About me: I love films, always have and my tastes vary from oblique slow-burning European offerings to brainless popcorn actioners (although I much prefer the former; the best films i've seen are STILL being processed between my ears).

A gem , 9 March 2008
  • Firefly - The Complete Series (4 discs) on DVD (2002)
Starring: Nathan Fillion,  Gina Torres,  Alan Tudyk
    Certificate: 12
I was drawn to this TV series having read a glowing review of Serenity. That piece also outlined the cult status the series had acquired since it was cancelled after 14 episodes. I was unfamiliar with Joss Whedon's previous output (Buffy never really caught my imagination, the little I saw of it) so came to this without preconceptions.

I saw Serenity, was suitably impressed and duly added the TV series to my Lovefilm queue. Every episode was a gem and when the final (and best) episode was finished I cursed Fox's short-sightedness (but then remembered that these were the same knuckleheads who pulled the plug on the brilliant Arrested Development).

Then I got to thinking: at least 14 episodes got made; think of the other magnificent series of which there are a similar number of episodes; Fawlty Towers, Spaced, The Office (UK), The Young Ones, Extras..and that's just those that immediately spring to mind.

There may be more movies made and there are Firefly comic books from Whedon to fill the gap between the Firefly series and Serenity the movie and another's out this month (March 2008) to continue the adventures aboard the good ship Serenity. Let's be grateful for what we got; the stories could still just exist as scribblings in a notebook at the back of a drawer in Joss Whedon's house.
