This game is going to be nothing special. Judging from the disaster that was San Andreas, as well as Liberty and Vice City Stories, this is going to be another game that everyone hypes up before it's out and then complains when they realise it's awful. GTA has gone downhill since Vice City.
GMG from LONDON [Highly rated reviewer] , 17/04/2008
No matter what this game is going to be crazy. People be like' you can't write a review without playing it, No i can't. But i can feel it!!!!!!

God how repetative and boring did this game go!!!After 1 hour of gaming i wanted to return the discGlad i did not buy it and the online multi player is awfulwe expect more from rockstar and they have not delivered
matlikethecarpet from Falkirk [Highly rated reviewer] , 12/05/2008
I rushed out and bought this the first day it came out, and have since completed GTA4 100%, all missions, jumps, strangers, birds etc etc and feel I need to say a few things after reading all these completely useless 'reviews' that came out weeks before the game did, saying 'this will rock, this is going to be perfect' etc etc. It rocks alright but it ain't perfect that's for damn sure, it feels like an unfinished product and is very glitchy, which isn't really acceptable when you remember that it was postponed for seven months so the company could fix all these glitches! Anyway that aside GTA4's pretty cool, the graphics hold up well for the most part, the driving is a bit different than the last games but works out better once you get used to it although the motorbikes aren't much fun anymore, the city itself is well done, lots of hidden areas and things to keep you busy for weeks, and loads of talkative people to run over which never really gets old, as the people react pretty much the way they would in real life if you hit them at high speed with a Ferrari, short of ripping in two. The on-foot action still needs a bit of work, as it feels quite clunky at times, although the ability to hide behind things and stake out your enemies, Metal Gear Solid style is a welcome addition. As for the story, the missions, they're really fun once you get past the first 30 or so, some of the characters are pretty weak though, not that it matters too much I guess. Several decisions to be made in the game also which will affect how the rest of the game plays out. Driving around picking up friends and taking them bowling, drinking etc is tedious and boring, but has to be done if you want a few bonus things. Hunting for all the hidden things is damn good fun and finding all the pigeons will have you pulling your hair out! Anyway I'm running out of space but to summarise, GTA 4 kicks ass, but not as much as San Andreas does. GTA 4 is a hell of a lot easier to finish, it is glitchy but still good fun, it does't deserve all the 10/10's it's been getting, and a quick google search will reveal that Rockstar Games bribed alot of the more influential review sites into giving it overly high scores. Online is good fun but can be brutal if you're new to GTA! Be warned! 4/5, hopefully the next GTA game will be a big improvement over this one, although for 39 quid it's a damn good deal.
Lost from Salisbury [Highly rated reviewer] , 07/05/2008
I have been playing this game since it was released, and i can say it is brilliant. At long last some of the niggely bugs within the GTA series have been solved!Rockstar Games have faithfully recreated in part, New York City, under pseudonym of 'Liberty City'. Unlike their past three games (being GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas) the city itself plays as much of an important role as the main storyline character Niko Bellic. As you wander around Algonquin's (Manhattan) Star Junction, which is an amazing copy of Times Square, you can almost feel the buzz of the city as if it where alive. Now for the bad points. The missions, which so far (im only 30% through) the story is good and much easier to follow that previous titles, are pretty much the same kind of activities your employer has made you do time and time before, IE follow someone, while keeping your distance, when the arrive at the location, kill them. For example. While the missions maybe a bit stale, they still keep me hooked and do play well within the realm that you are playing within. The Graphics are absolutely stunning, i have not seen anything within a game look so good, occasionally though the 360 gets a 'pop up' problem, in which certain objects come into more clarity as they load, but it doesn't not hamper the game play or both me really. The sounds of the game are just as impressive than graphics, now when crash or bump your car into another, you can hear the metal grinding and crumpling and you can hear the glass shattering out of the back car window. The detail of the game is amazing, its all those subtle details that you don't really notice until you look for them that makes this game special. This is a definite by for anyone (over 18 mind you) who has a current gen console (360/PS3). The story grabs you and never lets go. if i had to say something about this game in one word it would be 'Amazing'.

Bloody good! You need this!
quondam from Bromley [Highly rated reviewer] , 06/05/2008
I have played every single GTA since it was first released on the PC all that long time ago, the hype for this game was right as this is one amazing game, for the first time it appears on the X-box and it has done it proud, this is one fine game with so many options of game play path as with previous GTA's before it, it's the nice touches which make a good game and there are plenty here, from smashing a car window to hot wiring it, to the ultimate death and your last vision before you snuff it (you will know what I mean when you play the game). Two things stand out this year on this new release which have changed from previous GTA.1. The car handling will seem odd at first but it seems the most realistic handling of anygame and the damage to the cars is awasome, the car handling is very simular to Burnout paridise and feels like a 70's cop show.2. GTA is online this time and there are so many options available, cops vs. robbers and turf war are my favourites, the loading times can suck abit but it's worth it if you get a good room to play in, nothing like being able to drive and your team mates jump in your car as you race for the enemy and you feel responsible for them if they get killed.Overall, single player is awasome, online is awasome, and it's not really kids playing this game at the moment but it will only be a matter of time before they get it i'm sure.wicked game and hours and hours of fun.
Spoonychief from Liss [Highly rated reviewer] , 18/07/2008
I found this game boring, with difficult game play and a really dull story line. There is nothing new here and for all the hype this game had I was expecting something a little different and exciting.A few months ago I completed Saints Row which had a faster pace for game play and the game was generally more enjoyable and has the same style game play.
Biffa from Downham Market.England [Highly rated reviewer] , 30/04/2008
Played it for a day, then decided to get my own copy. You can get the scale of the game after playing for only a short time...and its massive.Simply Fantastic,if a bit slow to start..
TheDjMission from Taunton [Highly rated reviewer] , 24/11/2008
I had always been a fan of the GTA titles, however this slightly let me down. I was hoping for something 'more'.The missions seem to take forever and are very repetive, for the first 4 or so your just driving yourself or other people around.I also hoped that the game would allow you to be a bit more free roaming i.e. walk into any building, even if they are all the same i.e. other peoples apartments. It doesnt and this was a bit of a let down as I like to explore as well as play.I didnt really get into the story line either - the best GTA for a story line is deffinetly still Vice City.Overall I give it a nice average 3 Stars. Nothing overally impressive but worth the rent just to say you've played it.
PrincessSix from Mansfield [Highly rated reviewer] , 17/07/2008
My Husband tells me not as enjoyable as San Andreas, which might be a good thing, because I saw very little of him during the time it took him to complete that....thankfully he lost interest with this one.
damon from Berwick-upon-Tweed [Highly rated reviewer] , 03/05/2008
OMG what can i say this is the best game i have played since GOW last year... the graphics are beutiful... they have put every last bit of detail into this game... the story line is unbelievable (so far)... god i dont know what to say i am lost for words... BUY THIS GAME I YOU CAN!!!! but beware your social life may just go out the window but its worth it!

