Certificate:
A beautiful film of condemned love that takes you from violent, rancid backstreets to serene open spaces and examines the core of human behaviour in a wonderfully naturalistic style. The passions are expressed through body language and this minimalist approach is echoed with an absorbing performance from Simone Signoret. The film is impeccably made and successfully recreates the ambience of Paris at the turn of the century. The underlying darkness of the story is contradicted by the rich, glowing light of the countryside which has led critics to compare scenes to an Impressionist painting. This is a film which looks at friendship, loyalty and the pitfalls of love in an absorbing and incomparable way.
