Winter's Bone
on DVD
(2010)
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Lauren Sweetser
Director: Debra Granik
Certificate:
This is a slow-burner and one that might well require subtitles outside of the US, but Jennifer Lawrence is really exceptional in her role as Ree. Ree is the eldest of three siblings, with an absentee father and depressive mother. When she finds out her father has skipped bail and they stand to lose the family home if he doesn’t show up, she sets out to track him down. She deliberately breaks rigid family codes and crosses boundaries of acceptable behaviour on the way. Nothing if not feisty, she sticks with her pursuit because being homeless is a worse fate, even if her home’s little more than a log cabin in the woods. Many of the supporting cast are non-actors, local houses, farms and bars were used with very little alteration for filming. Viewing the bonus features, it was apparent what a big deal it was for them having this film made on location in Missouri where Hollywood doesn’t normally set foot. All of which shows that the American Dream is still really very remote for much of the US population.
