Broken Narrative , 7 February 2009
  • Babylon A.D. - Blu-ray (2008)
Starring: Michelle Khan,  Charlotte Rampling,  Mark Strong
    Director: Mathieu Kassovitz
    Certificate: Certificate: 15
There are a few places in the film where the director fails to communicate the narrative of the story to the viewer. For example the film starts in New York and then flashes to six days previously. There is nothing wrong with this, but I was a little confused as to why there where people talking Russian in New York, only later do they explicitly say they are in Russia and not as I thought a Russianised New York. Then there are a few missing transitions like when they are escaping from Russia to America and they go from the inside of a Nuclear Submarine to Snowmobiles with no transition at all. And there is a build-up to an American boarder crossing which is very risky for Van Diesel's character because he has been classed as a terrorist, but we don't see this.

These narrative mistakes where probably the result of budget issues, that hurt an otherwise ok film. The story itself doesn't have a proper ending which isn't a slur on the film, but to have an unsatisfying build-up to it, feels like a missed opportunity.