xray from London (tottenham) [Highly rated reviewer] , 22/09/2008
I think this game has great graphic but the story lacked harshly, compared to the other GTAs this one was the worst, all the creaters did was beef up the graphics. online is great though
A customer from Skelmersdale , 25/07/2008
I dont know what the haters are complaining about, this game has lived up to the hype, as for the guy who said that changing clothes, taking people out is boring, it brings realise to the game making you feel more involved, the graphics for this type of game are great, car damage and handling are better than ever and more accurate, the water gaphics are just...WOW and the the pedestrians walking around all look different and are always doing something, plus so much more. The story line is great as well, works good in this game, and it is not a slow paced game. so all in all this game is great and anyone who is even slightly interested in this game should well buy or rent this game as it is one of the greats out there
A customer from Bridgwater , 21/07/2008
Really disappointed with this game - considering all the hype surrounded by it! I was never really that much of a fan of previous GTA games so thought I'd try a rental & all the hype suggested it would be well worth it. After nearly two hours of play I couldn't wait to get this game back in the return envelope! I found it dull, boring & generally not very interesting! However, it's what floats your boat! So if you liked previous GTA titles you'll love this -if like me you've never enjoyed GTA then don't bother with this game.
ChrisBarraclough from London [Highly rated reviewer] , 14/05/2008
Writing this review seems almost pointless, as 99% of the population will have made their minds up about this game about four years ago when it was still just a sperm in the creative juices of the Rockstar team. Either you love GTA and have already bought it and played it with every minute of spare time you have, locked away with the curtains drawn while people with 'real lives' frolic and play in the sun before it disappears for another eleven months. Or, you hate it, and make a disapproving tutting sound every time someone mentions the name, before launching into a tiresome lecture about how it's responsible for every BAD THING in the world since Jack The Ripper's days of puncturing prostitutes. But, for the 1% who are still on the fence for whatever reason, and are contemplating picking up or renting GTA 4 (or GTA IV as it's billed; what does it think it is, a Rocky film?), here's my words of advice. If you are put off by any of the following, do NOT check it out: swearing, fighting, reckless driving, murder, homophobia, xenophobia, sexism, sex, police brutality, drugs, bowling, manslaughter, suggestion of paedophilia, and the sight of a man smashing through his windscreen while on fire before smacking hard into the side of a building. If, however, you find most of the above hilarious, then pick it up. You won't be disappointed. All the humour from previous games is still in place, with some missions bordering on ludicrous, but the story has been vamped in a major way; no simple 'work your way up the crime chain' here. The twists and gradual reveal of main character Niko's background will have you hooked. The supporting cast is colourful and funny, and the bad guys evil enough to have you laughing with glee when you finally get to unload a shotgun in their faces. But, if renting, beware: it'll most likely take you 20-30 hours to complete, and the multiplayer is addictive enough to keep you coming back for more. After all, what's more fun than ploughing over you best mate in a dumptruck? For more reviews, see ChrisBarraclough dot co dot uk
Wardex from Cottingham , 21/07/2008
This to me is the same as any other GTA game. In my opinion the franchise hasn't been the same after GTA 3. Then they started to add too much into it like getting tatooes and stuff like that. In this one you get to change you clothes and take you friends on nights out, which i find really boring as you just drive them there and then drive them back. The storyline is good and well thought out but the cutscenes are not very interesting, infact i don't think i watched a whole you through. My assessment is, if you like San Adreas and Vice City then you will proberly like this one. if you didn't then go and get something else
stephenp0901 from Fleetwood , 30/06/2008
This game is crap all you can do after completing the game is shoot people, theres no tattoos, doin up cars and theres only 10 clothing items
Jasko from Birmingham [Highly rated reviewer] , 23/06/2008
I pre-ordered this title- so I recieved it the day it came out in the early morning. I was eager to see what all the fuss was about so I put it on almost straight after getting it out of the packaging. As it loads for the first time your greeted with an great introduction to the main character- Niko Belic, and a brief summary of his past and his plans for his future. Your first mission involves learning the basic controls for driving whilst the mission itself serves purpose to the story aswell. After playing the game for quite a while I achieved 100% in game completion- and this took many hours, and still I don't get bored after 100% in game completion due to the array of multiplayer modes via Xbox Live. This includes the likes of a deathmatch, cops and crooks and many more- I could play this title over and over and it never gets boring.I suggest you go out and BUY it now- value for money and a huge amount of activities to do- along with endless discovery of minor (and major) yet pleasing details, this will keep you busy and hooked for a long while. If your new to the Grand Theft Auto series I suggest you rent it first- but if not, what are you waiting for?!

i have had this game for 2 weeks and i am still amazed with the graphics, gameplay and storyline.I would reccomend this to anybody that likes GUNS + VIOLANCE:)If you do-not like violance do not try this game :)

