general exploring.

As for the size of the map think at least double San Andreas but thank goodness you can fast travel to previously visited places. This should be a 5 star game but sadly it's not because Bethesda opted to Horse armour and another 2 downloads on the marketplace for 200 points each(about £1.70)one of which opens the door in the mages guild in imperial tower, i mean come on this content was finished and now on top of £40 for the game they want another £5.10 from us i know it's not that much but it's the principle and so it loses a star for publisher greed

Rated - 5 starsOblivion

A customer from Manchester, England , 03/04/2006

One of the most in depth games ever released. The environment is massive, the pre-programmed quests are nearly limitless, how you solve a problem IS limitless and no matter what genre of game you like, this has it in there. Problem solving, sneaking/assasination, battle magic, roaming around, increasing character strength, slash and bash. I could just put random words in and you would still be able to do it!!

Character creation means you can be whatever you want. The more you play, the more powerful your character becomes as do the enemy. However, the more powerful the enemy, the better the items you can rob off them (by killing them, buying the item, stealing it or pick pocketing it)

Ok. ok. The frame rate does drop outside sometimes (though the computer builds every tree individually, no more sprites!), the draw distance isnt amazing as such (around 100ft) and there are regular loads outside. The game merely pauses for a second while the new content loads though, so it isnt game destroying.

The only other small moan would be that battles could be won by just button bashing, however, you will loose alot of health (it is suprising how quickly big creatures move!)

Rent this game. If you like it after an hour or 2, buy it. Will save you money in the long run, as you will keep it until it is prised from your sweaty grasp.

Rated - 4 starsGreat game shame bout the framerate

mark preston from Leeds , 29/03/2006

This game is badly letdown sometimes by low framerate and has to load quite often when outside, shame it's a great game with nice graphics but feels like it was developed for a pc and rushed onto 360.Still worth a look if it doesn't bother you though.

Rated - 5 starsAddictive role playing master

Sammy123 from London , 21/06/2008

Be prepared to give up many hours of your life playing through the many, many different aspects of gameplay this master piece has to offer. The various elements in the gameplay at times make it even seem like several lesser games joined together; there is really that much to do. I cannot recommend it enough!

Rated - 4 starsGood

Alan Simmonds from Taplow, England , 30/11/2006

I own this game, and whilst I agree with most people that it is good, it also has its faults. Faults which annoy me significantly.

I think the oblivion planes drag on a bit too much and there is a very limited number of monsters that attack you, which is a bit disappointing. Also, the NPC's are ungrateful and it makes you want to stab them. Another annoying fact is that even when you upgrade your spells, the visuals are the same. It'd be far better if when you fired a more advanced destruction spell it actually looked better, but no such luck.

Graphics are great, gameplay is good, but exhaustive and overall I found the game quite long winded. Despite my moaning, you should try this game out if you own a 360, it has its faults, but it is worth playing.

Rated - 3 starsNot for everyone

David Wright from London, England. , 07/05/2006

Personally this game bored me, amazing graphics, amazing sound, but the game itself was boring. If you're into online games and playing with your friends this definatly isnt for you, and if you're into Final Fantasy style RPG's this isnt for you either.

I would have to say rent it for the weekend and see what you think yourself... but beware it also demands a large amount of play time.

Mike Haigh from Huddersfield england , 01/09/2006

why everybody likes this game i think (and my friensd agree) that this game is absolute crap it is soooooo boring you cant even do a combo for crist's sake and its the same over and again and there is no point in the 3rd person view if you want a game with a good 1st and 3rd person action/adventure you want:Oddworld Strangers Wrath Now thats a good game even if you hadent played the previous 3 because it is not linked with them yet...
