This seems to be a love it or hate it film according to most reviews I've seen. But I'm a bit of a middle-of-the-roader. It's ancient and next to the cinematic treats served up today it can look a bit bland, contrived and outdated. However, I was impressed by some of the dialogue - it's dry and witty throughout. I didn't particularly like any of the characters - the girls are annoying, but the main chap Rick gets most of the good lines so he's ok. I actually laughed out loud at some of the 'romantic' moments - some of the acting is hysterical as it's theatrical and overdone, as you would expect from something shot in the 40's. It's not an awful film, but it doesn't compare to cinema today. You have to watch it purely for an insight into the 40's and allow it the foibles of it's era.