If your into sandbox type games then nothing compares. This is the type of game that will quite literally take over your life.Looks great with a world that goes about its business so you actually feel part of it. I have played it for about a whole day and still have only completed 20 % of it. There is so much to do, mission based or just roaming and exploring.A must game for any next gen consol.
CJH from Dundee [Highly rated reviewer] , 03/08/2008
What do I think of GTA4... hmm. Well it is still relatively addictive..I haven't played a GTA since Vice City and I must admit.. VC was much more addictive. I feel this is because GTA4 limits while it expands its realism. For example, you are prompted.. regularly, to keep your in-game friends happy. Take them out to play Pool, bowling, go drinking etc etc. After doing this for the first day I had it.. I thought.. WHY?? Why am I doing this??I quickly started doing what GTA is meant for and starting mowing down pedestrians in a huge hummer. The police give chase, but it seemed I was going so fast they gave up immediately... Vice City police hounded you forever, and that was the enjoyment; seeing how long you lasted!Graphically, this game is very good, from rain to sun rays, even the subtle blur effect when you drive fast (not so much you are distracted, but enough to 'feel' it.. yet not realise quite how fast you are going). Sound is incredible too, tyre squeals and bone-crunching impacts have never sounded so good!I didn't get far in the story... the missions became really quite hard and the save points more distant, but I liked it. The lead character Niko is very human for once, I found myself relating to some of what he said and so the story was really quite compelling. For a GTA game, I was impressed.But.. in looking for flaws I took my beloved in-game girlfriend on one of my carnage sprees. I was a little shocked at how well she took the mass murder... even when I drove off a cliff and nose-first into the concrete below, she seemed more worried about the state of the car. I then drove off into the sea, a caption came up saying 'You scared Michelle'... before we both drowned. Understatement much?GTA has hit a turning point it seems, we will have to see were it goes from here.
A customer from London , 23/07/2008
I am puzzled by all the rave reviews for this game. It is slow, boring, very fiddley and hard to control and a massive let-down, particularly after all the hype. Saints Row is MUCH faster to play, more exciting and more interesting. I nearly died with boredom doing some of the missions. There is nothing new here at all. Saints Row and Crackdown are both much better games - stick with them and don't bother with GTA4 - it's just rubbish.
TudorVII from Farnborough [Highly rated reviewer] , 26/06/2008
Like millions of others, I got this game on the day of release, I've been a fan of the entire series and loved pretty much all of the games. I was expecting it to be very much like GTA3, mainly because of the island size and layout, and in reality that would be a very vague description of the game.Liberty City has been ripped apart and redesigned with a living, breathing, hustling and bustling enviroment. Although the graphics weren't quite as good as I'd expected, the scenes of the city are fantastic, especially when you're going into the gun dealer's store and there's a group of guys outside all smoking the weed. There are now more buildings than ever before you can go inside, or climb on top of, but even with that advantage, you still can't hide. The cops AI is much better in this game, so if you hide inside a building, they'll creep in with their guns pointing straight at you! And they have a much bigger presence in the game, it's hard to turn down a street without seeing one.Obviously, attention to detail isn't everything, but the game still has a pretty decent story, it felt a bit short to me, but that may be because I didn't do anything else when I played through. However, it's very slow to start, the first few missions make it seem that this is a second life type of game (if anyone else feels that, steal a car and mow down 30 odd pedestrians, it'll put you back on track).Multiplayer is ok, brilliant because you can switch between campaign and online gaming in about 30 seconds, but the gameplay is nothing special, but still good fun to pack a chopper with your mates and take to the skies.Overall I think this is a great game, but is getting very mixed reviews. If you've played GTA before, get it. If you haven't, rent it first and make up your own mind.
SWEET999 from London [Highly rated reviewer] , 09/06/2008
if you have time on your hands (eg no job no life) then this game a perfect in every way, looks good, sound good, all good. but its too long I had to give this back as it just too damn time consuming . give me call of duty 4 or gears of war any day. but damn does it look good
ChrisArmitage from Halifax, England [Highly rated reviewer] , 13/03/2009
I cannot believe how downhill the whole Grand Theft Auto franchise has gone these days, since Grand Theft Auto 3 (2001) the games have got worse. There were many parts of this game that annoyed me, for instance due to the great size of the map, you spend most of your time stealing and driving cars, yet the whole driving control system is badly set out and uncontrollable. Also I was disappointed with the whole visual quality of the game after all I'd heard, maybe this was better on the PS3?After the first few hours the game becomes repetitive and tedious, once you've done a few missions, had a go at getting a 6* rating and exploring the cheats, you'll find it hard to play on. I didn't dare attempt the online experience, so I can't comment on that.Bring back the simplicity and enjoyment of GTA3 or the ridiculous graphics of GTA:London anyday.

