I'm sure technically it was a wonderful film but did it grip? Did it thrill? Could I watch it to the end without feeling the urge to do the washing up? No.
Can anyone explain to me how some all powerful wizard can forge a vast army of demons, in the very pits of hell, that can be taken on and beaten by hobbits, whose seemingly only capability is to stare into the middle distance looking mildly constipated?
I'm sure the books were fine stuff too, though I've still got the bruise on my forehead where I fell asleep half-way through the first chapter, but you do get the feeling the whole Tolkein popularity is due to a lot of sheep.
