Atonement
on DVD (2007)
Starring: Keira Knightley, James McAvoy, Romola Garai
Director: Joe Wright
Certificate:
Ian McEwan's brilliant and i sightful novel is skillfully brought onto the screen with Kiera Knightley and James McAvoy bringing their characters brilliantly to life. It is a thoughtful, intelligent and sometimes profoundly sad drama, so don't expect everyone to like it: some people prefer undemanding RomComs or gorefests... Atonement treats the viewer as a sensitive and intelligent individual and draws him/her into the warp and woof of the story with considerable skill. The film excels in its ability to mimic the novel's complex but deep structure, not least because of the deceit perpetrated by young Brioni and the subsequent plotline thread. I found the music superbly chosen, and the editing was a joy. The original novel is probably one of the best British novels of recent years, and the ciematographic version does it justice.