antrush from Guildford , 30/05/2008
the game as anticipated was as good as expected,if not better.the fist aspect that tha is just so enjoyable is the way the cars handle,it is great fun.the stuning graphics are a backdrop to to a realistic experience which is more the a sequel to gta3.its perfect.buy it.
jtc from Ware , 29/05/2008
i just wanted to say i played it for a hour round my friends house as it was raining i was dumbstruck at the graphics (e.g damage to cars, detail on buildings and car handling) and the online is great and it made me want it to rain more so if you're looking for a great gift look no further gta 4 is a five star game in my point of view i hope you agree
Sean145r from Salford, Manchester [Highly rated reviewer] , 20/05/2008
This game is too hyped up. Good game, enjoyable. Full of sex, violence, drugs and swearing as a GTA game should be. Disappointing that the game is so short. Kind of repetitive. Reminder of all of the other GTA games that came before this one. Boring at times. Also quite difficult at points but do-able. Overall 3 out of 5. Online keeps this game alive really but even that can get boring at times. Try and get some friends and do a 'Cluckin' Bell Hold-Up' which can be hilarious. Anyway definetly one to buy, if you have XBL that is.
A customer from manchester , 17/12/2008
It's no surprise that this game got 100% from most magazines and review sites. Apart from the repetitive storyline, this game really does make the player go wow, especially when you are flying over the city in a helicopter watching the sunset. The sound and visuals are truly stunning. As for the game play it's a little slow and can seem repetitive, however playing with a couple of mates on multiplayer 'freemode', can make the game more entertaining. My personal favourite hobby in the game to past the time is to take a chopper to the top of the getalife building and snipe random people from it.
A customer from Antrim , 13/11/2008
This game was rather disapointing compared to San Andreas, there was some good things added, like the mini games n stuff buts a lots was removed too, like the weight trainning and stuff, i found most of the mission's pretty easy with one or 2 little challenges but nowhere near as challanging as San Andreas. The dating is a little weak due to the fact that the cabaray shows an stuff are pretty silly, and you can buy a hot dog from a vender but if you free-roam to the bar for darts you cant buy beer? The policing is very lack lusting too, for example i knocked a guy over and drove over him in front of a cop and nothing was done but i passed a barrier at the airport and got a 5 star wanted level!Great graphic's but the new touches just arnt enough to replace those that have been removed, glad I rented it first! If you lookin for a game that has lots of action, better gameplay and better features then i advise Saints Row/Saints Row II Much better games, much more fun!
tonipepperoni from Airdrie , 14/10/2008
Just the same as the other GTA games but with way more detail. Could only play it for a few hours then got bored. Maybe it's just me.
A customer from UK , 14/05/2008
This game is great, however after you get past the 'Wow' factor with the graphics and extra game play things such as cover, and running up steps etc, then this GTA is just the same as any other GTA Game since GTA 3. This is how i felt personally about the game anyway. It was great for the first week or so, but then it began to lose it's appeal.
A customer from Lancs , 19/12/2009
Grand Theft Auto 4 - no film, book or other game has come close to telling such a complete, beautiful, violent, exciting or satirical tale of the 'American Dream' today. You actually like the characters. Niko is a great character - hard as nails without seeming like an arse, roman is a lovable git and dimitri is a twat just like he should be. Liberty city is gorgeous and look out for the mission 'Three Leaf Clover' because it is one of the best missions ever created, period, . Add in multi-player and its near perfect. In my opinion, the best game ever made.
josh234 from Blackpool , 20/11/2009

PUND1T from Oldham , 11/11/2009
Gta IV has to be in my opinion and most.one if not the best console game ever made. It eats at the core of your imagination when it comes to human form, behaviour realism.it just seem to always suprise no matter how far you are in the game. Infact you dont even have to play missions to enjoy the game.My only concern is its awfull car radio channels the music is hurrendous!and my only dissapointment was it crashes when i get to the third island so i didnt get to finish it. mind you that must be the amount of people who borrowed it!19.9/1098/100.defo worth buying or renting

GTA 4 is a good game overall, the graphics are amazing and much better than the ones before though the game play is not as good as San Andreas i don't think. San Andreas let you fly planes, trains, tractors and the map was bigger. To me i liked the idea of having gang controlled area's like in San Andreas though its not like that in GTA 4 i also liked driving in the country. You can fly helicopters in GTA 4, boats, cars, bikes and you can get the train and go on the underground which is cool plus get a taxi. Would be even better if you could walk around in the trains but never mind maybe thats something that could be done in the future. You can get many dates on the game and you get to take them out and stuff thats a good idea and just like in San Andreas you can swim. The multiplayer is amazing! playing that will get you hooked for hours trust me, you can play multiplayer with the whole map unlocked and with total freedom.I think the best thing about the game is the graphics and multiplayer but i still think they can do better! its a big step for sure, games are getting more and more real now and i would like them to make it as real as they can get it. Look forward to seeing the new GTA i think the creators are on the right path. This game is worth renting for sure.

CHIRUNO from Newton Aycliffe , 25/07/2009
Grand Theft Auto has got some good points, there's plenty of Online Action to have and having a cover enging in shootouts is definetly a must have. There's also a wide range of activites to do within the game and it keeps the variety flowing.Problems with the game is it feels so slow, each mission can only be accessed usually everytime the player recieves a phone call and then they must go to the start to begin the mission. Ofcourse phonecalls within the game tend to get annoying and stroll aay from the main storyline too much. The physics for vehicles just dosen't fit especially when you should be chasing someone at high speeds. Although they are very accurate and based to be more realistic, it seems to feel stupid during the rainy conditions. It's still worth a playthrough though, as lon as you have patience.
Splint07 from Portsmouth, England [Highly rated reviewer] , 16/07/2009
Grand Theft Auto IV was a game which everyone was looking forward to during the release. You play as a character which is from Slovakia, and they whole gameplay is more realistic compared to the previous versions of the GTA series. When you try this game, don't expect it to be fun and fast like the previous games. GTA IV puts you more into a real world, much better graphics, physics, and storyline is mostly of it is based around your cousin during the game. Cheats are limited in the game (using mobile) but adds much more fun to the game. Alot of bugs during the game, but it's definately a game you want to play when your looking to play a realistic game with abit of theft auto, killing spree and car smashing/blowing.3.5/5 stars. Fun but after few hours of playing, it's too realistic/slow to be enjoyable for hours.Online: Gameplay is much more fun, the fact you don't even get cops after you is the best feature, just kill whoever, cause destruction, have a mate or two with you, alot of bugs, which are actually fun to try and makes the game alot more enjoyable. TRY IT :)

After buying this game when it was released i thought i would give it another try., so i rented it.-The game has a brilliant realistic look to it, the weather, the roads, the detail on the buildings, the explosions, the cars, the weapons, the list goes on and on and on.-The story mode for this game, does keep you gripped to the game, but from time to time some of the missions do seem too appear quite similar to others which is a huge downfall.-The thing about this game that does it for me is the characters, you play as 'Niko Bellic' who is from Eastern Europe, Niko has a lot of background around him some of it is bad, and that is the reason he moved to LIberty City, to get a 'fresh start' well that was his plan anyway. So this game, does really let you know the character you play as aswell as others you will encounter throughout the game, which does make the game stand out from the others a lot.-The achievements are relatively hard to get on this game, so if you're thinking of building up the points, look somewhere else.-67% through the game played for over 30 hours, so it's not one you will complete quickly. But i'm enjoying it and that's what counts.Anyway, enough of my rambling on, rent this game, buy this game - you won't be dissapointed.

