Arcania: Gothic 4
on Xbox 360
(2010)

For the first hour or so of this I wondered what had happened to one of my favourite RPG series, the graphics were nice; but the tutorial phase was completely linear. In fact, I felt that the new developers may have just butchered one of my favourite game series. Gothic games always were slow starters though, in Gothic 2 I remember the taxing first mission that involved picking turnips. Once I got out of the tutorial section the whole thing changed, I got non-linearity within discrete zones (lots of little themed sandboxes). If anyone remembers Might&Magic 6-9 then it is that kind of themed zone like level which I far prefer to the wide open sandbox style approach of oblivion. There are some real memorable sights and levels in the game, I remember seeing screenshots of the tree house & the bridge up towards the monastery but those don't prepare you for a graphical feast on your way up there. It's about this stage really where the whole game takes off and you think I am actually playing a Gothic game here and it really is quite good (talk about a slow starter). Plot wise is where it suffers the most, the new developers don't quite have the magic that the previous developers gave to Gothic and it's follow on Risen. Combat wise, I recommend starting on hard if you want a proper Gothic like experience, I did it on normal and it was a bit easier than I would expect of a Gothic game; that is just an excuse to replay on ultrahard though.
