I wouldn't feel right about a child seeing this film. As an adult it's extremely difficult to watch and seems to be about a boy with serious issues who retreats into his imagination. Rather than finding a comforting, happy escape from his problems, his imaginary land is populated by the dark reflections of his fractured psyche. The voice acting of the 'wild things' jar terribly with their appearance, and virtually all the characters seem to be mentally ill in some way. I can't say that this is a bad film, it fact it's brilliant in terms of the atmosphere and visuals that Jonze has created, but I can't help feeling it's completely misguided - a strange choice to take a children's book and twist it into this dark business. It's so uncomfortable and disturbing a child could be psychologically damaged from watching this. I think I might be, hence the low rating. This is certainly a different kind of kid's film, and it can't be accused of eye-rolling inducing cuteness. I found it particularly challenging. I recommended paying quite literal attention to the Parental Guidance rating if you're going to let your child watch this movie.