What a waste of time I starting playing this expecting some thing good with me being a huge gta fan remembering spending the summer playing the very first one on the pc for hours on end with out even denting the progress of the game. And spending most of the days round a mates trying to complete london etc well I lent this one of my nephew to be completely shocked by what the god damn sims if you want to go on dates a range play dates with your gangster friends and experience the worst driving ever then go ahead just don't say you wernt warned what ever happened to Grand THEFT AUTO its in the name for the love of christ what has happened to this once revolutionary franchise?

GTA IV Is as good solid game which builds upon an already very successful base of games. It improves on much from san andreas. The clever bits of the game have to be your contacts i.e call roman on your mobile and get a free cab to anywhere or call little jacob and get a selection of guns from the back of his car. Graphics and physics of the game have also been improved. The major downside is that the gamehas removed the unrealistic elements such as flying. I used to love zoomig across the city and launching missiles at people. You no longer have that wacky free element. Also there are no properys that you can buy. You get a bigger flat everytime you coplete a stage of the game but no money making ventures which is an element of the game that i loved from vice city onwards.Overall this game is great fun but it is too realistic and lacks those wacky ways of completing missions.
Amypoohs from Emsworth [Highly rated reviewer] , 01/06/2009
Was eagerly anticipating this game and had it on pre-order from the moment it was announced, had to put up with constant delays so they could make the game great. it looks exactly this Liberty is a great semi re-creation of NY. The game just doesn't feel like GTA, I miss jumping from a plane/helicopter and parachuting down. I miss escaping area 51 using a jet-pack. As a standalone game this is great but as a follow up to San Andreas this just doesn't cut-it, beware online you could be waiting 10-15mins for the host to start the game and there is a lot of abuse flying around. If you are a fan of the series play you will enjoy but remember to download San Andreas as a reminder of what a GTA game should be like.

CHeeSeNeRd from Stafford , 15/05/2009
This game is very, very good and would recommend it to any fan of GTA or a fan or games in general. The game just gets better and better and never becomes boring and you also get very interested in the storyline. The game is quite long compared to some games but is worht the 30 so hours of gameplay. The only drawback I found to this game was the online system. I that it a while to get into a game and when I was finally in a multiplayer game I didnt find it that special and think this aspect of GTA4 needs improving but the single player game is amazing.

FlipZ from Worcester Park , 01/04/2009
Good game as ever, not much difference and missed a lot of things from the previous titles.
cloudswift from Bangor , 01/04/2009
ProsIt has good graphics, the characters are funny and well rounded, there's hours of game play, there is a 'choice' aspect for certain missions that change how the main story developes.ConsThe driving system is sluggish, he runs at 45 degree angles when turning corners, the missions are similar and repetitive, there are too many side-missions that sidetrack and holdup the main story (darts, pool, bowling etc)It's definitely worth a rent, but you'll have to thumb through it for 10-20 hours to get to the good story lines.
Dragon83uk from Birmingham [Highly rated reviewer] , 28/03/2009
GTA 4 is a welcome addition to the amazing rockstar series. By far one of my favourite editions so far with very few downfalls. Anybody who has followed the GTA games thus far will instantly be able to get into the game and will easily be able get used to the controls. Graphically it's a million worlds away from San Andreas although it is a much smaller map. The vehicle controls are quite realistic with a lot less of the blockiness of earlier games. Anyone who enjoyed the detailed character creation in S.A. may be disappointed to hear that it's all but gone in this game, but personally it didn't do to much harm to what is essentially a brilliant game.
Tigerhuds from Hartlepool [Highly rated reviewer] , 20/03/2009
GTA 4 is boring. This is the 1st GTA game that have not completed, as I just got sooo bored by it.Mission are similar and repetitive... steal this car, kill this guy, kill these guys and repeat. Some missions you will drive across the entire city, get killed, then restart and drive all the way across the city... its about time they put in some mission checkpoints which start you at the mission.Great city scape, stunning graphics, good characters and nice driving. But San Andreas remains the best game to date.
Nayf from Manchester , 20/03/2009
Recently, I've started to loose interest in games. I used to spend hours getting completely lost in games. and, despite the brilliant graphics my Xbox 360 posses, since it's release, there have only been a handful of games I've not been able to stop playing. This is one of them.I've loved all the GTA's from GTA London to San Andreas. This is the best one I've played. One thing I hated about all the games prior to this one, was the 3rd person shooting. It was so glitchy and annoying. They've come up with a whole new system in this game that makes it the best 3rd person shooter ever made in my opinion. The graphics are stunning. The digital acting is right up there with the best in games. The story-line is basic, but that's what makes it so good. You actually care what happens to the characters in the game. It's addictive, you can play it again and again.Very few titles these days are actually worth their given price tag. This game is worth every penny and more.
Adam859 from Northampton , 05/03/2009
The game in itself is great, the time and effort of developers is really showing, with great graphics a realistic ragdoll system, and the whole world seems to be moving. The game does everything it set out to do, It set out to make you feel as though your living life. GTA are slowly letting the player do EVERYTHING you could in real life on 1 controller, Very good game some good missions that you can never come to suspect and the online is great.Problem is if you like to play a game just for pure killing like the older GTA's dont excpect to be doing much, Everything is so realistic it ruins the replay value, I dont know about everyone else but i loved going on police chases and trying to drive as fast as i could to get away, On here a killing spree is difficult, Driving can get annoying if you just want to drive like a lunatic (cars start slow but pick up speed, hit 1 thing and you have had it!) And if you liked using motorbikes this game really does have some good physics for bikes, But again to real for my likingSo, Very good game, Hit its targets but i like my games to stay as games, Its to realistic, i rated it high as this was a personal prefrence and not the actual game, Very good!4/5 stars

