Rated - 0 starsBeowulf: The Game

David Smith from Sunderland , 28/11/2007

Even a merry band of adventurous thanes can't save this quest from ruin!

The Good?

Your thanes love you. There's plenty of slow-mo bloodletting.

The Bad?

It's easy to get stuck. The combat is brainless. Following the story is a quest in itself. You'll find dead ends in every aspect of the game.

Avoid.

Yet another awful scripted linear game! If you like random button pressing games then this is for you!!

If you like games where at least a little bit of skill is required then avoid this at all cost!!

Rated - 3 starsFrustrating Game

A customer from Benfleet , 06/11/2008

Graphics are overall quite good. Gamer points to obtain are not to hard. Game play is Naff. Poor old Beowulf himself would have been really cheesed off with this. When you go into carnage mode you fellow Thanes just get in the way and most of the time you end up killing them. Damm frustrating. I gave this a three overall because it still probable worth renting to get yet another 1000 gamer points. Keep racking them up guy and girls.

Disappointing, so much potential but the gameplay is repetitive and boring. Press red, press blue etc. Not enjoyable at all !

Rated - 3 starsEnjoyable Film tie in.

Tony Hiles from Stevenage [Highly rated reviewer] , 10/05/2008

Most adaptations of films are rushed to meet release dates and suffer as a result. Beowulf is one of those rare exampes when time has been taken and effort has been put into trying to capture the feel of the film.

This is not a great game but is certainly a good one. The graphics are OK. It is clear that this was developed with multiple formats in mind. Character models are good and the levels are dark and dank and mirror the movie. The music is good and some of the cast have reprised their roles and lent their voices to the game. This includes Ray Winstone who always struck me as an odd choice in the beginning. Still its good to have him cursing and shouting throughout the game. For a hack and slash style game it plays well. Control is generally good, a few weapons feature overly long animation routines and you end up getting clobbered while desperately trying to disengage from a scuffle. You can opt to use Carnal or Heroic moves which effect the achievements obtained. They stack though so play through on Legend first and then mop up with a second playthrough.

I enjoyed playing this. Its quite short but doesn't outstay its welcome as a result. If you like smashing things with swords give it a go. Easy one for achievements as well.

Please do yourself a favour and avoid this game, really its not worth it.

Why?

The gameplay is poor, the graphics are poor. I lasted all of 20 mins playing it and that was far to long. There is nothing to say about this game that i could recommend to anyone. So if its on your rental list, take it off!!

Movie tie-in games tend to be crap and this is no different. What really brings the game down is the constant stupid Quick Time Events (QTE) which is when you have to press the button at the right time and its so badly done that will lead you to smash something .The game designers are completely clueless to think this would be a good idea.

The combat is ok (been done better in the Conan game) and the graphics and animation are poor. Not even worth a rental

Rated - 2 starsPoor game

biker1559 from Weymouth [Highly rated reviewer] , 11/04/2008

Thought this might be oaky to try but it didn't get close to being any good, what with the silly game play and the cut scenes this ruined the game for me. The graphics were okay but the game need to have more time spent on it.

Normally movie games are really bad but beowulf is much better than expected.

The graphics are superb as well as sound effects.

Loads of different weapons and combos and 2 fighting modes heroic and carnage.

Recommend to all.