Played other GTAs but there was something not right with this one, could be the story, the missions or it was hyped to much. Never finished the game, didn't play online too since I got it for the story.
A customer from Wirral , 04/03/2009
I havent come on here to point out all the little things that rockstar removed, messed up, or improved. People need to look at this game and remember that it is the first GTA game to be using the RAGE engine( Rockstar Advanced Game Engine). The Game plays well, yes as have been mentioned it can feel a little clunky at times, but play this for a while and go back and play GTA III, VC or SA. It will feel just as weird.I can see RS using this engine for maybe two or three more GTA games, and just like what they did with VC and SA things will improve.Look at when EA released FIFA 07 for 360, It was using a brand new engine, the game played alot better but there wasnt as much content( teams ect) Next year, everythings back as is should be. Just Give RS a little time and the next installment in one of the most legendary gaming series will KICK A##
A customer from UK , 03/03/2009
If you enjoyed the previous games in the series, you will love this one! Yes its the same old GTA3 onward gameplay, but is that a bad thing? I mean thats what makes them huge hits, I'm not sure why people complain that theres 'nothing new', you people seem to be looking for a totally different game whenever a new GTA comes out. Anyway there *are* new elements to the game as with every new GTA game, just not very big additions to how the game plays. My only gripe with GTA IV is having to manage your relationships with the friends you meet throughout the game, having to regularly hang out with them gets a bit annoying but is necessary for some achievements and will unlock the ability to use their services. In my oppinion and it would seem the majority of people agree; GTA gets better with every major addition to the series. If you wasn't a fan of the previous GTA games, then you probably wont enjoy this or any future GTA. I doubt rockstar will ever change the game to the extent some people hope for, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.When almost every magazine and website review a game and give it 10 out of 10 or an A or 5 stars; you know the people who say things like 'utter crap, nothing new, crap graphics, boring' are morons.

I really enjoyed playing GTA Vice city so was anxious to play this, and was pleasantly surprised with the little extras like the added mobile phone feature and going on dates or hanging out with 'mates'.But after a few missions it gets tedious, and the lack of being able to spend the well earned money we earn apart from blowing it on taxis, makes the missions unexciting and having the 'i can't really be bothered' feel to the game.Playing online isn't all whats cracked up to be,if your like me and rubbish at the game anyway at times..then multiplayer is not for you! too many people are blooming good!! LOLAll in all, brilliant rental for a week or so but rubbish to buy!

Picture the scene; You're excited. You've just heard that a new game from a series you love is about to be released. So, of course, you immediately pre-order it.You wait tentatively for it to arrive. You spend endless hours playing it when it does. You complete it faster than all of your mates (3 days to be exact) and they haven't even got it yet. You play online with your mates who finally get it, and jump out of speeding helicopters. You hear that there may be some DLC coming out. You........wait. You go through the story again to get a few achievements you didn't get first time round, but realise that you can't be bothered because you've got better things to do. So. What happens after that? Nothing. You sell it, only to find that a month after selling it, the new DLC is announced. If you hadn't already guessed, that story is me. So i'm kinda on the bench. At first, i loved it, could not get enough. But after a while, it was boring, repetitive. It hasn't stayed true to the more arcadey-ness of the original GTA's, specifically 1-3; what happened to Kill Frenzys?! And the random pill that slowed everything down, which was completely pointless?! Who knows. Its a shame, but it happens: I'd rather play GTA 3, which is simpler, less 'realistic', and easier to cheat on. Simplicity + Less Realism + Cheating = More Fun. In the case of GTA, that is a fact.

Though this game was hyped on a major scale it did not disappoint whats so ever. Still miles ahead of its competitors Rockstar have done it again. Easy to grasp, challenging missions and a deep lush environment to explore! If your a fan of the franchise then get this title now!!! If your new to GTA and sandbox games it make take you a little while to get!! But when you get it! you GET IT GOOD!!
Boethius from Southampton , 07/02/2009
I do not like this game because it is full of hate. Any individual who does not aspire to develop hatred within themselves probably would find little use for it or entertainment value in it. It's an limited expose of an imagined gang culture within a fictional city but fails to present anything human within the mix. I stopped playing shortly after the tutorial when to succeed I had to kill an Albanian loan shark to prevent him escaping because 'they are like locust' if one gets away loads will come. A hateful game.

A customer from Derby , 23/01/2009
san andreas was a pretty game i was much loved by me, but they have taken all the fun out of it and replaced them with repetitive unimaginative missions. and the graphics range of colours consists of various shades of grey.and for all the people reviewing above, NO you can NOT review a game before you have played it, this tricks mindless drones of the xbox live community into buying and overhyped piece of rubbish.BUY saints row 2 its a billion times better
A customer from Glenrothes , 23/01/2009
Like usual Grand Theft Auto Titles, this game gets too old too fast, you start off thinking, excellent graphics, lot of work went into designing this. Then you start to realise, that yes this is the fourth instalment of another GTA where you set out with the best of intentions to do everything right, to yet again become a mob don, but 5-minutes into it your crashing cars into grannies and driving off cliffs to see if you can swim in your car.If your an avid fan of GTA then I totally suggest it. Otherwise be prepared for monotony of repetitive, seemingly endless tasks but with the added bonuses of choosing between getting to that car in time to take the drugs before the cops show up (Sound familiar?) or take Michelle out on a date?

I found this game to be a lot of fun online, but the single player mode was a bit boring.
A customer from London , 30/12/2008
Honestly one of the best games I have ever played. I was actually a bit skeptical about its depth having never really played a GTA game before, but even if there was no storyline it would be worth it just to drive around the beautifully rendered version of New York (Liberty City) and interact with all there is to see and do.Now I've rented it I'm going to buy it and I'm looking forward to the downloadable extra levels.
A customer from Banbury , 18/12/2008
I find it hard to beleive that people can write a balanced review after only playing the game for 1 hour when the game lasts for 20-30 hours. I have not completed the game yet but from the several hours i have put in I have enjoyed the game, I have felt it is definetly a more mature (not content) step up in terms of gameplay and what you can do with that. Ok its not as deep as San Andreas, but aspects of that game felt like the developers were throwing a lot of stuff at you at once and hoping that some of it sticks, which it did in most cases. In this game they have pared back on that and focused on creating a game world that is more tangible. People complain about linearity, but this is needed as the developers are trying to tell a story. Do you complain about books or films being to linear? No.I have enjoyed this game immensely and will continue to enjoy it till completion. It isnt perfect, but is anything? And i think the 4 star rating is fair.
A customer from Birmingham , 15/12/2008

Best sandbox game ever. Its a real city, its hardly ever scripted, its funny as hell, the story is well paced, the music is amazing, there are so many stand out gaming moments.Helicopters, trucks, big guns, little guns, hookers!, killing, stunts, drug busts, blackmail, bowling, hi jacks, bank robbery, double crossing, pool, strippers, comics..........it has the lot.
A customer from Hyde , 02/12/2008
at least ive played the game before saying its best game ever when u havent even played it like some people but i enjoyed it very similar to others in grand theft series so well worth renting before you decide to purchase it
A customer from Peterborough , 03/11/2008
This GTA is by far the best in the series graphically it is not the best looking game i have seen but they are still good the story as you expect is very deep and unexpected betrayals and different ending sequences for replay value. If you are not into the series for the deep story and want it too be more of a crime sandbox game then that too is also added with a new line of weapons to use and murder a load of grannys but if you want the more fun side of gta then i suggest saints row two which is more zany and fun more than the serious approach. One good thing i noticed is that unlike san andreas you will not get gunned down by gangsters infact on the streets there are none. The online can be fun but at times i found i was waiting abit too long for as decent game of online play but when you do go on it is great you have a load of different game types to choose from. You can also go on a free play mode with up to 16 friends over xbox live which is insanely fun with a five star wanted level hiding in some of the flats gunning down police with friends but i dont think that the online play is the next halo or gears of war.My only critisism is that it is a bit grey and dark most of the colours you see are grey and brown but in defence of that the game is set in new york its not called new york but it is heavily implied and that is the supposed view of new york all grey and polluted and its no wonder why reviewers loved it.
A customer from Bristol , 23/10/2008
45mins after putting this into my 360, I'd decided to buy it. I played the previous GTA games on PC and PSP and thought they were 'OK', but this really lifts the bar, for video games as a whole. So many brilliant original elements, small touches and lots of great humor. The people that make this must be amongst the most intelligent and creative on earth!
Geinie57 from Preston , 13/10/2008
The game is ok, but the sceens are quite boring and some of the extras like dating and going drinking with friends are just plain boring. You only drive them there and drive them back zzzzz. I also thought the game was quite violent, whereas games like saints row were violent however not pure violent? if you know what i mean?
cyanide from , 07/10/2008
well tbh if you like GTA games i think you should like this, yes SA was a bit of a let down for me, went a bit derailed, GTA IV on the other hand is classic GTA for me, swearing, cop shooting, racing the works, The graphics and detail in this game are some of the best, but that's expected on the next gen consoles, also the cars handle alot differently then the other GTA games. But once you get used to it, it is rather fun handbraking it around corners and wheel spinning away from police or chasing gangsta's / mafia bosses.Online is deffo a plus in this game, yes it will get boring, but doesnt everything?cops and robbers, and turf wars are brilliantin all fairness if your a fan of GTA its deffo worth a rent to see if you think its worth buying. I did and I deffinatly dont regret it.Have fun

this game is pretty amazing, from a technical point of view - the maps are huge and the detail is astounding! i can not knock it for that, and would reccommend it to everyone!!!the only drawbacks are it feels to grown up. they have made is very realistic, but PERSONALLY i am not sure if thats a good thing. i prefered the slapstick element of the previous ones. but you can make up your own mind on that.great game - try it!

OK, so we had all the hype with the build up to GTA IV. The world was going mad, people were being mugged on the way out of shops of their copies. They were crazy times.I finally got my hands on a copy after stropping like a teenager. Put it on early in the morning and yes I played all day. It was great, the graphics were good (note...not astounding, amazing, groundbreaking etc etc). GTA IV still suffers with boxy sharp finishing on the characters themselves during cut scenes. The SFX, yes they were astounding etc etc.Great soundtrack including the magic Phil Collins amongst other legends. In game graphics and little detailing like when it starts to rain, people panic and start running for shelter or get their brollies out. Little detailing like this is cute, but soon wears thin. You can see that Rockstar have really tried with all these details.OK, now for the Jeremy Clarkson put down. All these details have made this game into what I feared....monotonous. The missions, albeit with different characters are just basically the same. Take these drugs here, take these weapons there, kill this person because they p*ssed me off, kill that person because he s*agged my missus. C'mon guys!!! All the hype that was built up over this, all the little sneak peeks, all the rumours of what this game was going to be, and it turns out to be a SMALLER version of San Andreas. The map, in comparison to San Andreas is no bigger than a Fifa 08 pitch. It ruins, genuinely ruins it. Get a chopper, and you're over the map in a matter of seconds. In a car, it is painstakingly hard because they wanted to fiddle around with the physics of the cars. They said they wanted to make it more realistic, they have achieved it! It's so real, it doesn't do what a video game is meant to do. Take you away from reality.I've given this 3/5 simply because of the hype that built this game up. It's like a night out that you have planned for months. It never turns out as good as the last inpromptu night out when you woke up next to a badger with a cone covering your delicate bits.Shame, this could have been one of those titles that you talk about for years. You know...a bit like COD4 *cough* sorry did I swear then?
Wilko21 from Brighton [Highly rated reviewer] , 31/08/2008
First off, many people say if you have been a die hard GTA fan from the start you won't like this installment of the series! I have to disagree there. Back in the day when i first got a playstation the game i got with it was, of course, Grand Theft Auto. I loved it from the moment i turned it on. GTA 3 put a whole new perspective on GTA gameplay for everyone and i will say i think rockstar have surpassed themshelves with every new title they release to the world of gamers. I truely believe with GTA IV they have taken the correct route and gone for a more serious, realistic world rather than the ridiculously mental. I absolutely loved playing through this game and some reviewers say it gets a bit repetative. Again i disagree, with the amount of side missions, races and random people to meet, if you stagger your gameplay to incorporate all of these with the main missions, your game will vary each time you play. One addition to the game i have been dreaming about for years is the multiplayer!! This in my eyes is one of the most fun games to play online with your mates even if its just messing around on free roam GTA style.I cant wait to see whats in the download content and will be playing this game right up until the next one hits our streets!6/5 from me!

nedwhitehead from Milton Keynes , 26/08/2008
I do understand other reviews that rave about this game, but I feel differently. When I was younger the sex and violence in previous GTA games was shocking and kinda exciting, however with this it just seemed unnecessary. It's lost the slightly comic outlook that San Andreas had, and in my opinion that still remains the better game.I gave it three stars as the graphics were outstanding and the gameplay was good. But i quickly got fed up with the repetitive missions, i.e go out pick someone up, or go and kill someone and get some drugs. It should either be o.t.t and a bit more funny or less violently intense. I really enjoyed San Andreas, but felt that IV was missing something.

this game is great you are based as nico bellic you come into liberty city as a immigrant looking for the good life with his cousin roman but it no diffrent from anyone you go across liberty city doing missions for different people i loved this game it was great5 star top game

IHPC1488 from Blackpool , 14/07/2008
Well, What can I say, Months of waiting and this game doesn't dissapoint me, for one it gives gives you a virtual New York City (NYC) to drive and shoot you way around in but also just to look at. The Graphics are top notch and there is nothing better than taking a helicopter to the highest it will go and jumping out, I would also like to say that if you are not a GTA fan then rent it. Because I am a hardcore fan I i spent 10 hours on this game non stop the first day of realease. you play as Niko Bellic, an Eastern European immigrant attempting to escape his past He goes in Liberty City to experience the American dream, only to discover his cousin, Roman, has folled Niko into beliving that he has the 'American Dream'. from nothing you realise that Niko is a Cold- Blooded killer and will do anything for cash because of this you soon come to realise that there is a broken human being inside, one who would give anything to escape the person he once was.Graphics-9/10- What can I say of a game of this size to have graphics like this it deserves credit, there is nothing more fun than goin on a killing spree in times square at sun rise.Sound- 10/10- One of the best sounding games I have ever played, Totaly emmersive wether you are driving or just walking down a lane you will here the sound of nature, cars people and occasional gunshots. All in beautifull 5.1 Dolby Digital.Gameplay-7/10- Great, that is all I can say very involving, realistic and most of all FUN! yet it still gets a little repetitive. So when i comes down to it if you are a GTA Fan buy it no question. Yet if you are not a GTA fan rent it and see what you think.

well i think the graphics are beyond belief. the whole city feels alive and attention to detail goes beyond even the metal gear franchise i think. the missions are well thought out and the main story missions will take you a good 30 hours or so to get through and even then you'll only be 60% done. when i completed this game i felt more achievement than i had at any other game. the controls work great and although i took a little getting used to the driving itdoesn't take long except with the two wheeled variety that i thought handled cr@p. once the game is finished there is still plenty to do. the online provides a great party mode where you can join you're friends in the city and either make up your own games or go into the real multiplayer. now this for me was a huge let down and to be honest won't be playing it again online. there is much better out there if online play is what you want, but as a single player game this for me rules the roost so much the multiplayer doesn't even matter.

Rented for my husband, - great graphics, fun to play. May think about purchasing in the future when its cheaper, so I can complete it.

Firstly @ to the morons giving the game 5-stars before even playing it: how can you review a game you haven't played yet?GTA 4 builds on the success of the previous games but takes it to the next level.Everything is bigger and better. The single-player campaign is compelling with more things to do than ever. The mobile phone idea is useful and makes staying in touch with contacts so much easier. The friends system is interesting but limited, but does open up certain avenues for the campaign. Multiplayer is immense. There are many, many modes to choose from which should keep you entertained for ages...The GTA series has never been renowned for its graphical achievements. This is the only area that I feel GTA is worse than your average HD/360 game. Hence the deduction of 1 star. The reduction in texture quality might have been necessary for the Xbox to cope with everything else going on though. Don't let that put you off though as it more than compensates due to the sheer magnitude and volume of quality material. This game is well worth buying, let alone renting, as it will keep you thoroughly entertained for weeks, months, or maybe even years (?) to come.

If you are familliar with the gta series then you can expect more of the same if you have never played any gta there is only one thing i can say! gta is the reason for gaming plain and simple. immagine walking down the streets of new york getting in a yellow cab grabbing a bite to eat then heading over to the nearest strip bar for a private show with your drug running rasta mate, then popping down to the coast line to look upon the statue of liberty only to get ambushed by a gang of undisirables bearing AK47s. if u have ever done that in real life and got a buzz out of it just wait till you get the game, it features great multiplayer options with up to 16 players free roaming the whole map and its massive, cars bikes boats choppers guns explosives shopps and missions gallore you will play for a good 60 hours and still have a ton of stuff to do and in october08 we are getting more content on xbox live. it is the one game you really cant do without

Hype, the ultimate killer of games and this is no exception. Let's face it if you've played GTA 1,2 or 3 then you know what you're getting with this game. It's almost as if they've run out of ideas and have been reduced to putting in silly little tidbits they hope will make you think it's a new game. If you like GTA then by all means get this game but if you wanted something new from the series then really don't get your hopes up.

Amazing game, single player is like the good old GTA style, and you are still able - like me to lose concentration and go off and beat up some old grannys.Online is great fun - hilarious with a bunch of friends.Stuhttp://consoles.real-incentives.net

nothing new what so ever.all the areas look identical.even the slums look like the rich areas.your character ((annoying accent like that one from gta san andreas)) controlls like a drunk hippo.and cant seem to turn properly without leaning like a damn motorbike.the gun designs are terrible too,and they sound so weak, its pathetic.not to mention shooting them iss just boring.even the boom of the RPG is lame.story.just like all the others,a boring tale of revenge and all that rubbish.the AI is terrible, and the online mode is just...gah.its not even worth mentioning that bit.a waste of time, money, and a rental space.just overhyped like halo 3,CoD4,Gears of War and many others that the fanboys cant seem to see the faults in.
